ceftin versus keflex regaurding penicillin allergy? In the past I've had a doctor prescribe ceftin (a second-generation cephalosporin) after I became "itchy" and it "gave me headaches" (no rash) following taking keflex (first-generation " "). Prior to that I didn't know I had a penicillin allergy, but the doctor suggested I might and hence forth I've said "I probably am mildly allergic to penicillin" whenever asked that question... a new doctor today prescribed me keflex 500mg capsules... for skin issue again... i've just taken one so far... i'm waiting to see if i'll get itchy, etc anyways... i read somewhere that rarely there are the allergy symptoms with keflex in those with hypersensitive penicillin allergy... if that were in fact my situation then why would i not (or peharps I should be?) experiece the same symptoms with ceftin? though they are both cephalosporin-types... are they different enough? if i get itchy i'm going to ask my doctor to prescribe ceftin. Thoughts on this? thanks

yikesalready replied: "I'm allergic to penicillin too (and sulfa, and codeine and lots of other things). But I can take the antibiotics keflex and levaquin."

Why do I get more congested while taking antibiotics? I have a sinus infection and am on Keflex. While taking it my nose becomes more congested and I can't blow my nose. Is this an allergy to Keflex? Of course its the weekend so I can't ask my doctor.

Rocky W replied: "Call your pharmacist and ask them. If you are having an allergic reaction they will know. It just sounds like your sinus infection may be breaking up and moving around. Wait til it gets in your system a bit more and you'll probably see better results."

Harleygal replied: "Hi. I am an RN. Unless you have any other symptoms you are not having an allergic reaction. When we prescribe you an antibiotic, it's job is to cure an infection. At the same time your body is trying to rid itself of the crap. It may come up when you cough or out your nose. If your nose is clogged go to the pharmacy and get some Mucinex....good stuff. It breaks all that up and it will start coming out! Hope you feel better soon!"

mlgable replied: "If you are becoming more congested with the keflex then it is not the right drug for sinuses. Keflex is generally not prescribed for a sinus infection so I am not sure why that was your doctors drug of choice. Since you are getting worse instead of better I would consider a trip the urgent care to get checked out."

Taking Keflex (penicillin) while on birth control? I had sex yesterday morning (unprotected as usual) and started taking an antibiotic(Keflex- I think it's a penicillin) this morning for what I think is the beginning of strep (allergies). It is also my off-week from Yasmin. How long do I have to wait for the birth control to be effective again? Do antibiotics even really affect birth control? I have to take the antibiotic 4 times a day for a few days. Keflex is a Cephalexin

daddyrx replied: "Keflex (cephalexin) is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It will decrease the effectiveness of your birth control. Use an alternate form of birth control while you are on the antibiotic and for 7-10 after you finish taking them."

Ghee replied: "Use condoms for the month - until after your next period -- Yes - antibiotics can negate effectiveness. Take your Yasmin - so your cycle will be the same. If you don't use condoms- you could name it Keflex -"

What is the vaccine called for whooping cough? I had a seizure to it when I was a baby and I can't take it. It's not called penicillin right? I got some antibiotics since I'm sick and they say not to take it if I have an allergy to peniciliin. The antibiotics I have is called keflex.

synisterkat replied: "Vaccines are not antibiotics. I think the whooping cough vaccine is called pertussis (spelling is wrong on that)"

I am 32 and have had a chest cold for about a month. I took a 7 day supply of keflex antibiotics. it has not seemed to help. on top of that i seem to be getting slight pains over my heart about 3 or4 times a day. i am in great shape. coach soccer and play soccer. please help. went to the doctor and he said it could be allergies or just a sinus infection with a little stress. is he right?

saint_omega replied: "I suggest seeing another doctor. Keeping a chest cold that long is not typical. About 5 (maybe 6; it's a blur) weeks ago I got a terrible cold and it turned into bronchitis. Then it turned into pneumonia. I also started having some chest pains. I've gone through 3 sets of different antibiotics, many breathing treatments, 2 inhalers, a week of rocephin shots and a steroid pack. I am only just now feeling back to normal. In fact, today is the first day I can say I think I'm completely over it. So don't take a chance and keep on waiting!"

Antiobiotic allergy question? Can someone allergic to penicillin safely take Keflex, a cephalosporin?

DrJames replied: "Nope, cephalosporins are in the same family and though newer generation ones have less allergenicity Keflex does. Dont risk it."

mosey replied: "Unfortunately, Keflex is on the yellow light, caution! Avoid if serious penicillin allergy. So the answer is NO, it is NOT considered safe, so don't use it if you are allergic to penicillin. I hope I helped. ;)"

last friday i had abad cough and sore throat i took keflex and cough drops for 3 days but now my left ear is? congested and i sound terrible my voice !and i ahve a tickly type cough and my throat is so sore from coughing i took robitussin,dimetapp,100 of cough drops, tea with honey, even spoonfuls of honey my throat feels al ittle better, but still bothers me today i took an allergy pill to see if that would help i might have to go to the doctor next, but has anyone ever had a terrible cough from allergies?i mean with a sore throat?!

everno14 replied: "i've had allergies for years anf the symptoms you are describing does not sound like allergies. more like a bad cold. allergies cause itchy water eyes, running nose, and sneezing. try taking tylenol cold and cough medicine. the tylenol should help your throat, the cold med should help decongest your ear and the cough med will help your cough."

can i take a medicine containing sodium lauryl sulfate if i'm possibly allergic to sulfa [sulfur]? about a few weeks ago i had an allergic reaction to the medicine i was on. however i do not know which medicine it was because i was on 2 [keflex and septra] my doctor said i may have an allergy to sulfa. so can i take the pill with sodium lauryl sulfate?

me replied: "There is a difference between sulfa and sulfate. Sulfa has the ability to attach to other things that make it possible to become allergic to it. You are not allergic to the sulfa itself but the way that it attaches to other things in your body. Sulfate does not do this which makes it possible to still take even if a person is allergic to sulfa. My sister is allergic to sulfa and she has to make sure that all of her medicines do not contain any. Plus, she can not eat foods containing sulfa (like tuna). The thing about allergies is that they can get worse each time you come into contact with that item. So, if you think you may have the allergy try very hard to avoid it."

What may I have with skin infected boils? I saw what looked like a spider bite or ingrown hair about 20 days ago on my forearm. i thought i may have seen a hair(small black dot) so I picked at it and it became very infected. I saw a nurse practioner, and she gave me Keflex for 7 days. The infection did not get better, so I went back to the the doc before a vacation. They suggested I am prediabetic (beacuse of lack of healing) and I am going for lab work tomorrow. Diabetes does run on my mother's side of the family. In meantime I travelled and got another "boil" looking raised thing on my right shoulder. A few dasy later my acne (pre period) was acting up on my face, and I noticed a very bad "zit" on my jawline, which now I am sure is the same as the other two I had. I have looked a MRSA pics online, and staph, and thought it was that. I am very concerned and want the doc to get to the bottom of this asap. What qs should I ask tomorrow? Is this mrsa, food allergies, other diseases? What tests & qs should I ask?

Amy replied: "I struggled with acne for years and I finally found the solution that works for me. We have been fooled, tricked, deceived, and just plain lied to. It's time that someone put a stop to it, and everyone learn the truth! Those of us who suffer from acne have usually been given 2 choices and neither of them work: 1. Over the counter remedies such as cleansers, creams, ointments, etc. These things have been proven over and over again not to work. Why? It does not address the root cause of the problem. 2. Go see a doctor and or dermatologist. They will generally prescribe prescription drugs which include topicals and or antibiotics. This, too, has been proven over and over again not to work. Why? It does not address the root cause of the problem. I found a step-by-step program that cured my acne and it has never come back. It is amazing and doesn’t use any drugs or doctors. The truth is that acne can be cured…if we know the secret the doctors and drug companies don’t want us to know. There is a great website: that has all the details. I really suggest you check it out and see if it works as well for you as it did for me."

My son started his first antibiotic today and now he's running a temp of 100.7! Should I be worried? He was running a low grade fever of 99.3 on Sunday. I gave him some infant tylenol and it had dropped back into the normal range (which for him is lower 98s) within an hour. He didn't seem to have any more problems through Sunday and most of Monday. That evening, he began sneezing and had a bit of a runny nose. I made an appointment at his pediatrician this morning and was sent home with the diagnosis of allergies and a possible infection (the 99.3 fever is the only evidence that an infection may be present). The doctor prescribed him Zyrtec for the allergies and Keflex for the infection. This is his first antibiotic. I start it as soon as we returned home. He has taken too doses and now he's running a fever of 100.7! I read the information sheets on the medication and it states that a fever is a rare but serious side effect. Should I be worried? I'm debating on taking him to the ER but I know that 102 and above is considered a fever for an infant his age (9 months). I just don't know if this would fit in the same catergory or not... Thanks in advance for your help! I have given him tylenol tonight. It hasn't dropped it very much at all (it's still over 100) and it's been an hour and a half since I gave it to him. His temperature was 100.7 when I first checked it at 1:30 AM. I gave him the tylenol and waited for it to kick in. His temperature was 100.1 at 3:00 AM. The tylenol just isn't dropping it much at all. I'm not going to sleep tonight. Too worried about him so I'll be keeping an eye on it. Diaper bag is already packed. The second it starts to rise again, I'm loading him up and we're leaving.

Indumukhi replied: "temps usually do go up a little at night if he were allergic ,,he would have a high pitched scream..you would know just reduce his fever with tylenol ( check for recalls of your tylenol 1st on their web site)"

Anna replied: "If the medical advice with the meds says a fever is a serious side effect, surly its obvious you need to get him checked out?! He may allergic to the meds or having a bad reaction to them...."

Laura replied: "call you pedi or call the hospital, also Tylenol will not always break a fever, a lot of pedi recommend doing a combo of Tylenol and ibuprofen, follow dosing insturecionts and alternate."
