Can anyone tell me SPECIFICALLY why you should not drink alcohol while taking Zoloft? 1rst, yes I know you are not supposed to mix these two through reading the literature. However, I have found very little out there that actually states why. If it is because you don't want to mix an antidepressant with a depressant, exactly what happens when you mix the two. Does it simply make the anti loose it's affect? Or, is the combo actually potentially life-threatening? I'm looking for answers that can actually explain what happens when they mix and identify the "real" (not I heard this or that) potential for bodily/mental harm. I know lots of people want to help on this type of question since most of us have experienced or seen first-hand the effects of mixing drugs or drugs with alcohol, but please only answer if you can offer some real info to the discussion. 90% of answers to questions similar to this one just say, "medication + alcohol = BAD". I understand that and wouldn't even be asking this question if I did'nt. I appreciate any assistance you may offer.

Miss Emily replied: "Mainly because it will increase the sedative effect of the medicine. I would go out on a limb and say a couple of units are unlikely to cause you any real danger, assuming all other factors of health are well."

wanninonni replied: "You answered your own question. Mixing an antidepressant with a depressant, my understanding is that some of the effects (or side effects) can be enhanced. There have been reported cases where people mix the two and have adverse effects. Is drinking really that important to you? If so, maybe you should seek help for that as well."

vamedicca replied: "The reason for this warning is because when a person who is taking Zoloft (or other such antidepressant) and then consumes alcohol, the chemical effect is that the Zoloft potentiates, or intensifies, the depressant effect of the the alcohol. That is the reason. The caution is that a person who has consumed, say, 3 beers, will be much more drowzy and less coordinated, etc., than expected due to the amount of alcohol consumed. The effect will be different from person to person and is difficult to predict, hence the warning that it is best to simply not consume alcohol while taking the medication."

Susan S replied: "Alcohol may increase the feeling of drowsiness you might experience from the Zoloft. Don't mix them."

doctordad replied: "Hello: As you well know, Zoloft (sertraline) is in a class of anti-depressants called serotonin specific reuptake inhibitors (SSRI's). I treat a lot of patients with depression, anxiety, and OCD. This question has been asked many times. The problem is that there are no long term studies that have studied the effects of ethanol with any of the ssri's. To cover their asses, the pharmaceutical companies have to put that notation in the literature. Theoretically, the reason that you should not mix ethanol with zoloft is that both drugs change the levels of neurotransmitters and neurohormones in your system. I usually tell my patients an occasional glass of wine or a beer is not going to hurt them while taking zoloft, however, many people overindulge which can really screw up the balance of neurotransmitters in your central nervous system thus potentiating some of the side effects of zoloft, ie sedation, tremors, headaches, etc. The research/medical community still is not sure, thus they have to state that mixing is "not recommended". They do not say that you absolutely cannot and must not drink alcohol while taking zoloft. That is about the best answer I can give you at this time. Your statement about mixing them may cause a reduction in the efficacy of the antidepressant is a good one, and may even play a role. We just dont know at this time. As far a the mixture being life threatening, you would have to take a large amount of zoloft which can cause something called "serotonin syndrome" which can be lethal. Adding alcohol on top of a large dose of zoloft can be lethal. I hope this helped to answer your question and I apologize that I dont have a more definitive answer for you at this time. There just isnt enough data out there to say for sure. Regards, Warren Shaffer, M.D."

have you drunk alcohol while taking zoloft? Looking for the personal experiences of anyone who has been taking zoloft for some time and who also occasionally drinks. I've been taking zoloft for a month now and am wondering about side effects in the situation described above.

shawtnsweet77 replied: "i wouldnt mix the too. Zoloft is a mood altering drug as well as alcohol. You should never mix drugs and alcohol without talking to your doctor first"

Anne B replied: "It's ok to have an occasional drink. I take Paxil, and have never had a problem."

Gypsy Girl replied: "It's not a good idea. Alcohol usually doesn't mix well with psych drugs."

gmc05gal replied: "Both are metabolized in the liver. so it is not advised. As with any drug, the two Should not be taken together. I hope this helps you,"

gummiebear replied: "an occasional drink is ok but be aware that alcohol speeds up the metabolism of the zoloft. in other words, you would not receive the full dose of the medication because it's eliminated from your body much faster."

tigerguy0017 replied: "If you are talking about having a beer with friends now and then when out bowling etc you should be OK . The warnings of not mixing it with alcohol are aimed more at not going out and getting drunk frequently . As with anything moderation is the key ."

Candi Apples replied: "It's alright to have a few drinks, and even to get drunk. But I wouldn't make a habit out of it.You are the only one that knows what's best for you."

Chloe M replied: "yes. i drink regularly and have been using zoloft for years. i find the difference for me is this. on zoloft and drinking, i get very drunk quite quickly and extremely tired. when i wasn't on zoloft, i could stay out easily til 3 or 4 in the morning. now, if i'm drinking, i feel lucky to make it past 1am. (although it could be that i'm getting old!) something else happens too. i have very vivid dreams on zoloft. if i fall asleep drunk, i will continue my 'night out' in my dreams. the next morning, i'm not sure what was real and what i dreamt. i find that a bit scary. otherwise, i haven't had any other issues. i would suggest to you, probably don't go out and get drunk, but just have a few drinks to test the water and see how your body tolerates it."

Can you drink alcohol while your on Zoloft? Im in college and i was just prescribed the lowest dose of zoloft (25mg) and well i am in college so i do drink on the weekends sometimes. If i drink while I take the Zoloft will it make me really sick? Is it like taking antibiotics where just a couple drinks can make you very sick (throwing up and stuff)? I just hate throwing up and feeling sick, i dont want the zoloft to interfere with drinking. Im aware that the alcohol will "cancel" out the zoloft, but im just wondering if it makes you feel sick?

NaNa♥♥yO replied: "OMG OMG OMG OMG NO NO NO NO NO NO U COULD OVER DOSE OR EVEN DIEEEE DUDE AND NOT TO MENTION BE VERY FRKN SICK"

ALISON H replied: "Never mix drink and drugs - too dangerous."

KayKay replied: "no your should not drink while taking the zoloft! It could cause you to fall into coma and death! Either drink or take the zoloft but not both!"

Kara S replied: "Are you crazy? Don't EVER mix any drug with alcohol, especially psychological ones. It can kill you, duh."

Go Red Wings! replied: "please don't."

elmoslover replied: "All the other answers are wrong. It will not make you sick to mix the two."

Annabo B replied: "I am on Zoloft 100mg and drink regularly. It has no effect,so go ahead.,"

Vashti replied: "It won't make you sick, but it's not a good idea. Quit drinking completely for at least a month, to have the Zoloft a chance to work on your brain's chemistry. After that, plan on drinking (moderately) once a month max or you're wasting your time and money even taking the Zoloft."

graceunderpressure replied: "I have a friend who is taking the 25mg amount of zoloft too. She drinks sometimes but not to the point of passing out and such. Maybe 2-4 beers, enough to where she is just buzzed. It all depends on you and your body. here check out this: "

Drinking While Taking Generic Zoloft?!? need a REAL answer!? I'm going to Panama city with a huge group of girls for a girls week. Were going to be gone for four days. I do take a 50-mg of generic zoloft every night, since i'm on such a small dose of medicine would the alcohol affect me. Were all planning on getting drunk probably almost every night were there... (its panama city.. who doesn't) what should I do? should I skip my medicine till I get completely sober after the four days? should I take it anyway since its such a small dose, and switch to taking it in the morning instead? would it be life threatening or permanently harmful? I have been on antidepressants for about almost 5 years now, when I usually drink a large amount at parties. It doesn't effect me. I dont get hangovers or anything. Please dont give me some smart comment about how im dumb for drinking and I should stop and what not. I do not drink very often only about 2 times a month. Please give me a SPECIFIC answer. Otherwise keep your comments to yourself. Thank you so much for your time!!

Beetlejuice replied: "Don't take that stuff if you're going to be getting drunk. Zoloft was one of the medications Michael Jackson ingested shortly before he died"

Can you drink liquor while taking Zoloft? I know it's not recommended, but it does not say anywhere "DO NOT DRINK" like with some medications. Can I assume the recommendation is due to the fact that alcohol is a depressant and you're taking Zoloft to combat depression? I'm not planning any wild drinking.. just a few here and there.. I'm an adult... and I read the information on the Zoloft website.. WHORE

deaddolly replied: "I have with no problems. Just a drink or two tho...nothing excessive."

capricorn dancer♥ replied: "It should not be consumed in large amounts, alcohol is a social thing(or should be) if you are in a social situation that's great, can help lift your depression,it's when that social situation borders on peer pressure that alcohol is dangerous and some ppl drink in excess if depressed to drown their sorrows. It would be counter-productive to drink large amounts of alcohol and take antidepressants."

Tox Doc replied: "You should always limit alcohol with any medication. Since Zoloft (sertraline) is an antidepressant, it is probably not a good idea to take another drug (alcohol) that also changes mood (up or down). However, that being said, there is little or no interaction between alcohol and Zoloft or other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) meds. Zoloft has one of the widest safety margins of all similar antidepressant meds. Just FYI. Social drinking for a woman is no more than about 2 drinks and for men, no more than about 3 drinks per occasion. Once you get beyond ABOUT 4 drinks you are getting into more problem-related drinking."

Question for those who take Zoloft re: alcohol? I notice that I feel 100% better when I don't drink alcohol while taking this medication. What experiences can you relate to between alcohol and zoloft. I am working on drastically reducing my alcohol intake at this time. Yes, I do have a tendancy to binge drink once or twice a week. I used to get away with it before I began taking Zoloft.

Amber E replied: "maybe it's a sign and you should stop either binge-ing or taking zoloft but if you are drinking to get away from your problems then why would you start taling zoloft? or are you drinking to drink?"

sarge927 replied: "My father-in-law takes Zoloft, and his doctor told him he should not drink while taking it. Apparently you can get away with one glass of wine every night for health reasons, but heavy drinking and Zoloft can be a lethal combination. So my advice to you is to cut way back or cut it out altogether."

Slacker replied: "From -- "Can I drink alcohol while on Zoloft? Taking Zoloft with alcohol isn't recommended. " Zoloft is a drug to help ease depression. Alcohol is a DEPRESSANT. You do the math there."

Anyone taking Zoloft also gets drunk? I've been taking Zoloft 25 mg for 5 years now for anxiety attacks except 9 months when I became pregnant. Anyways, my question is... has anyone gotten drunk while taking Zoloft? I know Dr.'s say you shouldnt drink while taking prescription drugs but sometimes I would like to have a couple of drinks of I get very afraid of the side effect. I havent had a drink of alcohol for almost 6 years. Can anyone inform me? Thanks

Ziggy Stardust replied: "I think most doctors, prescription labels say not to drink on any type of SSRI, but I have drank on Lexapro and Paxil and haven't really experienced any negative side effects other than a hangover the next morning, which I guess is normal. I don't think I would worry about it."

letterstoheather replied: "If you are drinking for self-medication, it's a bad thing. If your medications are not working for you properly, why not take the sensible route, and talk with your doctor about your symptoms? Perhaps it's time for a medication adjustment. I dont' think there is anything wrong with social drinking. But i can tell you i have a mental illness, and the reason i drank was all about self-medication. It's not a good thing."

200 mg zoloft and 150 mg efexor, can i still drink alcahol? i´m taking 200mg zoloft and 150 mg efexor for severe depression and ocd. And tonight some of my friends keep asking me to go out tonight. I was wondering what could happen if i drink alcohol while on these meds. And is it wise?.... i drank alcahol while only on zoloft, and there nothing happened really.. but what could happen if i drink alcahol while on these meds. And is it wise?

me replied: "Not really no.Can't you go anyway?"

Erica W replied: "You can practically die!!"

cookie b replied: "i wouldnt advise it to be honest. it should state on the insturctions if alcohol is allowed or not. always follow the instructions for the medication. plus of you have severe depression i wouldnt drink any alcohol anyways as alcohol is a depressant. depression + depressant = a very unhappy bunny! can you not just go out anyway and not drink alcohol?"

Zoloft33 replied: "I take 150 mg of Zoloft daily and to answer your question, you can drink. It will lessen the effects of the medicine for Zoloft, maybe increasing you OCD tendencies. On the other hand, I'm not sure if you are allowed to drink while taking Efexor. To be safe, go out with your buddies and have a good time but keep the drinking to a minimum! Good Luck with everything man."

I got drunk while taking zoloft now I feel sad a week later? I know, I'm stupid, one night at a party I got drunk after taking zoloft for about 3 weeks Now, a week later, it feels like I'm not even taking the drug, yesterday after a moment of disappointment I had a crying spell and felt really down and couldn't do anything like I used to before taking the medication Is this because of the alcohol incident over a week ago or is it because I need a higher dosage? And yes, I know that I should not be drinking, I had a moment of weakness

Melissa R replied: "drinking is one of the worst things you can do while on anti depressants, or other related meds...it can sometimes cause brain damage or damage to other organs"

––––•(-•Åt®ë¥ü•-)•–––– replied: "DO NOT drink while on Zoloft... .first of all. You more than likely do need a higher dosage,I took Zoloft for a year when I was 11 years old. Are you taking it everyday? not missing any days on it? Go back to your psychiatrist and let them know about your problem."

jrzer7 replied: "Usually it would make you depressed the night of drinking and maybe for a day or two. If you still feel depressed after a week I would go back to the doctor. Tell them what happened. After some time on the medicine you may create a tolerance in a sense, and it will not be as effective. Your doctor will up the dosage or try something new. Also you usually start with small dosage when first starting and gradually work your way up until you feel it is effectively working."

DerangedKitten replied: "Three weeks isn't very long, it takes about a month to get into your system properly & you'll probably need a higher dose anyway, but I wouldn't directly link it to the booze."
