About Amoxicillin Sinus Infections in Q&A
Sinus infections and Amoxicillin? I went to the doctor this afternoon for a sinus infection that I have so I could be put on meds to get rid of the infection. I am on amoxicillin 500mg for 10 days with yogurt. My question is this how long after starting the amoxicillin should I start improving to where it is almost gone? I am going out of town next month and I don't want to be sick then.

Mama P replied: "depends how bad your sinus infection is. I have severe sinusitis and they prescribed me amoxicillin. It didn't work...at all. Then they tried me on 2 more different anti-biotics...none of those worked either. Now, 4 months later, it is STILL going on. Worse than ever. ugh. Hopefully yours isnt severe. I would think it will start to help in about 3 days. Just make sure you take it when you're supposed to, and don't skip. Take the entire prescription until it is gone. If you cut off your doses short, or skip doses, it can mess up your kidneys"

i have a sinus infection, is amoxicillin okay to take for this infection? well i have been havin headaches n it started to get worst, so i went to da doctor, n i found out the reason for the headaches was because i had a sinus infection. the doctor prescribed amoxicillin along wit two other prescription.

Lee replied: "Yes, amoxicillin is good for a sinus infection. Make sure you take all of them so the infection does not come back."

shoaib i replied: "Yes but did u take doctor advise?"

Tequila replied: "yes it is.how many mg are u taking?"

Rick Oezhalp replied: "I suggest you have a look at the free content at this Web-page: for an overview of antibiotics. Also, (Please, excuse my bluntness) I do not think Yahoo Answers is a good place for taking consultation on medication."

Im taking amoxicillin for a sinus infection. Is it weird that its making me not tired? I try to fall asleep but end up staying awake until the about 3 am when i go to bed at 11 pm.My doctor perscribed it to me because I have a sinus infection. Is this unusual that is almost acting like caffine?

pharmacymom replied: "It's a very, very rare side effect of amoxicillin...but I suppose it has to happen to someone! Are you sure your stuffy nose/sinus infection isn't keeping you up instead?"

Ear and sinus infection. Is Amoxicillin effective for treatment? I'm getting different perspective on this drug. My doctor prescribed it to me for an ear infection and sinus infection. Anyone else taking or have taken this for those type of infection and how good are they for treatment? I got the 500 mg. Also are they good for tooth infections?

BOYD H replied: "They are good for all the above but not the best. My doctor tried these with little success and than gave me an antibiotic a lot stronger told me that especially with sinus infection there are so many different kinds of bacteria that Amoxicillin might not kill them all. He was right the last prescription worked/"

Rick9000 replied: "Hi, I was taking amoxicillin no long ago for an ear infection too, amoxicillin 500mg is antibiotic an it fights bacteria in your body, this antibiotic is used to treat many different infections on the body here you can find much more information about the uses of this drug."

kilak227 replied: "Yea all infections but ask a doctor for their opinion first."

Laura L replied: "The only things that really helped me was when my Dr. told me about a sinus wash that will kill bacteria. you need distilled water sea salt liquid chlorophyll and colloidal silver from the health food store. in a glass mix 1/4 cup water with a pinch of salt and heat to body temperature. add 5 drops each silver and chlorophyll and mix. using a large dropper (like one used for infant medication) drop 2 full droppersfull into one side of the nose while laying down. Turn the head and let it drain out the other nostril. Be sure to have paper towels handy. The silver kills the bacteria and there are several hundred kind that can live in the sinus cavities and anti biotics don't get rid of them all. Do this twice a day for a week, mixing up the mixture fresh each time. Then do it once a week for maintenance. There is nothing in this that will hurt you, and it cured me. I do not have to take claritin, or antibiotics anymore. best wishes"

Took Amoxicillin for sinus infection and within 1 to 2 hours had panic attack, palpitations, etc? I am allergic to sooo many meds, but last time I took Amoxicillin for 3 weeks for severe tooth problems, had no noticeable side effects. What gives? Is it safe to try it again. Oh, and it raised my blood pressure to 161/95, of course, that may have been the panic attack doing that....

Atheist replied: "Amoxicillian is a touchy drug, trust me. I am HIGHLY allergic to it. I took it for six weeks for an infection once, with absolutely no side effects. The very next time I took it, MASSIVE breakout of hives, I itched, I kept hyperventilating, my blood pressure shot up, so on and so forth. I am very allergic to it and I never take it anymore. If I were you, inform your doctor you are having allergic symptoms and suggest he mark it in your chart so other doctors will know. There are other drugs they can give you that work just as fine. The same thing goes with Azo. I took it for a UTI one year and I was fine. Just about four months ago, I took it again and I looked like a tiger -- Long stripes of raised, itchy, burning, red hot hives. Can't take that anymore, either!"

mighty_power7 replied: "usually panic attacks aren't symptoms of any bodily health problems...it's usually a mental health problem that is brought on by external stimuli - like, for instance, public speaking. symptoms of an allergic reaction include vomiting, itching, hives, difficulty breathing, and - worst case scenario - going into anaphylactic shock. the perception/fear of heart palpitations can accompany panic attacks, as can having a raised blood pressure. my guess is that you were so afraid that you would have an allergic reaction to the amoxicillin that you gave yourself a panic attack."

WhoKnows?1995 replied: "Panic attack is not a typical side effect of penicillin type antibiotics. I suspect that you worked yourself into a panic."

Sarah Louize United Kingdom replied: "I used to think that many drugs were giving me panic attacks but it turned out to be psychological.. as soon as i realized that, i stopped having attacks.."

efxdc x replied: "Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc. Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level. But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There's this strange herb called "St John's Wort" - it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John's Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc. The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced... you have that "learned behavior" in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior - Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction... There are several other techniques to help cope them! Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to.... Extracted from Source."

Why does amoxicillin not seem to be working for my child's sinus infection? Took my 3 year old to the pediatrician for what started out as a cold weeks ago that has ended up in what he says is a sinus infection. He has been on amoxicillin for 5 days now and I haven't seen much improvement, except his nose isn't constantly running. Still has a sore throat and congested head and is very very irritable. Any suggestions?

S P replied: "could be not what the doctor thinks it is. Could be a different bacteria."

Lola replied: "It is likely that the bacteria in the sinus cavity is not sensitive to Amoxicillin. There are classes of antibiotics that are responsive to different types of bacteria. Although Amoxillin didn't work, another penicillin derivative might, or you may need to try another antibiotic class entirely. The next step is to have your Pediatrician call in another antibiotic for your son. I'm hoping the Pediatrician did a culture; therefore, he can prescribe an antibiotic exactly specific to the infection that should knock it right out. I would call the on-call service of the office, and let the know the situation. Best of luck."

'Sunnyside Up' replied: "Any antibiotic needs time to work on the infection. That time limit is usually half of the time the perscription is perscribed for... 10 days would start seeing results in 5 days, etc. If after that period you do not see results, then it is possible that that particular antibiotic is not a good one to kill that infection. This happened to me with a larnyx infection. I was put on 3 different antibiotics for it and used them faithfully for the entire perscription time limit and still no results. I was then sent to a ENT specialist who cultured the infection by using a scope to find and take a culture. The culture it to see what will actually kill it and after I was put on that particular antibiotic, I was well after two complete perscriptions of it. It took a second perscript due to the fact that the infection was so bad by that time."

I am 25 weeks pregnant and on amoxicillin for a sinus infection? I started it yesterday morning and notice that everytime i take apill i get sick, feel a little weak and puke should i stop taking these and suffer or what? also it makes my tongue feel funny.

Just out there replied: "u need to call the doct who prescribed the medication to u and let him/ her know whats going on. ur not supposed to stop taking a medication unless the doct says otherwise."

mrklcoac2002 replied: "you should call your o.b. or your pharmacist"

Isa replied: "Are you eating before you take it? Also, it wouldn't hurt to take an acidophilus pill with your antibiotic. Call you'r doctor, you can't just suffer through an infection. They don't go away on their own."

kerry d replied: "You should get in contact with your doctor, it may be that he needs to change your medication as they are obviously giving you some kind of reaction to them. Hope you feel better soon."

Antje replied: "It's important to treat the infection but call your doctor and let him know what you r experienceing. I had an infection too during pregnancy but never had any side effects"

Nick Taylor replied: "It is now rather common that antibiotics fail to cure sinus infections, particularly if the infection is of fungal origin. Then, taking antibiotics may only make the condition worse. Nasal irrigation and aromatherapy would possibly work better. I can recommend an ebook on natural allergy/sinus treatment. It is a home remedy consisting of 7-8 steps. My whole family (all being sinus sufferers formerly) swears by this treatment. Have a look at this site to see if it fits your condition. Taking 1g of Vitamin C in ester form can make you feel much better. And, only a medical doctor can tell you whether to stop antibiotic medication or not. I would suggest not to rely on Yahoo answers to make this decision. Best wishes."

I was prescribed amoxicillin for a sinus infection. 5 days into taking it my tongue feels like i have been? eating sour patch kids or something, a bit sore and raw. I've also developed something of a dry, pained throat, not ewxactly like a sore throat. Sound familiar to anyone?

sammy54321 replied: "are you allergic to it? I would talk to your Dr."

wylde95 replied: "it could be thrush/ a yeast infection Many women get yeast infections in their vagina after taking a course of antibiotics, it upsets the natural balance of bacteria in the body, so it's not surprising that it could also cause a yeast infection in the mouth/throat. And this kind of infection is also common in the mouth for other reasons as well. So it's not unheard of. Go see your doctor, they will be able to prescribe something to help you."
