Carol replied: "I use a low dosage. Side effects include memory loss, loss of concentration. Benefits include being able to carry on with your life and live it normally.
It does work to calm your thoughts but takes more than 4-6 weeks before it gets to that point. It might make you sleepy so is best to take it at night."
Billy Hill replied: "Risperdal (risperidone) is a major tranquilizer (like thorazine and haldol) and antipsychotic drug. It can have very serious side effects, like tardive dyskinesia. This is a condition where your muscles can become permanently paralyzed (especially those in the facial region). It can cause uncontrollable tremors and salivation (drooling). It can also cause serious liver problems, and your doctor should give you periodic liver enzyme tests to make sure you're not damaging your liver. Other side effects include Stephens-Johnsons Syndrome, which starts as a rash but can eventually kill you. It can also cause fatigue and weight gain.
I can't believe a doctor would give you this drug for anxiety, as it is not a first-line therapy in almost any disease these days! It is usually used in schizophrenics to stop delusions and hallucinations. There are much safer and more effective drugs out there. Fluoxetine (Prozac) sertraline (Zoloft), or escitalopram (Celexa) would be much better at treating OCD and have a much safer side-effect profile, in my opinion. They're also a little bit older and much less expensive than some of the newer SSRI's and SSNRI's.
As for anxiety, those three drugs I just listed would help, but you could also try buspirone (Buspar), which is a much safer drug for anxiety with a very low abuse liability. Other drugs to treat anxiety are the benzodiazepines like clonazepam (Klonopin), alprazolam (Xanax), diazepam (Valium), or clorazepate (Tranxene). These four are all schedule IV drugs, which means they do have some potential for abuse and addiction.
So, in closing, Risperdal should work very quickly in calming your thoughts, but you should talk to your pharmacist and doctor to see if there is something safer you can take."
Is it okay to take benadryl 18 hours after the last dose of risperdal .25mg? can i get anticholinergic intoxication from doing that??
9Suns replied: "MONITOR: Centrally-acting anticholinergic agents may antagonize the therapeutic effects of neuroleptic agents. Although these drugs have been used together clinically, the possibility of increased risk of adverse effects such as central nervous system depression and tardive dyskinesia should also be considered. In addition, excessive anticholinergic effects may occur in combination use, which can result in paralytic ileus, hyperthermia, heat stroke, and the anticholinergic intoxication syndrome. Peripheral symptoms of anticholinergic intoxication commonly include mydriasis, blurred vision, flushed face, fever, dry skin and mucous membranes, tachycardia, urinary retention, and constipation. Central symptoms may include memory loss, disorientation, incoherence, hallucinations, psychosis, delirium, hyperactivity, twitching or jerking movements, stereotypy, and seizures. In hot weather, the risk of hyperthermia and heat stroke should be considered, as neuroleptic agents can interfere with temperature regulation in the hypothalamus while anticholinergic agents tend to inhibit peripheral sweating mechanisms.
MANAGEMENT: Caution is advised if anticholinergic agents are used with neuroleptic agents, particularly in the elderly and those with underlying organic brain disease, who tend to be more sensitive to the central anticholinergic effects of these drugs and in whom toxicity symptoms may be easily overlooked. Prophylactic administration of anticholinergic agents is sometimes given clinically during neuroleptic therapy for drug-induced parkinsonism or extrapyramidal symptoms but may not always be appropriate. Patients prescribed this combination should be advised to notify their physician promptly if they experience potential symptoms of anticholinergic intoxication such as abdominal pain, fever, heat intolerance, blurred vision, confusion, and hallucinations. Ambulatory patients should be counseled to avoid activities requiring mental alertness until they know how these agents affect them. A dosage reduction in one or both drugs may be necessary if excessive adverse effects develop. During hot weather, patients should avoid prolonged sun exposure and intense physical exertion and maintain adequate fluid intake.
You asked almost the same question a while back, but you said 24 hours, which I would say would be OK, but now you say 18 hours, so I would NOT take the benadryl 18 hours after the risperdal.
IF you are still unsure about your question, I would call up your MD and ask him to clarify."
going off risperdal dose make you the same person before the illness? now im going off risperdal by doctor
Jeht replied: "Depends on dosage and length of time taking it. But I would trust your Doc and if you start feeling or acting funny you can always go back on.."
om replied: "That is something you would probably want to ask your doctor, since results may vary."
optimaxim replied: "I would suspect no long term changes in your personality through the use of almost any drug but I don't know anything about risperdal. But you have to play with what you are dealt. Whether on a drug or not you are still a human being with all the pleasures and problems that that entails. Accept necessary or recommended changes and live with the consequences. Accept who you are with or without handicaps and move on. Get on with your life whatever the circumstances. Good luck."
What is Risperdal for when given in small doses and should it make you very sleepy? My fiance is taking .5 mg twice a day. He has only been taking it for 3 days but is very tired and disoreinted. He is not schizo or bipolar- but he is suicidal and has a lot of rage.
Hans Christian J replied: "It's very simple its antidepressant."
thedrisin replied: "Risperdal (or Risperidone) is an anti-psychotic medication that is given to individuals to assist with psychotic symptoms, as well as with aggression, suicidality, and significant hyperactivity. Your fiance should call his doctor if his side effects do not improve. His doctor will have more information about why he or she prescribed this, and should have also discussed potential side effects and what to do about them. You might also try looking up Risperdal on WebMD or Yahoo Health for other basic information. It can make people tired. Have your fiance keep a log of his symptoms and to rate them on a scale of 1 to 10."
conundrum replied: "J&J had already made an announcement warning Canadian doctors and patients of the Risperdal stroke risks in October 2002, and included in the warning J&J cited 37 reports of Risperdal stroke or Risperdal stroke-like events, including 16 deaths.? Advocacy groups wonder why unnecessary risk is being taken when prescribing Risperdal to patients for reasons other than for psychotic disorders.?

Some Risperdal patients may want to consider alternate treatment methods due to the evidence of increased risk and lack of adequate safety studies.? The use of Risperdal with pregnant women has not yet been determined safe.? It has been reported that some mothers that used Risperdal while pregnant had babies with problematic births.?One mother using Risperdal had a baby with serious brain problems and it is unknown if Risperdal may have contributed to the birth defect.?
Risperdal studies on animals have indicated that undesirable effects could occur, though experts are still unsure of what effect Risperdal has with pregnant women.? It has been shown that Risperdal can pass through the milk of nursing animals, and so women that are still breast-feeding should discuss alternate treatment methods to Risperdal to be safe.?
There have only been studies showing the safety of Risperdal in adults, so children may risk very serious side effects.? The use of antipsychotic medications for children has continued to be a controversial subject over the years and the growing trend of prescribing new and powerful drugs like Risperdal to children has especially high risk considering the risk that the risperdal side effects could last forever.?"
Does seroquel have less side effects than risperdal? My son who has Asberger/Autism has been on Risperdal for 4 years to control temper tantrums and irritability. He is 16. His MD wants to switch him to Seroquel because he says it does not cause weight gain as much as Risperdal does. My son has been doing very well on Risperdal, it really helps calm him. He has gained weight on it although. I have read that Seroquel also causes weight gain. I have started the Seroquel at a low dose but noticed right away that he is more irritable. He is still on the Risperdal, but we are supposed to taper down on it. Risperdal is approved for autism, so I really don't want to switch. It has taken me 8 years to find a combo of drugs that work for my son. Does anyone know if Seroquel is better than Risperdal for controlling autisic irritabiltiy with less weight gain?
Andy replied: "If the risperdal is working, unless there are major problems, I'd stick with using the risperdal instead of switching. But make sure to speak to the doctor first."
lovin_joe_2002 replied: "It really depends on the severity of autism. I have done work with autisic people and they have been on Seroquel or Risperdal, Seroquel has less severe side effects but, agitation, anxiety and insomnia are all side effects. The same side effects are in Risperdal only not as severe."
debbigeri replied: "i have been on both. seroquel is to strong for me it gave me side effects risperdal did no side effects."
Golden Ivy replied: "According to a site I once found and Unfortunately can't find it now said the opposite.
According to my experience Risperdal had less side effects than Seroquel."
su-men-de-4821 replied: "I have been on Seroquel for three years. Personally it has worked for me. I does make me tired, so I take it at night. You didn't mention the dose. I take 400mg. which is a large dose. I did gain weight on it. I was diagnosed with diabetes after taking this drug.. Also, you should know there is a "black box" warning about rising blood sugar. There is also a Class Action Lawsuit in place for people who were diagnosed with diabetes and pancreatic problems who took this drug.. Every drug works differently on each person. You should check out the warnings on it. And discuss this with your doctor."
milk fur♥ replied: "Look online people who have used this drug can help you with answers, Also talk to your doctor, ask how they plan to take your son off the medication, if they plan to just take him off cold turkey instead of easing him off slowly then I suggest see a different doctor and get their advice, taking someone off medication straight away can have bad side affects, you can always ask for others doctors opinions but doctors usually have the best knowledge, review the drug a little online and with the people who have used it.
Goodluck"
does anyone know if you can stop a low dose of risperdal after being on it a month and a half with no problems? also can you just switch from ativan over to xanx with no problem
gotta luv da Li replied: "Work with your doctor. The real issue is return of the symptoms that lead you to being put on it.
Xanax is the strongest benzo. It is relatively short acting, so there is a rebound effect. It also can be more addictive than other benzos. If it was me, I'd try an antidepressant, beta blocker, neurontin, or even klonopin first."
Minniemousie replied: "Dear friend:
This is not a question that the average person can answer. Only your doctor or pharmacist is qualified to answer this question for you.
Some drugs have what is a "rebound" effect if you stop taking them and can do extreme harm. They might cause one to go into a coma, or damage one's nervous system. So, do not rely on responses from we who are not doctors. Contact your doctor or your doctor's nurse. They can give you accurate answers.
Your life is a precious gift! I wish you well."
Mental Survivor replied: "Talk to your psychiastrst, doing it yourself is very dangerous.. Must listen to your psychiastrst, they know the best about the drug."
Health effects of the drug risperdal? Health experts out there, are there positive and negative health effects for prolonged use of the drug risperdal? I take it to level up my moods for bipolar disorder, but I don't report any changes in my body except it's harder to wake up in the morning and easier to go to sleep at night. I'm already on a smaller dose. Should I stop taking it or take a heavier dose? I'm sure there's lots of people that know more than I do.
Brittany replied: "stop taking it that stuff is bad for your health. thats one of the worse drugs out there you can take and eventually itll cause health problems. its bad for your nerves and for your heart"
knicname replied: "Pros: level mood, improved sleep
Side effects: Anxiety; Restlessness; Drowsiness, Blurred Vision; when beginning... increased sensitivity to sunlight; Rash or Redness of skin; Tremors in hands; Movement Disorder; Tics; Decreased Libido or performance; Problems in urination or increased urination.
If you have not had these side effects you probably won't get them...if you do speak to your MD right away.
You need to speak to your MD about your dosage level.
DO NOT change dose without speaking to MD.
DO NO stop without MD's instructions, your symptoms & side effects might get worse if you don't wean off medication.
Some people do have bad side effects like 1st answerer, but if it is helping you & you only have some trouble getting up in AM. It might be right medicine for you.
You might try taking the medicine earlier in the evening (if you take it at night) that way it might be easier to get up in the AM
Google: mayo clinic>>drugs>>Risperdal
Also check
Good luck"
