skunk pie replied: "Yes, it should be okay. If your Lexapro already makes you jittery, it's probably not a good idea though. If you do find your more sensitive to caffiene while taking Lexapro, drink decaf."

Would it be okay if I had a Bailey's and coffee while we are playing? i took the lexapro at around noon and it is now 5:30.

I stay tired b/c of depression meds and now even coffee doesn't work? My doc has changed me from one depression med to another. But none of them are working. The 1st one made me yawn a lot (Lexapro) but I slept very well and wasn't too lazy just yawned a lot. so she changed me to Paxil which didn't work at all. Now I'm back on Lexapro where I get dreams every night, I don't yawn but I am always tired a lot and want to sleep a lot. I drink coffee in the morning but it doesn't help at all like it used to. What do I do? I am tired of going from one med to another. Please help!

brother_grymn_va replied: "Vitamin B12 may help. Usually comes in a sublingual tablet (let it dissolve under your tongue). It's cheap and can be found in any vitamin store or major retailers (Walmart). Ginseng also gives energy. If you can put aside the time, a daily workout routine would help as well. It doesn't have to be anything major; (short jog/walk. Bicycle. Weights, etc) You should really avoid sugars and caffeine. You get an initial surge from them, but end up crashing eventually. When this happens you're energy level drops below where it initially began."

yvetta2203 replied: "Tell your doctor and perhaps (even though you don't truly wish to) try another med."

IamthatIam replied: "Try Yoga, meditation, other alternative systems. About 3 years ago, I came across something called Pranic Healing (www.pranichealing.org), it works extremely well with depression. You can follow links on the site to locate and speak to a healer close to you. I found it extremely helpful in dealing with my condition at that time (it involved extreme stress, I was chain-smoking, on the verge of alcoholism, tried medication), and then learnt it and have been able to help some people with their depressive conditions. It integrates Yoga, mediation, breathing exercises, and an entire energy healing methodology that's somewhat like Reiki. No mysticism, superstition or blind belief is involved, its pretty much "scientific" in its approach. That was helpful, since I'm very much a technology person. Medication doesn't really work, and has so many unpleasant side effects. The entire conventional medical system, it seems, doesn't have much to offer. But it does help somewhat - you should use it to get short term cover while you get to speed on Yoga or meditation or Pranic Healing. If you stay depressed then its hard to work up the motivation to learn something new or stay with it long enough for the benefits to show up. I'm not sure if the rules of this site allow members to contact each other, if they do then I'd be happy to help out any way I can. I can give you a couple of distant healings, and you can see if they help."

Lilith replied: "I'm dealing with a similar situation. Try ruling out other biological factors for your excessive sleepiness. Have your GP check for anemia (low iron), blood sugar levels (diabetes), and your thyroid. It may not be JUST depression that's making you so tired. I'm trying to figure out the same thing."

catherine h replied: "go to. read it, do what it says. and get off the medication. maybe you don't need it."

Just started Lexapro..When am I going to feel NOT EXHAUSTED? This is my 5th day on 5mg of Lexapro, and I am supposed to go up to 10 mg in one more week, i am so tired i can barely function at work! I am on my 4th cup of coffee also. Any relief here?? This will go away..i hope??

I_Hate_Stupidity replied: "It takes a while. After about 4 months on it, that's when the tiredness started for me - I ultimately stopped taking it because I couldn't function."

mmboudreaux replied: "You need to consult your dr. i took lexapro and it takes a week to start the real effects it make me tired but after a week i was fine your body has to adjust to the change"

peterbilt197 replied: "Take your Lexapro at bedtime. It will still work for you during the day, and you will still benefit from it. I had the same problem. Once I started taking it at bedtime, I felt normal again after a few days. Good luck"

Cat S replied: "About 4-6 weeks I'm guessing. if you have to, harness the power of caffeine but also manage your time as effectively possible, leaving plenty of time to do things and schedule rest periods too. If it persists and is really making life hell, try to get some time off work on medical grounds and talk to your doc about how the med is interfering. He may have good solutions on how to up your dosage wit the least interference to your life. You need to look after yourself right now with good sleep, rest, exercise and a proper diet."

How to have more energy when depressed? For the past 18 months or so I have had low energy levels. I began to not enjoy doing activities that I did earlier in my life so I saw my doctor who put me on Lexapro as an anti-depressant. Both my sister and my mother have been on anti's before. My sister is still currently taking them and has been for five years or so. I have been on Lexapro to try and "level" out my mental status and to try and erase my super "highs" and "lows". It has been helping some lately, but I have no energy. I am a highschool soccer player that plays on the varsity level so physical activites can't be the problem here. I also eat right, don't drink sodas (normally not coffee), and drink lots and lots of water. Even after eight hours of sleep I feel horrible as if I can't do anything much less want to get out of bed. Does anyone have any suggestions to what I can do to get more energy? Is this more mentally related or physically? I want to do activities, but my body, either brain or physical says no. I currently take a multi-vitamin just a simple one like Centrum performance.. Nothing herbal. I also don't eat much dairy as it is I mean cheese on a hamburger once a week... I don't drink milk anymore. Thanks for all the great answers so far.. Could it be more hormone than anything b/c I'm still developing? My doc has told me that, but I feel like my hormones could not have been this severe for 18+/- months? Also, if Lexapro is mild should I be started on a stronger one? Im only on 10mg or 20 I believe. I have taken 15 or so depression tests online an ALL of them categorized me as severe depression or 75/100 (100 being severely depressed, 0 being a happy person). However, my doc does not think I am that bad because my depression has built up my entire life from my father, but I've had five or six life changing events happen to me over the past 18 months. Sorry for another detail add, but I couldn't type it all in the main body. My doc also said that my low energy levels may be because of my anxiety and ocd even though their not severe enough for medication. She related it to my body working in "overhaul" so even with eight hours of sleep I only have half as much energy b/c of the double I'm doing during the day time.

sharrona replied: "I think you sort of answered your own question = =you are a highschooler, teens, hormones, growing, etc. have a lot to do with your metabolism and energy levels. Check with your doctor, but, a series of blood work, can't hurt either. This probably has nothing to do, (at this time) with your history. **I have read all your additions, have you considered a holistic doctor? I don't know much about them, but if you were my child at your age, I would not stop at -one-doctor... I never did. keep searching, you will get an answer, I still believe in the growth age thing, but you need to get your own answers. take care."

Amber W replied: "This may sound crazy, but drop dairy. Yep. Drop dairy. I recently did, and I was already a healthy eater and exerciser, and I used to have major lows and feel apathetic and low energy alot, but after a little while off dairy (milk, cheese, ice cream, etc.), I have not felt that low energy ONCE. not once! I also dropped meat, but I think it's the diary that did the trick. I know it sounds major, but there are dairy substitutes and everything...it's not as hard as it seems. You can research it more online if you are interested. (-="

Is there anything I can take or do? I take 300 mg of Wellbrutin and 20 mg of Lexapro for GAD. The medication does help because I'm not a nervous reck anymore. However, I am so tired, by 5:00 -6:00 I am out of steam. Besides Red Bull and coffee is there anything I can try or do to help?

ElizabethMichele replied: "Give it some time, when I first started on Lexapro, I had zero energy for about 2 months and then it slowly started to go away. If it's been a while, I'd talk to your Dr about your side effects, she may be able to lower your dosage or switch your meds so it's not as bad."

lunahealer replied: "Try to drink Yerba Mate tea 3 times a day it will help you a lot, and no side effects, lunahealer"

I take lexapro and now suffer from somnolence (I'll explain inside).. What can I do? Okay so it's that feeling you get when you just nod off to sleep and suddenly you're woken up by the phone or something. You know that fatigue in your shoulders and fingers and well everywhere.. Here's a better explanation.. Coffee, getting more sleep, being active, eating well... none of it works! Do you reckon I should ask to change meds or be thankful that it's not a serious side effect.. PS I have a little baby so it's getting difficult.

reaganite27 replied: "The fact that you're dozing off may or may not be of great concern. Is it problematic? Is it putting yourself or child at risk? Could it cause a harmful accident -- in the car, at home, or elsewhere? This side effect is typical with SSRI medications. Ultimately, do the benefits of the medication offset the side effects? You may find with time -- weeks or months -- that your brain will acclimate to the medication and you'll find yourself dozing off less often."

vivian replied: "Just be thankful it's not a serious side effect. Alot of people have worse side effects. Of course if you think its impairing with your day to day life maybe you should take some vitamins. Bosst up on vitamin c."

pinkhelokte2003 replied: "I myself take Lexapro and I get the same somnolence feeling as you...but its not a daily thing for me. For me it usually happens at night when I am just drifting off to sleep and I all of a sudden get the urge that I am slipping on a freshly mopped floor (weird I know). If this is the first depression med you have been on then maybe you should ask for a different prescript as maybe this one isnt for you, especially if its interferring with your daily activities. ~Hope this helps"

shaneris5 replied: "www.drugs.com SIDE EFFECTS: More common: ***sleeplessness; trouble sleeping; unable to sleep; sleepiness or unusual drowsiness*** See on Lexapro. Ask yourself: "Why do I feel depressed, and when did I first start to feel this way: can I associate this with any recent change in my life?" (if so, it is probably reactive [situational] depression: counselling, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy may be indicated, but most of life's adverse situations are resolved within 16 weeks, yet the medical criteria for depression, and the prescription of antidepressants is only 2 weeks!). Or, was it a more gradual thing, with no apparent cause? (a nutritional deficiency, hypothyroidism, environmental toxicity, or reactions to some medications, etc., becomes more likely as the cause). Antidepressants work quicker than the following; 2 - 6 weeks, but you may have to adjust dosage, or types. St. John's wort helps most people; tolerance doesn't develop, and the few side effects don't occur often, and even then are normally not severe (neither should be relied on as a sole treatment). It doesn't cause sleeping problems, or weight change, but usually takes at least 2, and generally 4 - 6 weeks to become effective, but can work quicker than antidepressants, sometimes. A recent, independent German double blind study showed it to be as effective as a commonly prescribed antidepressant, in cases of major depression, with far fewer side effects, and those were generally better tolerated, with a lower rate of discontinuation. Unlike antidepressants, where sexual dysfunction is a common side effect, it happens much more rarely with St. John's wort (I have noticed no effect in this area). A multidimensional approach to treating depression without medication follows. All except for no. (7.) are safe to use with medication, but not St. John's wort, because of interactions, and it's sensible to check out anything else first with your doctor. (1.) Take 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, daily: (certified free of mercury) it is best if consumed with an antioxidant, such as an orange, or grapefruit, or their FRESHLY SQUEEZED juice. If vitamin E is added, it should be certified as being 100% from natural sources, or it may be synthetic: avoid it. In the winter months, if not getting sufficient daily exposure to strong light, see SEARCHBAR: enter: "vitamin D3", & Go to a doctor and ask for a 25(OH)D, also called 25-hydroxyvitamin D, blood test. When you get the results, don’t follow the typical “normal” reference range, as these are too low. The OPTIMAL value that you’re looking for is 45-52 ng/ml (115-128 nmol/l)". The company which tests your levels has to be one of those using the correct form of test, and this topic is addressed via the searchbar at mercola.com - "vitamin D3; testing". Also take a vitamin B complex which is certified as being 100% of natural origin; a deficiency in vitamin B9 (folic acid, or folate) is known to cause depression. Around 30% - 40% of depressed people have low vitamin B12 levels. Depressed females using the contraceptive pill may benefit from vitamin B6 supplements. (2.) Work up slowly to at least 20 minutes minutes of exercise, daily, or 30 - 60 mns, 5 times weekly. Too much exercise can cause stress, which isn't wanted when dealing with depression. (3.) Occupational therapy (keeping busy allows little time for unproductive introspection, and keeps mental activity out of less desirable areas of the brain). (4.) Use daily, a relaxation method* and/or yoga*, and/or Tai Chi*.(5.) Initially, at least, some form of psychotherapy or counselling; later, perhaps either Cognitive Behavio(u)ral Therapy, or Rational Emotive Behavio(u)ral Therapy for, say, 6 months. (6.) Maintain a mood chart, and daily activities schedule**. (7.) As options, if desired, either a known, effective herbal remedy, such as St. John's wort, (get a German variety, if possible; local ones may vary in effectiveness. Perika, and Kira brands have been recommended as being effective. Take with a meal) or supplements, such as SAMe, or Inositol (from vitamin and health food stores, some supermarkets, or mail order: view section 55)."

Who's taken Lexapro? Just started 1 tab of 10mg a day as directed by my physician. Taking it for depression and stress as the last couple of months have been really making me a mess. After four weeks I'm supposed to talk it over with the doc about continuing it. Hope I won't have to as I've heard that it afftects the libido, erection, etcetera. Will begin working out and taking more care of myself i.e. running, jump rope, stop drinking alcohol, eating fatty foods, the coffee thing, and all that. Just don't want this stuff to affect my sex life. Who's used this and how did it go? Serious only please. Thanks.

Diane S replied: "My husband and I both take Lexapro, have been for a while. No problems in the bedroom ;) I read it needs to build up in your system, I think 4-6 weeks before it's fully effective."

sparkof_madness replied: "I've been on it for a few weeks now. My sex drive has gone down to zero. I have no interest in it at all and when I am it takes forever to orgasm. I'm hoping it subsides like some of the other side effects have."

pma replied: "I've been taking 10mg for about 4 weeks now. It has been pretty good mellowing me. I really like that part of it. I start 20 mg today. As far as the libido I am a women so I don't know how it will effect a man. It is much harder to achieve orgasms but not impossible. I have a lot of stress and anxiety in my life right now so I am hoping it works. So far it has taken the edge off. Hope it goes ok for you."

Glennroid replied: "I'm taking 10 mg. a day now for about 3 weeks. It has decreased my libido some, but not totally. It's also made it a little harder to achieve orgasm, but not impossible. I too don't like this side effect, but it's much, much better than being as miserable as I was. I've taken other antidepressants in the past, but not for several years. I'm feeling much more comfortable in my skin now. In a much more positive mood and generally feeling a lot better than I have in several months. I don't have any problems in my life, in fact things are very good. I'm just subject to occasional depression. So far, I'm quite pleased with the results. Give it a good 2-3 months. SSRI's take that long to be fully effective. If at the end of that time, your symptoms haven't improved enough and your side effects are still bothering you, talk to your doctor and try something else. There are so many of these drugs and they're so new that it's impossible to tell how they'll work on anyone unless you give them a good try. We're all guinea-pigs in this unfortunately. Most of the time the side effects subside over time as you adjust to the medication. It's much better to feel good and have a slightly lower libido."

kitrell replied: "i took it....didnt work. white colored pills usually dont work."

red4tribe replied: "I took it and it didn't help me at all. I was off it after about 2 months. I had a bunch of side effects and it didn't help me with my situation."
