What is the likeliness of side effects when taking penicillin? I have been prescribed 100ml of penicillin to take over 5 days, 5ml 4 times a day. I have had 10ml so far and haven't had any side effects. What is the likelihood that I will get side effects and how long will it take for me to know?

sal1970 replied: "unless you have an allergic reaction, you likely won't have any side effects. report a rash, hives, itching, or wheezing which are signs of an allergic reaction. occasionally, penicllin will cause an over growth of thrush or yeast."

Erik replied: "You have taken more than two doses so the risk for a serious side effect (allergic reaction) is now extremely low. Side effects like loose stools are still possible due to changed bacterial bowel flora. That's perfectly normal when taking penicillin and nothing to worry about. Other side effects like yeast overgrowth can also happen. According to wikipedia the risk for side-effects is around 1 %."

Medical Futureā„¢ replied: "Most common are allergic reactions, which include: nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath, tightness of the throat & chest, and hives. Sometimes the reaction can be so severe it can cause shock, and a drop in blood pressure. Other non-allergic reactions to antibiotics include intestinal problems such as diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. This occurs because the antibiotics destroy not only the bad bacteria, but the good intestinal bacteria as well"

What are side effects of taking injection of penicillin-12 lakhs? What are side effects of taking injection of penicillin-12 lakhs

Ramabadhranandha R replied: "As for I know penicillin can be given any amount, there are only two groups of penicillin inj is available 1.procaine penicillin which used to kids aged up to 7 years min, and other is used for sexually transmitted decease by a dermatologist."

What are the side effects of penicillin and other antibiotics? Has anyone had any problems when taking antibiotics? also, what are some of the things you shouldn't drink,(besides alcohol) with antibiotics? Thank you for your comments. :)

la madre de quattro replied: "well, you just have to follow the directions on the bottle, some say take with food and some say don't. If you don't, then dont take with milk. You should never take any meds or vitamins with Tea. Tea leeches everything from whatever you eat with it, so anything you want to absorb into your bloodstream shouldn't be had in conjunction with tea. Most antibiotics dont have many side effects other than killing the germ, however, penicillin is notorious for causing a yeast infection in women cause it kills so much bacteria that it kills the good bacteria as well as the bad. I would recommend zithromax instead and always finish your meds. Not finishing a perscription makes the strain stronger and then in turn creates super bugs and can kill people in the future."

How do I counteract the side effects of Penicillin?Pls help!? I am on a 5 day course of Penicillin for a gum infection. I am very sensitive to antibiotics (although not allergic) and I'm very nervous of any side-effects I might get. Apart from taking probiotics and vitamin C,what else could I do? I am prone to eczema, but otherwise quite healthy. I'm a vegan and never eat junk. I don't drink or smoke. Thanks!

Caleb F replied: "I won't even go into the whole vegan thing with you but I will tell you it will bite you in the *** later on. It does eveyone. Now for the penicillin there isn't really anything you can do to combat any side affects that you might get with it. As long as it is not an allergy that will threaten your well being or life all you can do is deal. Maybe next time you should ask for a synthetic anti biotic."

liz replied: "go back 2 the chemist and c the pharmacist, about it, do not leave that sort of prob."

old know all replied: "The worst you'll get from a 5 day course is loose bowels in the morning and a slight rash on your arms. That's got to be better than a gum infection. Probiotics will help the gut to recover (if you weren't vegan, I'd suggest plenty of live yoghurt). The rash will sort itself out although a bit of sunlight will help."

cutup replied: "I can sympathise - the couple of times Ive had to take an anti-biotic I've felt terribly sick. However dont fret because its only temporary so grit your teeth and it will pass. Alternatively you could ask your doc if theres a topical anti biotic you could use - i.e. - an antibiotic gel or cream that is used externally. Maybe not as likely for a mouth infection but you certainly get them for other infections. Its worth asking!"

Raven Eyes JPA replied: "I'm not going to waste my time responding to the first reply. A PROPER vegan diet is completely healthy and will not bite anyone anywhere. Look at upping your intake of food rich in antioxidants - blueberries etc. Make sure that you are drinking 2 - 3 litres of water a day to keep yourself well hydrated, and you should be just fine. Of course, I don't need to remind you that if the side effects are problematic, that you should report them to your doctor. Hope this helps."

Victoria replied: "Taking Vitamin B complex helps the digestive side effects. I get nausea from taking anti biotics so I usually buy an over the counter anti sickness tablet eg. domperidone."

Pisceswoman_65 replied: "If you are sensitive to antibiotics but not allergic there is not much that can be done to counteract the reaction beforehand. I know that a corticosteroid can be introduced after the reaction is underway but that is quite risky unless your reaction is severe. Speak with your doctor to get further input, he/she is the best barometer of what you should do at this point in time. Good luck!"

sashs.geo replied: "Could you come off the vegan diet for 5 days? If so live yoghurt is one of the best and natural products to put your gut back to how it should be. Take the antibiotics with water only. Some fruit juices can interact with antibiotics so either don't drink them or drink several hours after your pills."

How long after finishing anitbiotic (penicillin) will the side effects stop? I finished it today, but I've had stomach cramps/aching and a nauseous feeling for the past 5 days... When will the side effects go away?!

PATRICIA MS replied: "Several days. One of the worst side effects for women is vaginal irritation. It will cease after several days."

penicillin cancels out the effects of birth control pills? Does it? o_o I'm currently taking it due to wisdom teeth extraction. Does that mean the second i get off of penicillin, birth control pills has effects again or do I have a period of waiting? :(

daddyrx replied: "Penicillin does decrease the effectiveness of BCP's. Use an additional form of contraception, condom, while you take the penicillin and for 7-10 after you have finished them."

the effects of over-using penicillin, an antibiotic commonly used for strep-throat? I've been getting a lot of strep-throat infections once every 3-weeks to every month in the back-wall of my throat, and they keep re-occurring. are there any side effects to over using penicillin, like drug resistance? *edit* I always finish all my antibiotics, as directed by my doctor. also, would the strep throat bacteria not become drug resistant if I were to change antibiotics?

Candy replied: "First of all you need to be sure you finish your entire dose till gone, otherwise the resistance of the bacteria will be stronger each time. If you are doing that consult your Dr. you might need something stronger."

Stephen Colbert for President replied: "You are not becoming drug resistant to the penicillin, but whatever is causing your strep-throat is. Bacteria can become resistant, and viruses will go unaffected no matter what. Get a second opinion, and or get different anti-biotics. Taking them too long-term could possibly harm your liver, but your likely safe."

Kooter replied: "You may become more susceptable to infections, bacteria and colds."

Barb M replied: "Antibiotic resistance is more and more common. My son used to get strep, get treatment with penicillin, and then in three to four days after finishing the medicaton get it again. The doctor finally put him on sulfa and he has never had strep again."
