What are the alternatives for the heart failure drug, Coreg? My mother has had some issues arise with her health, since beginning the use of Coreg. Her white bone marrow cells are dropping and she is showing a loss in her kidney functions. Also she is showing in her blood work that anemia is creeping up on her. She is acting as if she may be allergic to this medication. Mom has reacted to Lumigan(which is also a beta blocker). Within six months of using lumigan, she was nearly blind in her. Her eye Dr. Put her on a different medication and the sight came back. She is allergic to the beta blocker(lumigan). after reasearching the beta blocker, coreg, I now see the possibility of her being allergic to the heart failure drug,Coreg. We will be seeing her Dr. in a couple of days and would like a suggestion as to what might replace the Coreg should the Dr. agree that this is possible.

Stingray replied: "There are more people dying from prescription drugs than you are allowed to read about. Had you mentioned why your mother was using Coreg, I could point you in the direction of Natural Physicians Healing Therapies which are proven remedies that Medical Doctors don't know about or don't use. There are pressure points all over the body that can clear up blocked points that control the well being of the heart and other bodily organs. There are countless vitamins and home remedies that work but the Major Drug Company talking points put all that down as hog wash. Try reading: Natural Cures "They" Don't Want You To Know About by Kevin Trudeau ... this book tells you about those "natural cures" that are already common knowledge. By the way, I am not a radical, I am a realist, and in case you haven't figured it out yet, . . . . . . .It's all about the money. Darryl S."

Mark S replied: "Look at this link then go the one below and witch the free movie. both guys are MD's that have reversed heart disease without drugs. See also"

Cogito ergo sum replied: "One possibility, which should not be taken without her doctor's permission, is Coenzyme Q10, often referred to colloquially as CoQ10, which causes the heart muscle to pump with greater strength, thus helping the body to eliminate excess water in the lungs, for example, which is a typical symptom of congestive heart failure, and the edema that accumulates in the lower legs. The elimination of excess water in turn reduces the burden on the heart, allowing it to pump more efficiently, resulting in a reduction in the typical enlargement of the heart that accompanies congestive heart failure."

c_sakal replied: "Well, coreg is also a beta blocker (well, it has alpha activity as well, but mostly beta) and there is also some evidence to indicate that it's the best beta blocker for heart failure. However, there are two drugs in that class which have FDA approval for heart failure and have shown some efficacy, coreg and Toprol XL. So in order to replace the coreg, she would be put on another drug in the same class, she is probably on drugs from other classes which have shown to improve survival in heart failure patients. However, if your mother has had so many problems with beta blockers in the past (I have to admit though, those are not common side effects, it's hard to imagine it's from the coreg) then possibly it may be best to stop them altogether, there are many other drugs that heart failure patients get put on, beta blockers are only one piece of the puzzle."

Can the prescription drug Coreg be addictive? I'm doing a report on it and I can't find anything on the topic. I'm guessing it can be. Can't any drug be addictive?

nikkigirl500 replied: "Not any drug can be addictive, not easily. Coreg is a narcotic and they r very easy to get addicted to, so if u use it for like 2 or more weeks talk to a doctor to whein off of it."

What does the pill coreg look like? I take the drug coreg.I need to know what it looks like.I have one pill left but I don't know for sure it is coreg.

Does anyone know how you can get cheap heart drugs? I have an ICD and lost my health ins and can't afford meds? I can't afford the meds anymore like plavix and coreg for starters.

ckm1956 replied: "1) look into Medicaid 2) Go to - that's a site that will direct you to patient assistance programs for your meds."

Jan C replied: "I notice on television that many companies offer to assistance to those who have this problem. As the pharmacist what the brand is and then contact them. Good luck."

chattterus replied: "If they have generic version some pharmacies have programs were your first prescription with them is only 15 dollars for a 90 day worth of pills. Then the local Kmart will continue that price with all the renewals of the prescription. I've been on that special for 3 years now. Also what state are you in? Most states have a high risk insurance pool aimed at people who can't get health insurance."

Greyeagle replied: "Check with your local health Dept.as they may be able to help or know the ones who can! God Bless!"

Please explain why someone with Hyperkalemia would be prescribed? High doses of Potassium 3x daily and why would a person who has low bloodpressure 90/50 and CHF be prescribed drugs like Coreg, and Imdur, both of which cause reduction in blood pressure?

Wendy C replied: "Wow, this is not good. Hyperkalemia as you know is high potassium, so I don't know why a doctor would prescribe potassium 3 times per day when they already have a high potassium level. And you are right about Coreg. Coreg is used for people who have high blood pressure. Imdur is used for people who have angina, but one of the precautions with Imdur is not to take it if you have low blood pressure. I am unsure if you are talking about yourself or someone you know, but the physician needs to be questioned regarding this and personally I would find another physician. I know that does not answer your question as to why, but I have no answer as to why this would be done. It does not make any sense as to why these would be prescribed with the information you have given. Best wishes."

Reality Jack replied: "Hmmmmm......does not seem correct. This question needs to be presented to the prescriber of the meds."

RxDr replied: "I would first ask if the physician who prescribed the potassium knew that you had hyperkalemia. I would then want to know what your potassium is and what other medications you are taking. Some medications, like diuretics, cause your body to get ride of potassium, so many doctors prescribe potassium to replace that which is lost. Be sure all the doctors you see know what you are taking and what your lab works reveals Coreg and Imdur are really good medications for heart problems. They do work on high blood pressure, angina, ect., but they can be healpful in other conditions also. Again I would need to know all of the story before jumping to the conclusion that they Dr. has made a mistake. You should always feel free to questions your Dr. about anything and everything. You need to take your healthcare into your own hands and ask questions! If a Dr. doesn't want to answer your questions then get a new Dr."

miranda replied: "well that doesint sound to healthy, but i guess doctors know best, but it may help to make sure to eat a healthy diet and stick with natural organtic foods!! you may feel better and excercise with harming yourself ofcourse!!"

Some Guy replied: "If you're concerned about drug interactions you can talk to your pharmacist about it. If you get them all at the same pharmacy then they should know your history and be checking it for you before they give you a prescription. You can also check this website that will tell you about drug intereactions. Just click on the interactions link on top of the page and you can put your drugs in and it will tell you. Best Wishes! "

Rita replied: "that is really bad even it is good for u i think that it is also bad my aunt takes a lot of medicine to so if that is suppose to help i pray to GOD to bless u and keep u."

hootie replied: "First, I hope you have good insurance, your drug bill alone is outrageous. I am sure it isn't safe to take all those drugs for a person with a normal heart, but in your case your doctor believes you need them. I wouldn't stop taking any without consulting the doctor first. There are herbs and such that help people I know. I am on a vegetable supplement called juice plus. I have a small heart problem, I haven't had to take any medicine for it for some time now. Look on the intranet at juice plus and see if it is something you are interested in."

mutantalbino replied: "I have heart failure and take a basket load myself. It seems to be the fate of those with heart failure. By the way, Dioxin makes the heart squeeze harder and slow down. I'm surprised you are not on Warfin with a 20% EF. I had a sheet clot in one chamber when I went in the hospital. I've been taking it ever since. Link provides some medication basics. Mine: Nitrodure Nitroquick Wafarin Altace Digoxin Furosemide Potassium CL Toprol XL Plavix Zetia ZOCOR NIASPAN Want a handful of pills for lunch??"
