Will Protonix prevent me from absorbing other meds? I am taking Protonix for ulcers, I have just started taking Chantix to stop smoking. Will the Protonix prevent me from absorbing the Chantix? I have found a pproblem taking it with other medications and just don't know if it will work for the smoking cessation.

Alias Smith & Jones replied: "Your pharmacist should know the answer, and if there is a problem, your pharmacist should have been on his toes, so you'd better check with him."

jess91485 replied: "any meds that are made to help absorb acids or help with stomach conditions absorb other meds taken within 2 hours of one another. Be careful with protonix, I was on it for ulcers as well, it worked great for a few months, then they increased my dosage, now it has an opposite effect on me, it causes severe abd pain. Just thought I'd let you know. Hope you have better luck!"

Ruth replied: "Protonix will ease the stomach lining that is irritated from the ulcers. Protonix is only recommended for short term use. Since Chantix is relatively new, there may or may not be any interaction (s). I would ask the Doc that prescribed the medicine or even ask your Pharmacist. But, more than likely, it shouldn't cause a reduction in it's effect ( Chantix). Take the Protonix as directed and then wait an hour or two before taking the Chantix. Your stomach lining needs to heal, not become further irritated. I hope this helps and Good Luck with kicking the habit."

dremadagwa replied: "the active ingredient of protinox belong to a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitor a very strong one although so yet protinox have the least interaction ant up till now there is no reported cases of interaction but for chantix the only drug interaction is drug thin er it is not suitable for pregnant or lactating or renal disease the drug drug interaction is not fully documented as it is still new drug it is also alter some drug pharmacodynamic so may affect drug metabolism and bio availability it may cause nausea and vomiting diarrhea or constipation for more info go for hope it could help"

what can I do to feel better with an ulcer? I throw up every morning -- usually dry heaves, my stomach hurts all but about 3 hours a day. The doctor thinks it's an ulcer and I have a scope scheduled in a month, I already had a colonoscopy and an unltrasound but meanwhile I don't feel like job hunting and I have to. He put me on protonix but it doesn't seem to be helping.

Lacie replied: "Gargle with warm salt water."

peanut replied: "Eat bland food, avoid alcohol and call the doctor about the medication."

PJ replied: "If you have an ulcer - you need antibiotics. Ulcers are caused by the H. pilori bacteria. Good luck with your scope - I hope they figure out what is wrong with you."

valerina replied: "it sounds kind of gross, but go to a health food store and get aloe. not the jelly stuff you put on your body, there is a drink. make sure it is almost 100% aloe, with very little additives. it tastes like hose water lol it coats and soothes your stomach almost instantly. good luck!"

Jodie75 replied: "Try asking for Pariet or Prevacid. They will greatly reduce the acid in your stomach. You might also ask him for an antibiotic to go on while you wait to have the scope. If it is an ulcer, the antibiotic may help heal your stomach."

fairyglitter478 replied: "The most important thing to avoid is oversecretion of gastric contents in the GI tract. Eat 3 meals a day, avoid or reduce stress and caffeine containing foods/drinks, and NO MILK or CREAM. If you smoke...STOP. There are so many types of medications out there you could take by prescription such as antacids, histamine receptor antagonist, anticholinergics, cytoprotective agents, and proton pump inhibitors (which you are on). If you are in pain, DO NOT take Aspirin, Ibuprofen, or any form of NSAID (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug). Those could result in more bleeding from the ulcer, causing more pain. Also, did he diagnose you with a duodenal ulcer or gastric ulcer? Duodenal ulcer: pain occurs 2-3 hours after meals, nighttime, or in early sleeping hours. Eating food helps relieve the pain. Gastric ulcer: pain occurs 1 hour after eating or when not eating at all. Vomiting helps relieve the pain, whereas eating food does not. Hope this helps you!"

Can i drink a little coffee if i have an ulcer? i have an ulcer and i rarely drink coffee however i am taking the SAT this saturday and i really need a cup of coffee during the sat so i don't fall asleep if i drink one cup of coffee, with maybe some rolaids will i still have bad stomach pains that will make the energy boost from the coffee not worth it? or is drinking coffee just bad in general for ulcers and i'll be fine? note: i'm currently on protonix or what about strong tea instead of coffee?

Candy J replied: "Hi, It is a beverage derived from brewed Coffee beans. Through various manufacturing processes the coffee is dehydrated into the form of powder or granules. These can be rehydrated with hot water to provide a drink similar (though not identical) to conventional coffee. At least one brand of instant coffee is also available in concentrated liquid form."

Cheaper substitute for Protonix? I was prescribed Protonix for an ulcer, but I do not have insurance (yes I am working on getting it) and I can't afford it - a month's worth is over $400! Is there anything else I could ask to be prescribed that will work similarly but cost less? Please don't suggest OTC antacids like Tums or whatever because they will make it worse. Yes, obviously I am going to talk to my doctor about it, just trying to get some info on my own.

do you know me? replied: "There's nexium thats cheaper and I know there are others but I cant think of it off the top of my head Prilosec is over the counter and is really almost the same thing they are all PPI's (proton pump inhibitors) that stop some of your pumps from producing acid. That might work but theres no generic for Protonix, sorry. However from personal refrence it did not work for me either. And if u have an ulcer it seems you should be described an antibiotic to kill it then something to heal it (prtonix) but prilosec would cover this ground. Did u get an antibiotic???I'd get a second opinion, sounds fishy to me. YOu could tr controlling your diet through elimination of certain foods (fried foods, chocolate, caffeine, red meats, beans, lentils etc) thsi worked well for me and the prilosec. Or one enemy that you would never suspect is processed sugar (white sugar, corn syrup, anything ending in the three letters ose). That really helped me!!! Good Luck"

MY INSURANCE WONT COVER PROTONIX IS THERE SOMETHING GENERIC LIKE IT I CAN TAKE LESS EXPENSIVE? I NEED PROTONIX FOR A POSSIBLE BLEEDING ULCER MY INSURANCE STATES I CANNOT HAVE IT OR I HAVE TO AUTHORIZE IT MYSELF AND IF IT IS COVERED I WOULD PAY ABOUT 65 A MONTH WHICH IS SILLY, ANY SUGGESTIONS ON ANOTHER MED?

David B replied: "Protonix is a proton pump inhibitor. I think all PPI's are prescription. There might be generic meds that do basically the same thing. Talk to the pharmacist."

Forgot to take protonix, fever and abdominal pain? i'm on protonix for my ulcer, which by the way has not helped at all, and i forgot to take it this morning Lo and behold i now have a high fever and terrible cramps in my abdomen i understand maybe there's too much acid and i'll get stomach pain but fever? no i don't really feel better while taking it apparently i just feel much worse when not taking it, which suggests that my overall condition is not improving

maca replied: "take your medication now then delay your next one by a few hours tomorrow, just goes to show it must be working?"

Protonix side effects? ok so heres the deal, i had been having bad stomach pains and burning every morning over the summer so 2 weeks ago my doc put me on protonix, assuming it was an ulcer from college stress. After 2 weeks of taking Protonix, my pains and nausea were lasting through the entire day instead of just in the morning! it seemed to me that the protonix was making the sickness far worse. One evening I actually slept in the bathroom , because of the pain in my upper stomach and vomiting. I ended up at the ER last sunday, for fear that I had something seriously wrong but they couldnt find anything and ended up sending me home w 2 prescriptions for bentyl and reglan. I have recently stopped taking my protonix and have been feeling a little better than before. Has anyone else experienced bad side effects from protonix? or know if it could have been the cause of my illness? im running out of ideas. thank you.

Allison112 replied: "My boyfriend takes Protonix for heart burn and acid reflux. It helped him almost instantly and has had only good results so far. It sounds like you have something more severe than heart burn. Unfortunately, what you need is Dr. House. Best of luck. Try drinking more water."

Kristi H replied: "nausea, vomiting, gas, stomach pain, diarrhea, or headache. are the most common protonix side effects"

Suffering with an ulcer... need experienced person to help...? Let me back up.... I was diagnosed with an ulcer but haven't had any procedure to validate that diagnosis. The pain isn't a burning pain; it's just hardcore pain in my stomach. Is this the same pain as anyone out there has experienced with an ulcer? My doc prescribed Protonix. I've been taking it for 2+ months and have had great relief. However, I accidentally missed 2 doses as I didn't get it refilled in time. Within 2 days, I was in misery and although I've been taking it again for a week, I'm still having pain. Shouldn't a person be on a special antibiotic to help heal an ulcer? I really don't want to be on Protonix forever. Should I ask for an endoscopy to confirm that it is an ulcer and not something else? Will my ulcer (if that's the problem) ever heal with Protonix alone???

Meli replied: "Well, the next step would be to confirm by endoscopy, and maybe a h.pylori test, since if this is positive, you need a regimen involving antibiotics and proton-pump inhibitor or antacids.. your meds will just control the HCl in your stomach that will irritate the gastric linings, and yup it really needs long term treatment... But you should also avoid foods/vices that cause hyperacidity... like alcohol, smoking, skipping meals, carbonated drinks, caffeine."

Sci Guy replied: "Get an endoscopy. The procedure is very pleasant and pain free, aside from the IV line which isn't bad anyways. I have that same pain in my stomach as well, and Nexium seems to work while Prilosec doesn't. If this is the only drug you've tried, try some others. And the same drugs don't work for everybody."

Bleeding Ulcer. I had a gastric bypass surgery in April and a month later I woke up in the middle of the night? and I had something rise in my throat and before I could\d spit it out it went back down. I was nauseated so I went to the bathroom and I threw up. It was kind of pinkish red and my son called 911. By the time they got here I had extremely severe diarrhea. By the time I reached the E.R., I was going to the bathroom every few minutes. My diarrhea turned into pure blood and blood clots and the Doctor ran some tests and said I had a bleeding ulcer. I was admitted to the hospital for 6 days and I needed 2 pints of blood. I swear I am sticking to my diet, I "puree" my food in my mouth and I have been doing everything I should be doing. My surgeon said 2% of the people who have Gastric bypass get ulcers. I am on Protonix and Carafate. I am also taking liquid Codeine. It hurts when I eat anything and I was told it would take 3 months to heal. What is your input and do you have any suggestions?I have lost 48 lbs since the surgery. Do you know of anyone who has bleeding ulcers? Is it dangerous? Im afraid I will bleed again. I might mention my ulcer is in my stomach which only holds 2 ounces of food.

ndcase07 replied: "I had the bypass too on may 6th. It is very rare that some does get ulcers, Do you drink a lot or tea, or coffee or soda? Caffeine causes ulcers. Also it could be from healing as well. A recurrence is less than 1% if you keep taking your medication."

How long does it take for acid reducers to start working? I have been taking Protonix for about a week for an ulcer. These past two days I have gotten heartburn pretty bad, after eating food that is not a normal heartburn inducer...?? How long should it take to start working?

mississippi_gal_10 replied: "3-4 days. It should have started helping by now. You probably need an antibiotic along with the Protonix."

Anonymous replied: "Call your doctor you may need something stronger"

valgal115 replied: "a couple of weeks"

saintly sinner replied: "it should've started working by now. maybe u need something stronger."

Rea replied: "Contact your doctor. I find that if I eat small amounts of food several times during the day I get less heartburn. Also, don't eat and lay down! I'm on Nexium and it has help be a lot. Still have problems if I don't follow my diet. Take care."

Britt E replied: "I would give it a few more days. I take Protonix and if I remember correctly it took at least a week. I would like to also suggest going to the chiropractor. I suffered with heartburn for 1 1/2 years and the Protonix and other drugs weren't working. They ran 5 different tests to see why I was having so much trouble ( heartburn 24/7 ) I went to the chiropractor for an adjustment and no longer have heartburn!"

Pullay replied: "short few days."
