What should I do if I take trazadone to sleep, and when I don't have it I can't sleep a wink? I take prozac during the day, and it keeps me from taking naps

4TH DOWN replied: "Try restavit. You can get it over the counter at the chemist/drugstore, but its very strong. Good if you REALLY need some sleep"

mary replied: "It's quite the usual thing, that if you are used to taking any kind of sleep medication, then dont take it, you get a sort of rebound insomnia, which makes sleeping very difficult for a few weeks. Try taking a warm bath, drinking hot milk and just reading if sleep wont come. Getting upset will make it impossible, so just relax."

king of the a-town replied: "its normal to become reliant on sleep medication but if stop taking it as often u shuld be able to sleep without it"

circle_of_life replied: "First i'd like to know why your running out since Trazdone is a prescription medication. Sounds like your maybe taking more than prescribed to you at night which can be easy to do i guess if you have a fear of not getting your sleep but, you then run the chance of not having it at all some nights just like what's happening to you now. My suggestion would not be to try to find something else out there to help you sleep since Trazdone probably works better than most drugs but instead, i would simply ask my doctor to up my prescription for those nights when the dosage your taking is not enough to do the job. In the meantime, Tylenol PM or, Vicks Nyquil works very well for a short period of days but, i wouldn't suggest you use it very often since your body will build up a tolerance for it pretty quickly and be sure not to combine the Trazdone"

I started taking Trazadone and I am still awake all night - what should I do? The doctor wants me to try it for 2 weeks. But I am still awake all night. She said I could take the Prozac with the Trazadone (50mg) both at night if I was still having trouble sleeping. And although the trazadone does not make me sleep it does give me dry mouth and an upset stomach.

Gastounet replied: "You follow carefully your doctor's prescription dear and you do not seek alternative advice from unknown people on the internet about your health and treatment."

knightsluckylady replied: "I agree that you should always follow your doctors orders and check with them before adding any OTC medicines. But as someone who has suffered with insomnia for over 25 years I highly recommend asking your doctor about natural alternatives. I personally take melatonin as often as I can remember to. I have trouble remembering to take medicines. lol Thank God I am not ill with something that requires me to take anything regularly! Best of luck! Oh! And the worst thing you can do is stress over sleep. Sounds silly, but true. If you stress over not sleeping it only makes it worse. Don't let yourself or anyone else make you feel guilty for catching a bit of sleep whenever your body finally lets you!!"

Lindsey replied: "How do you not know she has a shitty doctor? I had a shitty doctor. If you don't like the medicine stop taking it! I did and I think I got better when I actually got off all the pills they said that I "needed." They just want to make money off you they are all working together in capitalism to make everybody think they are crazy ... haha maybe not quite but I do think my doctor just wanted the money. Who knows... Maybe people do just do things for money... And hell if someone walks in your office convinved they need help and you just push them enough they will fall into it and be even more convinvced and you can take their money! Everything is about money these days? Oh and this is where someone says they are a certified professionalist and they are not there to make money. Lol really? That's why people become doctors and lawyers, they want to "help" people. If you do have serious problems well I still do a bit it's better to deal with it without medications. I personally think medications are poison. Think about it your nausous and vomit... Isn't that your body rejecting it? They tell you they are just "side effects" keeps taking it. Supposedly your mind is better but at what costs. Do you really know what's happening in your body from those little pills?? I personally think those pills fucked me up more in the head. I will admit I had problems but it would of been more helpful for me as a child through my teenage years if I would of had counseling not a guy handing me medicine and everyone pretending things are okay now."

Kimchi replied: ""Trazodone is often used in conjunction with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, like fluoxetine (Prozac) and has been noted to help with the anxiety that can result from beginning treatment with an SSRI anti-depressant. " - Wikipedia. So really its not a sleep aid, its more to help with anxiety and depression. How long have you been taking this combo with the Prozac? Bear in mind it can take a while to kick in, and its probably a symptom of the depression that is causing the sleep problems... (I say probably, sometimes meds can also cause this) Certainly, it would be good to raise this problem with your doctor next time you see them, but I'd keep taking the meds, give them time to work... true they may not end up working and you may have to try something else, but that would be best for the doctors to decide, IMO. In the meantime you could always try taking something along the lines of a herbal sleep preparation with Valerian in (if you take that, consistently take it and it will get a chance to work, it doesn't seem to work too well as a once off - this was actually recommended to me by my doctor!) I'm not sure of its efficacy in unipolar depressive sleep disturbance (I'm assuming here, sorry if I get it wrong), as I get the opposite problem of sleeping too much when depressed, and I take it at other times when I am having problems sleeping. Try to get to bed at a consistent time, and don't take daytime naps. You could also try the old remedy of a hot cup of milk before bed. Try not to lie awake thinking of problems (I know, easy to say hard to do). Every bit helps, but I would also understand if none of that stuff works at the moment, as its the chemical imbalance in your brain that is probably causing it. I know it doesn't help much to say it, but "hang in there" and hopefully your meds will do the right job. I really don't know of your circumstances, whether or not councelling would be better... it might be worth considering if you don't have any joy with the medicinal approach, it just depends on what is causing the depression. Best of luck! (and I meant to say, I feel for you with the side effects, they can really suck!)"

Q.T.π Reuben 2 replied: "I was taking Lexapro with Trazodone and then switched to Pexeva with Trazodone. My psychiatrist told me to take 2 of the Trazodones before bed and if I woke up in the middle of the night I could take another Trazodone. This didn't help much , but when I took 3 Trazodones (150mg total) I would fall asleep within a half hour and would stay asleep most of the night. I was taking the Pexeva in the morning."
