Top Questions and Answers
Headache and Narcotic Question? I have suffered from cluster headaches for the past 5 years. I have been on Nortriptyline, Maxalt, Cafergot, Midrin, Zanaflex, Zoloft, Prozac, and OTC meds for the headaches. I have had MRI's performed and my vision checked. I have a neurologist appt. scheduled for Friday. What are the chances that the doctor will prescribe me a narcotic? I am in unbelievable pain and cannot continue to function like this. I need help! I am a 24 year old female.

jeff m replied: "I feel for you, I also suffered from cluster headaches for many years until a doctor prescribed me Amiltriptyline...A miracle in a pill!! Any doctor that knows anything about these nasty headaches knows that narcotics can (and usually do) make them even worse. I also heard that Sumatriptan works well too, but have never tried it. Good Luck!"

phxmilitarymom replied: "If your appointment with the neuro does not go well you might consider getting a referral to a pain management clinic. Not only will they be very understanding of your problems, they will also assist you with major pain control while trying to find what the problem is and how best to fix it. They have an entirely different mind set than other physicians due to the fact they are in business to assist people that are in pain and they treat the pain as well as the problem. A lot of Dr's that are outside this field don't like to prescribe too many pain medications as they don't like to be audited and too many pain prescriptions written on their license gives reason for an audit. Pain centers are very sympathetic to the patient and you will be pleasantly surprised at how much they care and the fact that they don't bat an eye at giving you proper pain control and seeing you every month or more to keep assisting you. If you get a medication that does not work for you, you just take it back to them, they do a count to be sure you are not taking more than you should be and re-issue a new prescription. You can also change if it is not working for you at your next appointment. I hope you get the answers you need but if you don't I strongly urge you to see a PM Dr. I hope your MRI turns out okay too. Best of luck to you."

Rachel T replied: "Narcotics are not the standard of treatment for any type of headache. Trying to find the right combination of medications can be a very painful process, but narcotics tend to make the headaches worse, so they are not typically prescribed, even by PM doctors. You should see one though that specializes in headaches. There are lots of medications and procedures that can be tried such as nerve blocks in the neck. I know how you feel. I have had migraine headaches since I was a kid and they got worse when I got older. It took quite a while to find the right combination of medications for me, but we did find them and my migraines are much better. But I did have to go see a PM doc that specialized in treating headaches. Most major cities even have headache centers where they only deal with cluster headaches, migraines, etc. Good luck."

Is it illegal to send prescription drugs through the mail? My mom was visiting me last weekend and when she left, she forgot her pills and her foster kids' pills. They are things like ibroprofen 800 mg and zoloft and things like that ...non narcotic things. She really needs these pills because those kids are driving her insane ...but I am afraid I will get into trouble for sending them ...Is it okay to send them?

Brenda replied: "I don't think you will have a problem with it since she has a legal prescription and you are sending them to her. I do it all the time."

jt replied: "The USPS (post office) has rather detailed regulations about mailing medications; see. You might be better off simply going to the post office with a list of the medications and asking a postal worker."

What can i do to cure my anxiety w/out taking narcotics like xanax and w/out taking sucky pills like zoloft? social anxiety problem

cvegas229 replied: "work out, it releases endorphines and seratonine, just like Zoloft"

Judy the Wench replied: "vodka"

Jaigurl replied: "I dont have a Ph.D in Couseling matters but I would encourage you to speak with a medical doctor and ask them what your options are if you dont want to take medications. Some things I would recommend include drinking hot tea, excercising regularly, keeping a healthy dies, not abusing recreational drugs, writing in a journal, meditating and involving yourself in a regular hobby or sport. Good Luck."

LuckyTolly replied: "There are a lot of other things you can try besides zoloft. If you tried it and didnt like it then try another one. I have tried paxil, lexapro and wellbutrin. paxil I didnt like, lexapro was alright but wellbutrin works for me. So you really need to talk to a doctor and check out all of your options and different doses. Also I just try to relasx and think about things slowly, count to ten and take deep breaths with my hands on top of my head"

blaze23 replied: "Xanax is not a narcotic its a bensodiazepine. Try diet and exercise, go out with friends."

freddelorme35 replied: "VALIUM!VALIUM!VALIUM!"

chi h replied: "well you pass the first test knowing you have a problem, three you got to start trying to judge people before you talk to them three stop judging your self too."

william m replied: "Hey, why not check out this site: It has helped many people stop panic/anxiety attacks.... All the best..."

kmack replied: "Meditation?"

So if they pass healthcare for everyone, I will be debt free, live forever, and be rich? Will I at least get free narcotics every now and then to ease the pain? OMG! I just figured it out! Do you think its a conspiracy to make everyone take Zoloft to they won't question congress?

Lala replied: "Not unless you already are. However, you may be able to afford your meds as a senior!"

QUASAR replied: "AHHHHH HAHAHAHAHA! Who are you joking with here anyway?"

♥ Little Red Hen ♥ replied: "More likely you'll die waiting for days to be next in line for emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix."

wooper replied: "Nope, you'll stil be a fat, unemployed slob sitting on the couch all day listenting to Rush and Hannity."

Star replied: "You won't be debt free, live forever nor be rich.It is a dream."

Angry at Ignorance replied: "You might be able to get some mental health help. Obviously you have not had that luxury. Ask your doctor if Zoloft is right for you because you are one sick puppy. Got any friends? I thought not."

TAT replied: "You will live until you get sick. You will not be rich. The rich are being destroyed. That is why the tax revenue has dropped significantly the last six months BTW, it won't be Zoloft. It is too expensive. It will probably be imipramine"

Contard H. Moshiach replied: "No, but you'll probably have to worry less about going bankrupt if/when you get sick."

New job - will antipressants effect my drug/alcohol test? I have just been offered a new job. On the stipulation that I pass a drug and alcohol test. I'm assuming they are looking primarily for narcotics, which is fine - don't do those. But I do take Zoloft daily (small amount) and Xanax on occasion due to panic attacks and general anxiety. Do these come up on the drug test? If I just went off both how long would it take to come up?

dali333 replied: "they likely arent testing for those drugs so you will be fine.half of the population is on them, so dont worry. these tests are drug specific."

Peachy replied: "It won't show up on the test because it's not one of the things they are testing for. You will be ok!"

shelly replied: "Both of these medications do build in your system. They are non-narcotic and should be fine on your drug testing. When you go for that testing, let them know at the testing facility and they can determine the differences with this. If levels of this would show they can determine if this is a therapeutic level or an abusive level. Don't worry about your testing. You will be fine. Congratulations on the new job!"

Liz S replied: "Take both bottles with you to the test so they will be able to know which drugs might show up. Sometimes Xanax will. It's in the benzodiazaphine family. Be honest with the examiner. Good luck."

Can anyone help me? I have so many symptoms I feel like it is all in my head.? I am a 26 year old mother of 4 kids and a step child. None of my problems really started until I had my tubes tied about two years ago. It first started with these attacks that my doctor finally diagnosed me with anxiety attacks and put me on Zoloft. All the attacks stopped until about 2 months ago. The fear of something bad happening to me and my family started coming back. I havent had any of the attacks yet but I have been waking up in the middle of the night scared. I am also noticing that I have been starting to grind my teeth at night and through out the day my legs, feet and hands will twitch alot but mostly when I am sitting or laying down. I do not drink alcohol and I do not take any other medication. Also I can not take any narcotic pain medication either. I do smoke almost two packs a day and I am in the process of starting the patches to quit smoking. If anyone has any advise or can be of any help please help me! I just wanted to say thank you both for taking the time to help me and to let you know that I took your advise on my hormones and my doctor is looking into some sort of syndrome with having my tubes tied. Cross your fingers for me.

fifty replied: "I don't have many ideas, but I would get a nicotine spray as that gives you a nicotine high. You might try the gum as well. Several things will help you more than one thing when it comes to quitting. I wonder if this is the right time to quit because it must be hard to quit with these panic/anxiety attacks. What is the hormonal change that occurs with tubes being tied? You might try to temporarily replace those hormones and see if your symptoms go away."

clara replied: "Sounds like you still might be suffering anxiety to me, I've suffered with it from time to time with very similar symptoms. Have you had any added stress or worries lately that could have triggered it off? Having had four kids myself I realise how stressful that can be sometimes too. You say that it started after you have your tubes tied, have you had any period or hormonal problems since, maybe you have an imbalance and that would add to the problem. The trouble is once you start having anxiety it's a bit of a vicious circle because I suppose it's always in the back of your mind that you might have another one which just adds to your anxious state. You don't have any stimulants so that's good but if you do have caffeine that is one of the worse culprits and chocolate can make it worse in some people too apparently. Well done to you for wanting to stop smoking are you doing it under medical supervision? It would be better maybe if you did as he could keep an eye on the anxiety problem at the same time as quitting anything can add to your anxiety levels of course. Have you ever suffered depression? As some symptoms of anxiety like worrying about bad things happening, disturbed or restless sleep can also be symptoms of depression although the twitching and teeth grinding sounds more like anxiety. If I was you I'd go see the Doctor again and tell him how you feel, you shouldn't have to suffer like this especially as you're busy trying to bring up a family too. I hope you sort it out, try and relax whenever you have five minutes peace especially later on in the evening when everyones in bed it's surprising how this can help sometimes a little me time can do you the world of good. All the very best to you hope you feel better soon!"

lisa1cares replied: "quiting smoking is hard to do when you have mental health problems. I managed 3 months then it all got to much for me. If I was you I would talk with your doctor again and get some help until things start to work out better for you. take care good luck"

I was taking 10 mg percocets for lower back pain, now my doctor switched me to 50 mg of tramadol, how is this? I was taking 10 mg percocets for lower back pain, now my doctor switched me to 50 mg of tramadol, how is this? I was taking 10 mg percocets for lower back pain, now my doctor switched me to 50 mg of tramadol, how is this? The percocets worked fine for me but after 2 years they seem to be getting strict on giving percs out. Thay also relaxed me to tell you the truth. I am a very stressed person and the narcotic buzz wrked well for me as well as allowing me to work. I was wondering hw the tramadol will work. Do you get high, relaxed like oxycodone or no. If so how many mg of tramadol will it take to eqaul a 1 mg perc. Is tramadol a narcotic, opite? I have severe aniexty and the percs seemed to help more than vauil or ativan. they just relaxed me and like i said relieved the pian but my doc is a prick. I have been to foriegn countries, Mexico, Canada, France and if you are in pain the goverment doesnt control and watch the doctor like this country. Its BS. We pay outragous medical insurance rates but cant get medicine when needed. I told my doctor it easier t get med i need on the street that form him, which is rediculous. I have severe back issues and hate the shots they want to gove me, chiro has done nothing and pain management also sucked. I had to pay a co pay 3 times a week to get treatment. I cant afford that or all that time off work when all i need is what he ha me on 10 mg percs. I cant see the problem gettn g med you need these days, yet they will give you all these pyscotropic drugs like candy, riddlin, Zoloft, ect with i think is worst for you

ladyindica replied: "Apparently your doctor is concerned that maybe you have become addicted to Percocet, which is EXTREMELY easy to do, and as your doctor he has to do something about that. From your letter it sounds like maybe you have become addicted, especially since you've stated you like and are seeking the "high" and the relaxing qualities of the drug. You wouldn't be the first person to start seeking drugs on the street because you couldn't get them from the doctor any more. The graveyards are full of people like that."

sharon g replied: "i have been taking tramadol 50mg for 1 year now for fybrmyalga and also for a knee injury 2 winters ago, if it was not for tram i would not be able to go to work and do all the walking that i do ,i love it and it perks me up very well good luck"

novice replied: "Get off the painkillers as long as you still got a chance because both of them are addictive. I know plenty of people who are addicted to painkillers and trying to get off them seems to be horrible. If you have chrinic lower back pain and conventional medicine doesn't help you might want to consider the holistic approach or chiropractice. I have serious athritis but instead of taking celebrex every day do I only take one if it is absolutely necessary--drug companies want you to be addicted because that means more money for them--just like cigarette companies want smokers to be addicted--because that's more money for them.....I realized a long time ago what is going on with these drugs and decided that even though I pay only 3 bucks for any prescription that I was better off spending my money on natural supplements and stay healthy---so, try to get off that stuff and good luck..."

bluebird replied: "Have you ever had the shots? If the physician uses a florascope and you complete the three series of injections you may get some relief. Have you ever discused a muscle relaxant with the physician? The needle is the size used on premature babies, ask to be put under it is easier. Best source of info for comparsions with meds is to ask to a pharmacist."

save-a-life replied: "Tramadol is a "non- narcotic" opiate. It is supposed to have less addictive qualities to it. Maybe you need a medley of meds. Or maybe you need a new doctor. Sorry."

bassdoc replied: "These drugs are all harmful to you in the long run, and having a prescription in your hand doesnt make you any less an addict. See a chiropractor to stop your pain, then concentrate on quitting drugs. Best luck."

how to get back my libido? i am a 25 year old married woman. i have been dealing with crohn's disease for over 3 years and due to that have become dependent on narcotics. i also take zoloft for mild depression. for the past year or more, my libido has gone ka-put. i mean, not just at home, but i can't even look at another man and thing, mmm, what if? ya know? what am i to do? how can i get it back? this has had a huge negative impact on my marriage and i am afraid i am gonna lose everything if i can't make a change... i don't even like kissing, or barely hand holding... i don't know what to do... anyone have any ideas? i have only been taking zoloft for 3 months.. libido has been gone for over a year, so i don't think its that. and no, i do not have a parasite.. i definately have crohn's. i am not going into detail, you'll just have to trust me on that..

sstubbs30 replied: "The Zoloft kills your libido. If you can't quit taking it I would suggest you ask your doctor for some wellbutrin. My doc told me that would help with the libido problem the Zoloft causes."

Bob T replied: "Tell your doctor. My wife was on depression meds and had them changed at least twice by the doctor. It is not easy for you or for your husband. It is not easy for me to know that my wife's libido is so low. Please talk with a professional and ask for help. Do not bury these problems."

Tacit Rainbow replied: "Have yourself checked for parasites. They can diagnosis as Crohns. Good luck."

thats me replied: "have you talked to your doctor about trying something else....i think that would be best."

judgebill replied: "Dear lovely lady, you have my support on your journey. Begin by acknowledging yourself. You are truly unique. You are the only one in your universe. Love yourself. You deserve it. You are a divine spirit having a human experience. You are being presented with opportunities to learn, grow and experience. Yes, I know it's easy for me to say but it's also true. We can't control what the universe throws at us, we can only control how we react. So control your reaction. Decide how you want to feel about yourself. Decide you are great, you are wonderful, you are fantastic. Celebrate yourself. And share your riches and glory with your loved ones. Your life isn't over until you decide it's over."

Seti replied: "Yikes. Not really sure if narcotics affect your libido, but Zoloft really can. Have you spoken to your doctor about it? I switched to Wellbutrin with good results."

Tori replied: "Zoloft is the culprit!! I tried it for my panic disorder and quit it because it was horrid, nasty stuff. Can you ask your doc if you can try Wellbutrin? I've read it has less incident of sexual side effects. I hope you get 'it' back soon! Good luck and take care!! Tori"

RICHARD T replied: "My wife went through our married life with similar problems. First with IBS and then with cancer. The narcotics have a big role in what is causing your problem. Narcotics will dull your senses to a point that you can actually be a walking zombie and not even realize it. The longer you are on them the more your body is able to function in every day activities, but when it comes to the senses they don't react the same way because the brain functions using electrical pulses instead of muscle like your arms, legs, etc. You can easily walk across the street, but as far as your emotions - you become numb emotionally. We did find a few ways to help. First - talk to your doctor about reducing dosages for short periods of time. This allows your brain to start feeling pain, but it will also allow you to feel pleasure. It is a trade off, but my wife found it worth it once in awhile. You can also talk to your husband(honestly) let him know that you love him and there is no problem with him - it is a problem with medication. Tell him it may require some patience and more work on his part. If he spends more foreplay time and take some guidance from you about what makes you feel better, you will be able to enjoy your lovemaking sessions more. I'm sure he will glad to help in any way at all because it's got to just as frustrating to him. With disease you can't ever expect a lovelife like most people, but you can still have enjoyment and a quality of a good marriage. As far as adjusting drug dosages, my wife's doctor told her that she could cut herself back to whatever pain level she could handle, but not to eliminate the drugs completely. That can be dangerous when your body becomes accustomed to the drugs. We had to experiment a bit before she found the right dosage. She would start reducing them about 24 to 36 hours prior to and would start back on regular dose immediately after. You should talk to your doctor and your husband about all of this before attempting it, but I honestly think you will regain the feeling of being human again(as my wife put it). Good Luck."

Lortab/hydrocodone addiction and pregnancy? i am 33 weeks pregnant. Have been prescribed lortab in various strengths for the past year for nueropathy. I sometimes would take up to 12 per day of 5 mg or 6 -8 10 mg. I also have depression (sometimes i think from the narcotic addiction) and have been taking effexor 225 mg and zoloft 50 mg. daily i am 4 weeks from dellivery and have gone cold turkey from all meds the last 3 days. today seems to be the worst. I am throwing up constantly and feel as though i am not getting enough oxygen in my head (feel floaty??). I cannot tell my doctors of my problems because I am too embarassed and do not want them to think of me as an addict (which I am). i have beat alcohol, cigarettes, food over the years so I know I can do this too. my question is how long will i feel this way? I don't think the baby is in any danger as she is still moving lots and I have a doppler that I check her heartbeat with that is normal. Any insight?

Beth replied: "For the sake of your baby you have to put your pride aside and tell the doctor so that they can be prepared at the delivery if the baby has any withdrawal or complications from these substances."

texasmarajade replied: "oh honey , yes. you need to call your doctor and be totally frank with them. although I do so much commend your wish to drop all the drugs, this might not have been a good time to decide to go cold turkey. with four weeks from delivery, you might bring on a labor that your not ready for. the key to remember when your pregnant, what you feel, your baby feels. if your sick, your baby is sick. I have hda 4 children, and was a member of the la leche league for many years. I do so much want you to know that I think it is a good idea for your to attempt to quit what you are taking at some point, however, if you have already been taking these things during your pregnancy, your child has ingested what you have ingested and may be experiencing the same withdrawals that you are. the up side to being open and honest with your doctor is that there are alternative drugs that can be taken to ease your pain and to ease what your child may be going through, or at least will alert them to any possible dangers that might be brought on by your going cold turkey. I wish you well and a wonderful experience in your child birth. now, tell your doctor. there is no shame in being a human with failings. we are all subject to not always making good decisions in life. it's part of our humaness."

Billie77 replied: "Withdrawal effects can last for several weeks, especially going cold turkey. I agree with the other person who answered that you really should talk to your doctor, for the sake of your baby. I am going to give you suggestions that will help ease the withdrawal symptoms. But my number one suggestion is to talk to your doctor. Here is what I suggest to get you over the worst part of the withdrawals. The following treatment will help you not go through such agony as you withdraw from the medication. To help with the withdrawals take hot bathes with 2c. of dissolved Epsom salts and soak for 30 minutes. The skin is the biggest organ of elimination and this will help pull out the drugs. Use a loofa to clean the pores and this will help pull the drugs out even faster. Drink lots of water and 2c. a day of fresh carrot juice, to flush the medicine out of your liver. You can take 500mg of calcium and magnesium twice a day to help you relax. Drink chamomile tea throughout the day and evening to help you stay relaxed. Use a powdered fiber supplement twice daily to pull the drugs out of your intestines where they can store. Two of the questionnaires in this forum did follow this program to withdraw from drugs and it did help. I've enclosed a link where you can read their response to this program. If you have any further questions please let me know, Bille77"

skylark455st2 replied: "PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE. Tell your doctors, they need to know, and any drug use during pregnancy can harm the baby. They will be able to help you with your addiction and monitor your baby for stress and withdrawl. If you're addicted, your baby may be addicted. When my youngest was born, the cord was wrapped around his neck, the doctor caught it, and he didn't strangle himself during delivery but I didn't get to hold my baby, he was blue and they took him away to give him oxygen. Thanks to my OB and the nursing staff my son is a healthy and happy 9 year old. I can't tell you how scared I was when they didn't give me my baby right away, I can't imaging having to go through something like that KNOWING that I kept important information from my doctors. For your sake and the sake of your child start getting help now."

aprilbabe replied: "PLEASE FOR YOUR SAKE AND YOUR BABY'S SAKE GO TELL YOUR DOCTORS. Get an advocate! Get an addiction counsellor's help! Get well soon!"
