Has anyone had experience with Zyrtec and/or Nasonex for a child under 2? The pediatrician recommended it but when I asked the pharmacist he stated all the literature shows it for children 2 and up...Anyone ever used it for their child? I am not going to get the Rx filled until I have all the facts...anyone know side effects etc?

jill147 replied: "My son will be one next week. He just got prescribed Nasonex for his severe allergies. So far so good. I was worried at first too, but the doctor assured me that it was safe if I followed his directions properly. He even took nasonex at 7 months and no side effects. Hope this helps."

Allergy medicine for my 2 year old, I AM WORRIED! Prescribed Zyrtec, nervous about side effects, HELP!? My 2 year old has many food allergies, and has recently developed and allergy to cats. Her allergist prescribed Zyrtec 1/4 teaspoon PRN. (as needed). My friends son had a very bad reaction to Zyrtec, as well as many other children in my playgroup. They started banging their heads on walls, biting children at school, and many other horrible side effects that stopped when they stopped taking Zyrtec. Has anybody heard of this? I was thinking of using Claritin for children, does anybody have any experience with this? I just want to do what is best for my child, like any other Mommy. I am an RN, we have been avoiding foods for 1 year and don't have a cat. She has a allergist, and she has been skin tested for these allergies. I avoid the allergens, and give medicine for reactions. My concern is with the long term use of Zyrtec. I want to help her allergies, but not harm her from use of medication.

JesusIsTheAnswer replied: "Vegetables, fruits, and herbs are medicines. Include these in their diet and many allergies will go away. Get some nutritional reference books for ideas."

familyguyvw replied: "I also have allergies and have taken zyrtec, i doubt what the kids are doing are part of reactions from the prescription. However, just to make sure, I would contact your or your child's doctor as soon as possible and ask him."

courtfair replied: "ABOSULTEY NOT, DO NOT USE ZYRTEC, especially for a 2 year old. Claritin is good, it clear my son and me right up. I understand your concern, but when you have doubts about something, always go with your gut feeling, and your gut feeling is saying no do not use Zyrtec. Alot of times, doctors do more harm than good. Friends and neighbors sometimes know what is better for your child because they been through some of the experiences."

davereason2002 replied: "Sounds like 2 things here. 1) Check to see if the other children who had the bad reaction were taking the right does. High doses can lead to irritability ... which may lead to "biting other kids" 2) were the other children getting zyrtec-D ... which has pseudoephedrine in it .... which in can lead to hyperactivity I have not seen any serious reactions to zyrtec when it is given at proper doses. Ultimately you should just ask the child's pediatrician if you are concerned, and if you'd feel better, get a second opinion, or ask a pharmacist."

kathy s replied: "I take Zyrtec as an adult. I've never heard of giving it to a toddler. Be careful. Watch. If he starts biting and carrying on, quit giving it to him. Normally, for food allergies, you just don't eat food that makes you sick. If you are allergic to cats, don't get a cat. I take Zyrtec for mold and pollen."

Worshipful Heart replied: "Your 2 yo is not having allergy problems because he is Zyrtec or Claritin deficient. These things all have side effects, either effects you will see now or effects that will show up later in life. My friend has children who have many food and external allergies- she keeps their systems built up through various natural remedies and OCCASIONALY will give a dose of Benadryl if they are overexposed and have a reaction. Asfar as food allergies go, I would have her tested specifically for intolerances- this cannot be found out through a regular allergy test and often can be a root cause of other allergy problems because ofthe damage it does ."

midnightmoon62 replied: "The dosage is safe for children. The only side effect I have from it is sometimes jitteriness. Simply watch your child closely for any reaction for the first 2 weeks. At the first sign of a neg reaction, contact your doc."
