Azithromycin and birth control- should i take plan b? I have been on birth control for a while, taking it always on time and without any problems. I had unprotected sex early today, and then went to the doctor and was put on antibiotics for a cold (Azithromycin). Now I am nervous that the antibiotic is in my system and the birth control hormones won't be as effective. pregnancy ins't an option. should i take plan b?

Dizzy Devil replied: "Yes I would just to be on the safe side. That is how I had one of my kids."

aceofspd replied: "NO, the idea that antibiotics will inactivate birth control is just a legal myth. Many years ago, someone won a lawsuit claiming that this happened. Now we have to scare every woman who has ever run into this combination. You would have to have been on the antibiotics for days or weeks to even remotely cause a problem."

Can Azithromycin affect birth control efficiency? I've heard that antibiotics can interfere with birth control but I wasn't sure if it was just on the days that the antibiotic was taken or if it can interact for a longer period of time.

Joseph replied: "Most antibiotics do interfere with birth control pills. Its during the time you take it for sure and maybe another day or so. I suggest you Goggle the name of your b/c + side effects and read for yourself its usually at the bottom of the page where the name of the antibiotics is mentioned and the precautions."

how does the antibiotic azithromycin affect birth control? ive been on azithmycin for 5 days while taking birth Control i used the pull out method but how much does this antibiotic decrease the efffectiveness of birth control yaz?

c k replied: "Azithromcyin is not documented to decrease birth control pills. Penicillins and tetracyclines are the antibiotics that can decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills."

J B replied: "Most antibiotics cancel the effectiveness of your birth control and it tells you this in the medication handout given with the med. The pull out method is a sure fire way to get pregnant. There is sperm present event at the beginning of intercourse. While taking antibiotics and for a few days after you finish taking them, it is recommended that you use extra protection (condoms) to prevent pregnancy. Follow the advice for this medication on the handout."

does taking azithromycin affect the way birth control is supposed to work? a lady answered ma question..but i wanna noe more....does it matter if im on nuva ring?

EROS7776 replied: "Nuva Ring is a hormone based form of birth control just like taking the pills, and this drug will interfere with its effectiveness. If you are taking this drug you need to use other form of dependable birth control for its duration and another 7 days after it is completed. hope this helps.."

The effect of Azithromycin (generic Zithromax) on the birth control pill? I'm taking the antibiotic Azithromycin (generic Zithromax), how long so I have to use a birth control back up along with birth control pills after finishing up the five day pack of Azithromycin?

Kate from Drugs.com replied: "I don't know which birth control pill you are on ....but generally if you are taking a combined oral contraceptive, additional methods of birth control should be considered during and for at least one week beyond the last dose of short-term antimicrobial therapy. You can do an interactions check by visiting the link below. Just put the name of the birth control pill you are on and azithromycin. "

azithromycin effect birth control?? I'm on z-pack right now, aka azithromycin or zithromax. It doesn't say on the package that it effects birth control, but I was wondering if it does or not. Does anyone know?? Thanks!!

College Girl replied: "go to your birth control maker's website and look for interactions or go to walgreens online pharmacy to check but where the package does not warn you, it should be okay"

LP2000 replied: "Yup. Pretty much any antibiotic can affect how well an oral contraceptive works. Below is one place to look at the labelling for Zithromax (look under the Interactions tab). Here's what it says: "This medication may decrease the effectiveness of combination-type birth control pills. This can result in pregnancy. You may need to use an additional form of reliable birth control while using this medication. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details.""

Zithromax (Azithromycin) & Trinessa birth control? does this antibiotic effect this birth control?

sokokl replied: "Not that I am aware of, but I would recommend checking with your doctor and pharmacist as well to see what they say."

I'm prescribed Azithromycin, an an antibiotic. Will this make my birth control pills ineffective? I only have to take this antibiotic for 5 days... how long before I can have sex without a second form of contraceptives? (When will my birth control pills become effective again?)

Adam M replied: "This drug may interfere with the effectiveness of birth control pills; other forms of contraception may be required during the treatment period."

Debbie V replied: "Probably. Don't take a chance. Use another two forms of contraception. TX Mom"

Don replied: "before my wife had our fourth child she had gotten sick and had to go on antibiotic and she was on the pill to cut along story short she fell pregnant we asked the doctor how that was possible when she was on the pill, he told us that antibiotics cut the pill out, so going on that I would say yes antibiotic make the pill inefective, I would just like to add even though our forth son came along we still welcomed him with open arms and loving hearts."

Chuck replied: "Sublime_yo! This is actually an easy question to answer once you understand the physiology of the gut and how birth control pills are utilized by the body. Most antibiotics - including the macrolides like azithromycin - alter the enterohepatic cycle of birth control pills. Your body absorbs the birth control pill in the gut (enterocytes do the work), it circulates in the blood and concentrates in cells - and in the bile. It gets released by the gall bladder and bile duct back into the gut, and gets reabsorbed. That is the enterohepatic cycle. When you take antibiotics, you alter the gut by killing off the susceptible bacteria that help your body by transforming bile salts. The transformed bile salts are reabsorbed by the ileum and return to the liver, some with the birth control molecules closely associated. So on antibiotics you lose the recirculation effect and your birth control level falls, and eggs will finish development - making your birth control ineffective! Now, how long after being on Azithro before your BCP will be effective again? Azithro hangs out in cells for several days after your last dose, and BCP's are 99% effective if you have been taking them at the recommended dosage (ie, with intact interohepatic recirculation occuring) for one complete cycle. So after you are off the azithromycin, you can bet you will ovulate. Once your BCP levels return to normal, (3-5 days without antibiotics), wait until after your menses. If your menses occur while on the antibiotic, then wait for the following menses. Keep taking the pill but use barrier birth control until you have cycled once. Best of luck!"

Why did the pharmacist ask me if I was on birth control? I'm 14 and yesterday my mom and I went to the drug store to pick up my prescription of Azithromycin for my bronchitis. Why did the pharmacist ask me if I was on birth control? Any thoughts? (PS) I'm a virgin so of course I'm not on it. lol, the pharmacist was a girl. And actually, I'm lez so I have no need to be on the pill.

Anna replied: "He basically asked if you were open for sex. Just wink and keep walking. It's pretty flattering."

Savannah W replied: "There could maybe be a birth control that doesnt do well with your medication or something. He was probably just making sure that it was completely safe for you to be taking the medication"

Avinitinatt replied: "Because antibiotics reduce the effectiveness of contraceptives, so if you were he would advised you to use condoms, simples :) x"

rexxi replied: "if you are on birth control, certain medications affect it, making it not work properly, and increasing the chance of pregnancy. that is why she asked. and you dont need to be sexually active to be on the pill, many women and girls use it to regulate your period. being a virgin has nothing to do with it."

Don replied: "The drug you bought reacts with the BC medication. Nothing was intended other than that."

laplandfan replied: "Antibiotics can and do interfere with the reliability of the birth control pill. I have a 19 year old son (that was unplanned as a result of being on the pill and antibiotics!)"

Antibiotics and Birth Control - Could I be pregnant? I was on the antibiotic zithromax (azithromycin) and am wondering if it might've had an affect on my birth control pill. I had sex while I was taking the antibiotics and while I was on the first week of my pack. I've been on the pill for over 6 years but I'm still a little worried. I know it's probably too soon to take a pregnancy test - I still have another near 2 weeks until my period. Does anyone know anything about this drug interaction? Or when I should take a test?

Apple Juice replied: "antibiotics always cancel out the effects of birthcontrol, your doctor should have told you this."

***~*** replied: "All antibiotics reduce the effects of the pill. Yes, it is possible to be pregnant. You can take a test once you miss your period."

Katrina replied: "I recently had a minor surgery done and was put on antibiotics, the FIRST thing the doc told me was to use another form of birth control because antibiotics make the pill a lot less effective. There are a few tests that you can take a couple days before your missed period, but I'd prob wait until I was actually late. Good luck :-)"

Men are g☆☆d t☆☆...... replied: "My suggestion is see your family doctor. I'm doubting that a Gynaecologist is going to start consulting on Yahoo Answers."
