Is it normail to break out for the first time on tetracycline? i just started my first dose today and my rosacea looks worst..is this normal? does it get worst before it gets better? i also have been taking phentermine..could this be interacting with the tetracycline? Help!! :(

Ruth C replied: "you could be getting hives along with your rosacea. You may be allergic to the tetracycline. See a doctor -- drug allergies can kill you."

CHERYL S3 replied: "tetracycline does make you break out sometimes but you need to report to your doctor. you may have a sensetivity. if you have any fever or itching or burning skin go to the hospital or doctor right away to be sure."

Has anyone been on Tetracycline 250MG capsules? Have you had any side effects? Did it work for your skin? I was just put on this and told that in young children under 16 years it made them sick and very nauseaus and I heard your teeth may fall out. Is this medication that strong? I am in my early 30's and the pharmacist explained that because I'm older I should be able to tolerate it better, but I wanted to see if there is anyone else out there who has experience with this medication. Thanks. Oh and I am on this medication for steroid-induced rosacea.

mlgable replied: "Yes you should tolerate this med well. This is the standard antibiotic treatment for acne and rosacea. It will help keep your Rosacea under control but as you know Rosacea is not cureable. I have taken it in the past for my Rosacea but now choose not to take it for personal reasons."

luckistrike replied: "I took 500 mgs. of tetracycline for about 3 years and, no...no side effectss at all! And yes - It cleared my skin beautifully. Just wish I had gotten on it sooner."

invisiblegirl replied: "it doesn't make the teeth fall out. it causes tooth discoloration though. :)"

Sunshine replied: "PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!! What you've heard about tetracycline is certainly true at least for some people. I was on Tetracycline for about a year. I didn't notice any side effects at first, but then after a few months my denist noticed my the enamal on the back of my teeth was wearing off. I didn't get off it right away, because I didn't make the connection that it could be the medicine. After a few more months, I had extremely large ares in my teeth where the enamal was worn right off. It was after all this that I was told this was a possible side effect of Tetracycline and I was so upset, because there is NOTHING I can do to ever get my teeth back to how they were before. Honestly, if you care about the health of your teeth, DO NOT take this medicine! I have found there are sooo much healthier, natural things you can do for your skin conditions. Oh, and I just wanted to add...no, this product really did nothing for my skin during the year I was on it. But I'm sure it's different for everyone!"

johnmiriani@sbcglobal.net replied: "HI, THIS DRUG COMES WITH SIDE EFFECTS. THERE IS A COMPLETE DESCRIPTION OF THESE SIDE EFFECTS INCLUDED WITH EVERY RX, OR YOU CAN FIND THE INFO USING THE INTERNET. MY SELF, ITS THE TRUTH, I HAD A SKIN RASH ON THE HEAD OF MY PENIS. I KNOW IT SOUNDS LIKE I AM PERVERT, BUT I'M NOT. LOOK IT UP, ITS THERE IN THE WARNINGS ABOUT THIS DRUG. MOST PEOPLE DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM, IF YOU DO, DISCONTINUE AT ONCE. JOHN"

rosacea & dry skin? I was recently diagnosed with Rosacea. My dematologist put me on tetracycline and Metrocream. I think the cream is majorly drying out my skin!!So I started using the Avene milk cleanser and cream (from Shoppers Drug Mart, & not cheap) and it seems to work till I put my cover up on. Then my skin dries right out! It almost makes me not want to go out!! Has this happened to anyone and what did you do to help the situation? Thanks!

Lisa T replied: "Rosacea is considered a chronic (long-term), non-curable skin disease with periodic ups and downs. As opposed to traditional acne, most adult patients do not "outgrow" rosacea. It characteristically involves the central region of the face, causing persistent redness or transient flushing over the areas of the face and nose that normally blush -- mainly the forehead, the chin and the lower half of the nose. It is commonly seen in people with fair or light skin, and particularly in those of Irish and Scottish backgrounds. Unfortunately there isn't much you can do with Rosacea there are many different treatments to consider and if this one isn't helping you, consult your Doctor to prescribe a different one until you have found the one that suits you."

Andrew D replied: "First, I would ask your dermatologist to switch you from Metrocream to Finacea. It's been studied to be *much* more effective for rosacea than Metrocream (MetroGel). Finacea is 15% azelaic acid, and the reduction in redness and sensitivity provided after 8 weeks of treatment with Finacea is much better than with Metrocream/Metrogel. Secondly, you will probably need to use moisturizer after you apply the rosacea medication. Select something basic for sensitive skin -- like an Aveeno moisturizer. Your "cover up" (depending on what it is) could contain some alcohol, or if it is powder-based, is going to further dry-out your skin. You need to select a different cover-up that won't dry out your skin -- selecting one for sensitive skin that is creamy will help. Good luck!"

Has anyone had or heard of steroid induced Rosacea? Well I've been dealing with it for 4 months now. I'm on 2 topical creams, one being metrocream and tetracycline. I am not seeing much of a difference and still have little bumps. What can I do?? See anothe Dr. for a second opinion?

seriouslysanibel replied: "4 months is long enough to see results. If I were you I would either go back to the dermotolgist (depending on your experience with him/her) or get another opinion. I might actually stop the creams to see if it gets worse. If it gets worse your medication isn't strong enough. If it gets better, then that means you could be sensitive to the medication and need different medication. Although rare, prednisone can cause redness of the face. If you are no longer on it, the symptoms usually leave as well. I hope they also looked into the possibility of lupus as well. Not likely, but good to know. This is just my opinion. I am not a doctor...although I like to think I am sometimes!"

tetracycline & yeast infections? Hey!I was diagnosed with rosacea and my dematologist put me on Tetracycline. I take it as directed( 2 pills twice a day). The thing is that after a few days, it kind of feels like I'm getting what I assume to be is a yeast infection. I get itchy and start to get a bit of discharge( sorry!lol). I stop my pills and the symptoms go away! Has this happened to anyone elso or is it all just in my head? Thanks!!

Lea L replied: "Prolonged use of antibiotics can cause yeast infections. Check with your doctor."

Does Tetracycline topical cream cause hair loss on applied areas? When I was about 15 I started using tetracycline on my cheeks to combat rosacea on my cheeks. I applied topical cream every night for several months, almost a year, and saw minimal results before my doctor advised me to stop. I am now 22 and still have rosacea on my cheeks. I can grow a full mountain man beard on my neck and my chin and sideburns, and full mestache. But the area on my cheeks grows no hair, even fine milia. It starts under the eyes and all the way down to jaw line, where most people grow facial hair. My dad has a full beard and I'm otherwise a hairy dude (chest hair, some back hair... you get the picture) Could this be caused by the topical cream I used when I was younger? I researched this side effect, and saw one site that said it was an "unconfirmed" side effect but it is hard to find answers. Has anyone else expereinced this? Anyone else heard about this? Anyone know if it is true?

alpla replied: "No."

Dr. Muhammad Khawar Nazir replied: "tetracycline is an antibiotic . its role is to killing the microorgnanisms and it has nothing to do with hair loss."

purefish28 replied: "*** My Success with Natural Techniques To Re-grow Lost Hair Been on minoxidil ( R0gaine® ) for about a year and a half and have not seen even the smallest amount of regrowth that i almost fell into depression. My hair only started visibly growing on the bald spot after skeptically trying out the various natural techniques to re-grow lost hair @ I would highly recommend this easy to follow step-by-step guide with pictures to anyone who is suffering from hair loss right now. But remember this isn't a miracle cure for baldness as you will also need to put in some effort in order to see results. And its only a minimum commitment of 15 minutes a day to help re-grow your lost hair. Anyway, its also a cheaper and effective way of re-growing lost hair compared to those unnatural ways which may involve harsh chemicals that may have side effects."

Anyone know the best things for Acne Rosacea? Just wondering cause I have been on metro gel and tetracycline to control it and they don't seem to work. It seems I am a lucky one, no acne at all in high school but as an adult I am cursed. I woulda rather been a pizza face in high school...lol thanks for your responses

Tayana K replied: "proactive solution is the best."

pinkrosegreeneyes bluerose replied: "Those are the standard treatments? I had a thyroid problem and when THAT was finally under control the rosacea seemed to clear up? My family dr said the t hyroid was ok but I didn't believe him and went to a thyroid specialist who found hyperthyroidism and a goiter. I had rosacea for 3 years before that? As far as the redness goes, Eucerine Redness relief moisturizer is great! Get your thyroid checked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

skindoc replied: "Hi I tried some of these home based remedies and they did work for me ,this link has a lot of information and forums to discuss issues pertaining to skin, hair and weight problems so here goes,.... Good luck"

Amy replied: "I struggled with acne for years and I finally found the solution that works for me. We have been fooled, tricked, deceived, and just plain lied to. It's time that someone put a stop to it, and everyone learn the truth! Those of us who suffer from acne have usually been given 2 choices and neither of them work: 1. Over the counter remedies such as cleansers, creams, ointments, etc. These things have been proven over and over again not to work. Why? It does not address the root cause of the problem. 2. Go see a doctor and or dermatologist. They will generally prescribe prescription drugs which include topicals and or antibiotics. This, too, has been proven over and over again not to work. Why? It does not address the root cause of the problem. I found a step-by-step program that cured my acne and it has never come back. It is amazing and doesn’t use any drugs or doctors. The truth is that acne can be cured…if we know the secret the doctors and drug companies don’t want us to know. There is a great website:... that has all the details. I really suggest you check it out and see if it works as well for you as it did for me."

Treatment for adult onset acne (Rosacea)? I've battled rosacea for years and my dr put me on Metrogel, which seemed to just make my face worse. He changed me to 100mg tetracycline once a day about a month ago. My face is completely clear, however I have a couple of questions for those that might know: 1. My face has a ruddy kind of look to it. Anyone else on this treatment experienced this? 2. I just feel kind of tired and slightly crappy all the time since he put me on it. Is that normal? I hate to change because this has been the first thing that has worked, but am worried about side effects from long term use. Anybody else on this treatment?

spelling_sara replied: "Try Proactive, it helps just about every acne issue and has been proven to work on really hard cases. I do not know of anyting else. sorry"

Zoran Gajic replied: "If it works for you, I'm very happy. I never used what you had prescribed. Maybe you're right, you shouldn't change the treatment after all this time when you finally found something that really works for you. If you want, you can read an article I've wrote about ClearPores you can find it here: Did you know you must also fight skin problems from the inside, not just from the outside? When there is skin problem, there is a problem from inside our body. To heal things long-term you need to take care of your health, the skin will take care of itself when our body is okay inside, believe me on this. I help people with special program I invented. For last few years I've only had positive results. This is a special treatment. Long story short. When someone changes their lifestyle, everything from diet to stress, from working habits to relaxation, when you balance your body energies you become very healthy. And your skin shines. I had many health and skin problems many years ago. But after I changed my lifestyle everything disappeared. After a few years of research what happened with me, I could understand how things work inside our body... How our skin works too. If however you chose to try and help your skin from inside and outside, with the best acne treatment on the market, read this article: Best Wishes to you, My goal is that everyone can put an end to acne! I hate them as much as you do, maybe even more! o_O"

iluvmusic replied: "I've had adult acne for yrs & now I'm getting rosacea, w/ enlarged nose swelling-- that is just supposed to occur in men according to my book, but I'm female, probably too much male hormones in my body? I give up on what's not worked & am trying all the vitamins I don't get because of the junk I eat/stress etc. Here's what I've just researched & been reading. A book called "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." It's huge & there's a newer version out $20-30 in stores or try amazon.com & half.ebay.com -- may be cheaper. Probably, the best 1st thing is a cleanse all Vitamin stores & Walmart has them. Just think of all the chemicals from processed foods & antibiotics we put in. See, antibiotics kill good & bad bacteria in our body. It makes sense to clean out 1st. You will go to the bathroom more, but I'm not talkin uncontrollably. Take a Vit B Complex (that has all the different B's you need), Vit A, VitC, (can give you the runs decrease til you see what your body needs),Vit E, Acidopholus (it's like eating a ton of yogurt & must be kept in frig), L Lyseine (the book lists L Cysteine, so I'll switch when I run out) (L Lyseine is for cold sores too), Evening Primrose Oil, Flaxseed Oil, Kelp, Gotu Kola (that one'll make you gain weight), Biotin, Potassium, & Zinc. Most of the multi vit's I've checked unless are from a pharmacy maybe, like The Medicinne Shoppe do not have enough of these to put a dent in my face, no pun intended! And, I'm sick of it, this is a battle I now intend to win. I can't stand looking in the mirror! I know this sounds like a lot but Puritans Pride has a catalog that's cheap, 1st time buyers get a reduced prices, s/h is $4.50 never increases, B1G2 etc, sales often, & they have Vitamin World stores in Malls. Follow the doses on the bottle. Except, the Gotu Kola supplement was listed in "First" mag & says they've now found up to 3,000 mg a day will repair skin quickly. So, I take 3- 250 mg pills 3X a day, when results are reached drop to 250-500. The Biotin my friend says her relative works in the med field & says Biotin also repairs. I've only been faithfully doing this for 1 wk, knock on wood I woke up today & my skin seems brighter & clearer. I'm taking other things too, for poison ivy pms etc. Most of what I've listed are all the same supplements listed under: Rosacea, Oily sin & Acne. Also, the Vit B will give you energy, I'm taking a time release form. Check w/ your md 1st if possible. Email me anytime if you want. P S Just skimmed your answers it's true the book says acne/ rosacea is a way for your body telling you somethings wrong on the inside."

A cure for Rosacea? I have a skin condition called Rosacea. My doctor tells me there is no cure for this. I was given tetracycline, but it didn't help. I've had this for about a year now and it's been gradually getting worse. I'm getting desperate. Please, does anyone have any good advice?

Michael*94 replied: "I don't know if i have this but i'm a little red on the cheeks, i would also like to know a cure or method to help."

Curious L ...... replied: "There are other things they can do for it. There are gels and liquids for the face, there is some kind of light treatments ....... other medicines. I know I have it and have had to do different things at different times. Keep your hands off your face it will only make it worse. Stress makes it worse and so does being outside. Relax and go see a dermatologist. Hope this helps! :) good luck!"

Amethyst1202 replied: "I had this problem and the GP prescribed a clear cream called Metrogel or Metronidazole. I found that it was more effective than the anti-biotic treatment. Hope this was useful."

jay1986 replied: "there is no cure but there are treatments that can help a lot antibiotics finacea metrogel accutane laser treatments IPL treatments."

Andrew D replied: "Your doctor is correct that there is no cure, but tetracycline is a relatively poor choice for treatment. You have to watch what you eat when you take it (no milk or calcium/magnesium-containing products), and it's not really a first-choice therapy for rosacea. Finacea, a topical treatment, has been demonstrated to be very effective for controlling rosacea symptoms (better than MetroGel -- a commonly prescribed, but not very effective -- antibiotic cream/gel). Bacteria are not actually the correct therapeutic target for rosacea. The over-production of certain inflammatory proteins in the skin have recently been established to be the probable cause of rosacea. A prescription wash, called Plexion, can help Rosacea, and if you're going to take an antibiotic, doxycycline is a better choice than tetracycline. An old blood pressure medication (which actually doesn't reduce blood pressure much) called clonidine can help to reduce flushing redness in many patients. The common dosage is between .05 and .1mg 1 to 2 times per day. If your skin is very oily, low-dose Accutane may sometimes be prescribed but usually only in cases where it does not respond to other treatments. IPL (intense pulsed light) treatments are also very effective for rosacea patients with very fair skin. (Those with darker complexions generally don't do as well with IPL, and it's also expensive -- not covered by insurance. Some laser treatments can help, but they are even more expensive (and the same complexion rule applies -- lighter skin does better). The target with rosacea is control, not cure. Even if you pursue IPL treatments, you have to get maintenance treatments over time in order to preserve the results."
