birth control pills still effective with antibiotic levaquin? I am taking an antibiotic called levaquin (maybe levofloxacin more specifically) and i was wondering if it reduces the effects of my birth control pills. I read the drug information that came with it but it didnt mention anything. The birth control pills are called microgestin, i dont know if it matters what kind it is, but yeah. So if anyone knows if the antibiotics reduce the effectiveness of the birth control pills, please let me know! thanks :)

Michelle replied: "I wouldn't take the chance. I think it would reduce the effects of the pill"

MacMomma replied: "i've heard from a lot of doctors when i take antibiotics that I need to use a back up method during and at least three weeks after taking them. call your doctor and ask though because I'm not sure about levaquin. It's a fairly strong antibiotic so better to ask."

getThis gotThat replied: "ask your doctor"

eeyorestail replied: "I wouldn't take the chance. Use back up birth control until you have completed this birth control pill cycle."

Is it okay to take Levaquin with Glimepiride? I am a type 2 diabetic and take a combination of Glimepiride and Metformin. I currently have a head and chest cold and went to a local clinic for treatment as I have a severe cough and sinus infection and my doctor is out of town until next week. The clinic doctor prescribed Levaquin which seems to be an antibiotic. I checked the Internet for information and the Levaquin website says not to take in conjunction with Glipizide or other types of these kinds of medicines. I'm not sure what to do.

bungy_heart replied: "Quinalones (Levaquin) can 'potentiate the effects of Glimepiride', meaning that you could get a hypo by mixing them. There's no real way to know how much the effect will be, so I'd go back to your own GP. It may be OK for you if you monitor your sugars carefully, or it may be a complete disaster. The clinic doctor wouldn't know that you'd have to avoid this unless you told him/her. Having said that, this isn't the best place to ask this question - you have no idea who's answering it. Phone your doc or ask a pharmacist. I wouldn't be taking it until you're sure."

Gedalya replied: "Yes, Levaquin is an antibiotic. Is the prescribing doctor aware that you are on these other drugs ? If not, it's best to call him/her and ask if it's safe. If they do know about it and prescribed it anyway, it's very possible that the interactions between the two are only under certain conditions (i.e. renal failure) and therefore it's safe to use together if you don't meet certain criteria. I checked them against each other in my interaction guide and it showed no interactions. But, always follow your doctors directions . Here's an on-line interaction checker if you're interested.... ,,00.html?=SOTALOL Have a blessed day :-)"
