How to stop bleeding on a Small cut while on coumadin/warfarin.? Hello , My husband is currently on Coumadin/warfarin and this morning he got a little cut on his finger which removed a small piece of skin. It has been bleeding off and on all day. We have been changing bandaids about every 5- 8 min or so. While burping the baby it started up again. Any suggestions on how to stop bleeding on such a small cut. It is to small to go to the ER or Dr about. Thanks for all your help.

Ghee replied: "Keep more pressure on the cut - use a gauze pad and tape on it - not just a band-aid. And then once it stops bleeding - let it alone for a while so it will clot off - If he has a "stiptic " pencil (for stopping bleeding while shaving) - you could try that as well -"

STEVE replied: "When's the last time he had his Prothrombin time checked? If it's been longer than 3 weeks it's time for a recheck to determine if his Coumadin level is correct. Try applying direct pressure for 10 minutes and if that doesn't stop it go to First/Urgent Care or similar or ER as last resort."

SZO replied: "Try applying pressure on the wound with a damp gauze for around 30 minutes or you can use a tea bag since it has tannic acid which can help stop bleeding. Steep the tea bag in water then squeeze to remove excess water, then apply on the wound with light pressure for 30 mins."

bleeding while taking coumadin!? my husband is on coumadin, went to E.R. has blood in urine dark blood, they don't seem to worried, he has to see urologist tuesday..i'm scared to death. could he be bleeding internally and should he be admitted.his back is hurting they did say he has cells in the urine.i need any information.

alawton5 replied: "Get another opinion. Are his gums bleeding when he brushes his teeth? Coumadin is very hard to monitor. I would definitely call his primary physician and have his levels checked asap."

Lady X replied: "Blood in urine and the pain associated in his back, could be a urinary track infection, kidney stone, prostrate etc. Keep him comfortable with pain meds, drink plenty of water or cranberry juice to flush the kidneys and keep your MD appointment. The urologist is the place to start. If the blood is uncontrollable go back to ER."

INR and Coumadin.. besides the obvious of bleeding, can thin blood cause other problems? Had FFP on 3/31st 10mg of Vitamin K for past 4 days and INR is still greater than 14.. 2 days ago they did a catscan to ensure no brain bleed because he had a severe headache, and the scan was clear. He is still greater than 14, and have been for 4 days?? We only know its greater than 14 because thats the highest reading the lab can detect. But now we dont know what to do, they just sent him home and want him to take Vitamin K again? He has been on coumadin for more than a year, gets checked about once a month. until this month, and he normally takes 10mg a day 5 days a week and 2 days at 7.5mg. THe coumadin clinic as well as his family doc say they are stumped.. we left the ER again tonight after dr ordered him to go, and ER gave him anotehr 10mg of vitamin k and sent him home. Per the ER dr, he and his colleague were going back and forth with "hospitalist" about admitting him. hospitalist says he is only 38 and not bleeding out so they will not admit. I am thoroughly confused.. nothing has changed in his diet or his meds.. otehr than stopping 2 of them that have potential of making his blood thinner (simvastatin)and(fenofibrate).. no answers from Dr, coumadin clinic, or ER so far.. his liver enzymes are normal .. so .. should i be worried?

Susan Yarrawonga replied: "If you have thin blood you are unlikely to get a blood clot but you could end up with a brain haemorrhage which is much worse. A stroke due to a blood clot is something like 10 times more common than a stroke due to a brain haemorrhage but nevertheless brain haemorrhages should never be dismissed as unlikely to happen. Vitamin K found in broccoli and spinach or a vitamin K supplement can always be taken for blood clotting if your blood is too thin. Citrus bioflavonoids (antioxidants) found in citrus fruit such as oranges and mandarins or a citrus bioflavonoid supplement taken every day will strengthen your blood vessels and that should reduce the chances of getting a brain haemorrhage. You can find further information in a web search for "citrus bioflavonoids" + "capillary walls"."

how many different milligrams of coumadin are they? My mom is taking coumadin and is bruising horribly and bleeding fom her bowels & kidneys. The doctors are having ah hard time getting the right dosage for her. She has an irregular heartbeat. She is now taking 5 miligrams every other day. Does coumadin come in lower dosages than 5mg. Is this a side effect of coumadin?

Chicken in Black replied: "Warfarin (coumadin) also comes in 1mg & 3mg as well as higher doses. Bruising and bleeding are both possible side effects, and are common. Infections, diet, stress and other medications all impact the way that coumadin effects the body and getting the dosages right can be very long time. That is why testing is normally done so often to make sure it isn't too high or low. Good luck and I hope your mom will be ok."

scooby doo replied: "There are many different milligrams. 0.5mg, 1mg, 2mg, 2.5mg, 3mg, 4mg, 5mg, 6mg, 7.5mg, 10mg also sometimes doctors write for like 12mg or maybe 14mg or a combination of the strengths above. hope this helps."

gir replied: "I take coumadin and there are dosages from 1 up to 10, even in betweens (2.5 3.5 4.5). She needs to be seen at ER if she is bruising and bleeding. They should put her on heprin which is like coumadin, however it is givin thru an IV, not a pill. Your INR range is not something to play with. If her INR is too high, they will lower her dose. If its too low, they will give her Lovonex injections in her stomache. Please have her call her doctor or go to the ER."

Do you know of a way to thin blood other than aspirin or coumadin? My 82 year old mother has a-fib and is on coumadin to prevent stroke. She had knee replacements and bleeds frequently on her knee when her blood is too thin. So we walk a line between stroke and bleeding on her knee, which is so painful she can't walk. I'm thinking there must be a method of thinning her blood that is milder than coumadin, and so less likely to thin too much and cause the knee bleeding. The doctor says the risk of stroke when using aspirin for thinning at that age is much greater. Does anyone have any experience with using Vitamin E to thin blood? Or any other foods/methods to do so? Perhaps I can lower the coumadin and increase Vit E.

El Viejo Pantera replied: "a glass of red wine a day."

nd721 replied: "I wouldn't do anything unless her doc recommends it. You are walking a thin line and the drugs she is on are not ones to mess around with. Her doc could advise her to lower the dose of coumadin, but if he has her on a specific dose, it's for a good reason. Not having a stroke is more important then the ability to walk unfortunately."

juneaulady replied: "Please, please do not manipulate her meds yourself. Lots of people are on coumadin long term. You must have her protime checked regulary. There are many things that can affect the protime level. Certain foods rich in Vitamin K can really affect the protime : Asparagus Avocadoes Beef liver Broccoli Cabbage Green onions Soybeans Lettuce Spinach Olive oil Canola oil Watch her diet and try to keep it the same. Some people are extremely sensitive to foods affecting their protime level. Sometimes even adding vitamins can affect it. I urge you to let the drs. handle this. Vitamin E does not affect coagulation. She is extremely sensitive to clots in her condition and needs this protection. I know it is tough. I have had many patients in the same boat. There really is no natural way to affect coagulation. Your efforts may do more harm than good. Talk to her cardiologist and orthopedist."

Barberry replied: "Perhaps her clotting time is a bit too long, which is why she tends to bleed more easily on the coumadin. If her dose is lowered slightly, that may be changed. However, you can't do that on your own; she'll need lab tests to check the levels. When she was placed on coumadin, you should have been given a list of foods that can cause the lab tests to be "off". If she is eating a lot of those foods, on an irregular basis, it can cause her lab tests to be 'off' so that the doctor increases her coumadin. Hopefully you know what I am referring to, and are watching her diet carefully. You cannot use Vitamin E to thin the blood. You have no way of controlling how much is absorbed or how much you should give. Leave the medication levels up to the doctor. I am wondering why she is having frequent knee bleeds. Is she bumping her knees? If she has symptoms of a knee bleed, put some cold compresses or ice packs on the knees, 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off, 10 minutes on, every 2 hours for a few cycles. That may help prevent as much bleeding. If it continues, talk with her doctor again."

Amy P replied: "You need to work with her physician. Do NOT manipulate her medications. Vitamin E has never been shown to prevent stroke in medically sound research studies. Nor has a glass of red wine daily. Think of it this way: which would be worse? Blood on the knee or a disabling stroke? Which is reversible? Obviously, the stroke is worse, and it would be irreversible and could kill your mother. Do NOT take it upon yourself to adjust her medications."

Can you get a tattoo if you are on the perscription Coumadin? My dad is on the persciption Coumadin which is a blood thinner in case of blood clots. He wants to get a tattoo but is afraid that it would be hard for him to stop bleeding. Is getting a tattoo dangerous? Would it be crazy to ask his doctor if he is able to come off of that pill until after the tattoo? Any suggestions or know anyone that was/is on this pill and got a tattoo?

pretty + poisonous replied: "Call his pharmacist and ask them. That's what they are there for. Why would he go off the pill and RISK HIS LIFE to get a tattoo? That sounds pretty dumb to me."

EMY. replied: "The best thing to do would be to talk to the doctor who gives him this medicine, and see what he has to say <3"

sand3419 replied: "Your Dad needs to talk to his doctor about discontinuing the blood thinner for a short period of time, so that it is not in his system when getting the tattoo. I'm sure that the doctor has encountered this before, and may have a solution. Then your Dad should also tell the tattoo artist, so that everyone knows and is cool with it. Then your Dad needs to get a good nights sleep, eat an hour before hand, and relax and hold still so that the artist can do the best job possible. Then your Dad need to do excellent aftercare, this video is great, (I prefer Lubriderm unscented to Curel though): and after getting the tattoo, your Dad can go right back on the Coumadin. It is only during the tattooing that you do not want a blood thinner of any kind (not even aspirin). I hope he picks out a great image and tattooist! When it heals - sunblock for life. Don't forget to tip! luck~"

My dads INR was 15 what test need to be done to look for bleeding? My dad was prescribed too much coumadin following a pulminary Embolism his INR was 15 now with Vitamin K int's a 4. What tests should he have done to look for bleeding? Hw shows nothing at this time.

ckm1956 replied: "If's blood counts are stable, and he's not obviously bleeding, then none. A high INR makes it more likely to bleed. It doesn't mean that a person will do so."
