Will elavil cause extreme weight gain? I have extreme abdominal pain and am desperate but don't want to gain I have for a year had extreme lower left abdominal pain which the doctors say are ibs. none of the medication or lifestyle changes have helped. the doctors now want me to try elavil and see if it helps. Extreme weight gain is listed as a side effect. I am actually trying to lose weight and get in shape. I don't want to take the pill and become a whale. Can you take it without gaining weight or is it invetiable. Should I try elavil?

sokokl replied: "Yes, you might gain weight while taking the Elavil but trying to eat healthy may help keep the amount of weight gain to a minimum. Because of the extreme abdominal pain which could be an indication of something like endometriosis (an example only) I would recommend getting another opinion, preferably from someone that does not share the same office of the doctors you now see. Nae Nae replied: "Not all. The main thing is to fight the hunger from these medications. I know I struggled with it as well. And the main thing is never eat after 8:00 P.M. Drink lots of water and get lots of excercise. You should also get your thyroid and insulin level checked. It could be something completely unrelated to the medications. And definetly inform your physician of these weight gains, if he does not find a solution a second opinion will not hurt to try."

vze2wy4t replied: "They can cause cravings for sweets, but not necessarily bloating. Are you moving your bowels regularly? They can cause constipation. Eat fresh fruit, raisin bran, and fresh vegetables. Try to eat fruit when you have cravings, and don't eat after 7 pm"

Will Elavil (Amotryptolin) make me gain weight? I've been thinking about taking Elavil for my insomnia and depression, but what side effects will it cause?

HealthCareProvider replied: "Who recommended Elavil for insomnia?? It is for depression but one of its side effects is insomnia and yes it can cause weight gain. Elavil is a tricyclic drug and aren't considered first line even for depression, unless you have tried other things already, but it defiently will not help your insomnia. This doesn't sound like a good drug for you, I would talk to who thought it would be."

You said you can't work out because of injuries, but maybe you can try walking. Even just walking around the block will get you started. It will also help your body heal. good luck"

What are my chances of getting kidney stones taking Topamax? I have never had a kidney stone before.? I'm very worried about it, but seems like a good option for pain and all other nonnarcoticspain meds I've tried (Elavil, Gabapentin etc) cause huge weight gain for me.
