Has anyone taken Trazodone during pregnancy and everything turned out fine? I am currently 12 wks pregnant. Have been on 50 mg of Trazodone. My doctor told me to stay on it, the benefits outweighed the risks. But I have seen two other doctors and they couldnt understand why I was still taking the medicine. I am currently weaning down off of it. But I am worried that I have already done irreversable to my baby since I took it the entire first trimester. I just want to know if anyone has been pregnant and on this medicine and what the outcomes were.

possible pregnancy and trazodone? im taking trazodone. but there is a chance i am pregnant. i have a few symptoms but i think its just because im nervous about it. because my period isnt due for 6 more days. im tired and i have to go to to the washroom all the time. and im hungry. i could be delusionnal but i had sex on the day i was ovulating and the 3 days after that to. so yeah. anybody here thinks there is a chance im pregnant and if so, should i stop taking my meds? PS: i would go see my doctor but he is onleave until august 3rd. i have an appt with him on the 7th

stacy.jackson@att.net replied: "You may be So the best thing for you to do is to take an home test and see what that says if it tells you that you are. Stop taking the meds until the doctors tells you something different!"

I need to know if there are any sleep aides that are safe during pregnancy? I am about 4 weeks pregnant and before I got pregnant, I was diagnosed with horrible insomnia that can only be cured by prescription sleep aides. I absolutely can not fall asleep without medicine. I have had this problem all my life just about and now that I have found a sleep aide that works I am afraid it will hurt my baby. I tried not taking it for a few nights and was up all night and was completely exhausted that I had to take it to get some sleep. I have been taking trazodone for over a year now and I don't know if it's safe. I have talked to my doctor a little about it but not actually seen her. She told me to reduce it and then eventually not to take it all. I tried reducing it and I still couldn't sleep without my normal dosage. Does anyone know about this drug and if it is safe? Or are there any sleep aides that are safe during pregnancy? Extremely exhausted

mageta8 replied: "The best thing to do is to consult your doctor."

saradmb1987 replied: "ask your doctor if its safe, otherwise you and your baby could be in trouble."

strange_halfspin replied: "You need your doctor to help you get off of these medications. Since it sounds like your sleep aid is habit-forming, you need professional advice about the best way to reduce it and how quickly this should be done; you don't want to harm your baby! I believe that diphenhydramine (benadryl) is a safe sleep aid to take during pregnancy; however, all health questions during pregnancy should be directed to your own obgyn!!"

Brianna B replied: "When I was expecting I was given an Ambien once or twice towards the end. Talk to your doctor."

nunquamcede replied: "Trazodone is a Class C drug, which means its effects during preganancy are unknown. You are STRONGLY advised to contact your doctor immediately about continuing to take the drug, and may need to find alternatives during your pregnancy. Although not as severe as what you outline, my wife had sleep-related issues throughout her pregancy, and found that some elements of non-prescription sleep therapy helped -- see the related link for BabyCenter."

Unknown replied: "Ask your OBGYN and ask your local pharmacist. Call anytime day or night to your local pharmacy and ask to speak with the pharmacist. It is free and they know more about drugs than a doctor. Ask if there are any safe sleeping pills for a pregnant woman."

berry2upie replied: "I know it's hard to sleep with a growing baby inside of you but my advice which is what alot of doctors are saying these days is to take no prescription or non prescription medications during pregnancy unless it's really neccessary. Drugs of any kind can harm your unborn baby."

cereal replied: "I think you should talk to your pharmist to see if you should spot this medication or reduce the dose plus talk to your doctor face to face. You should let your doctor now that it is important for you to be sure that this medication is not going to hurt the baby i am carrying."

jessdoit2 replied: "Trazadone has not been studied for its effects during pregnancy. Check out their website at I am 24 weeks pregnant and have found a lot of good pregnancy info at"

tinktink replied: "When I was pregnant my doctor gave me seconal (spelling?). You have to have a prescription. It wasn't the greatest but it did help and it wasn't harmful to the baby. Tylenol PM is also safe. Try taking a worm bath with lavender oils."

violet replied: "benadryl(diphenhydramine hydochloride) is safe and its the exact same drug that is in simply sleep and tylenol pm minus the tylenol(acetominophen). if you dont believe me read the active ingrediants on the boxes. it may be a bigger dose though. Just take some benadryl or ask your doc."

t h replied: "This should be discussed with your doctor, as you had problems with this before. Unisom is safe to take while pregnant, but only take 1/2 of the recommended dosage. Many doctors prescribe this to be taken with a B6 vitamin to help with morning sickness."

he4v3nly_ang3l_7 replied: "Have you tried herbal teas to fall asleep? I use a tea called Sleeptime Tea and absolutely love it! My sister in law checked into it and found nothing in it you couldn't have while you are pregnant and she uses it to sleep too. Check it out. I find it at most any grocery store in town by the other herbal teas. Good luck."

marketingexpert replied: "There are a lot of great articles and information on how stress can effect sleep at ( ). there are also many tips for solving the problem."

does taking anti depressants and antianxiety while wanting a baby harmful to pregnancy? i have panic disorder and i take klodipin, cymbalta, and trazodone. trazadone is for sleep and cymbalta for depression and balancing my seritonin. klodipin is and anti anxiety and calms my panic attacks. these medications work for me and i belive in the past i never got pregnant was because the stress my body indured from panic attacks everyday. now that my chimicals are balanced i feel maybe i will also become more firtile. is that true or could these medications cause infirtililty? are they safe to take during pregnancy? and now that im and happy and back on track will cause me to be able to get pregnant on theses medications? what should i watch for while trying to conceive on meds?

april_hwth replied: "my doctor is letting me take effexor. do some research online, but don't freak out when you see something that says it can cause heart defects. stay calm and read lots of websites or books. talk to your obgyn. says risk factor is B, which is a step better than effexor which is C. Cymbalta has a category risk of C. C basically means there's not enough studies to say"

amethyst m replied: "i dont know if they will able you to get pregnant but if you do end up conceving you may have to stop taking them it all depends on what youre ob/gyn says"

kailey0819 replied: "i would go to a OBGYN and talk about all you question and see what they have to say i wouldn'ask just any one they could be wrong then something can happen to your baby good luck"

michaluna replied: "All of these meds carry risks. The risk is your baby will be born with a birth defect. Some of them are more dangerous than others. I don't know about those ones in particular, but you can research them online and you should also talk to a qualified obstetrician. Not strangers online. Ideally, you should be medication-free when trying to conceive to eliminate the possibility of medication-related birth defects."

I_know! replied: "I'm not sure about those specific meds, but some are safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. However, drug companies will normally say that none are safe for legal reasons. Talk to your ob/gyn, but if he/she just looks it up in a drug reference book, the answer you get may not be accurate. There are some good sources on the net, particularly motherisk.org, based at Toronto Sick Kids hospital. The only one that I know for sure is not recommended while bf is Paxil; I took Celexa."

frostedbetty replied: "It safe to take some medications for these types of problems, generally a seritonin regulating drug is fairly safe they may ask you to go off of it once your in your third trimester so as not to have the baby go through withdrawls when they are born. Might also cause your baby to be smaller. or their lungs not fully developed. It depends greatly on your dose, you could always in stead of going off of them completely try to manage on a lower dose, so you minimize the risks involved. Talk to your doctor about it and get his opinion. I read "the panic free pregnancy" I loved this book for honest uptodate information. Dont worry about it to much. Good luck!!"

question about pregnancy tests? my boyfriend left me 2 weeks ago and i moved in with my aunt. i was throwing up, unable to eat, very emotional, but i thought it was due to the breakup. my aunt said i looked pregnant, but i remember having my last period around the 10th of october. she went out and bought a pregnancy test last night, i followed the directions, 2 pink lines, only the positive line was a lighter pink than the other pink line. so she went out and got a different brand, same thing, 2 lines but 1 line lighter. i phoned the 24hr tele health line and she advised me to take the test first thing in the morning and to make an appointment with my doctor. so i took a 3rd test this morning and same friggin thing, 2 pink lines but not the same color. i phoned my doc to make an appointment for a blood test and she asked me to describe the lines to her. i dug them out of the trash to find that one of the tests now had 2 very pink lines. i have been taking anti depression meds (trazodone) could that affect a pregnancy test... why would one line be lighter than the other, and why would there be 2 lines if i might not be pregnant

iluvmygirls97 replied: "more than likely you are pregnant. i would make a doctors appt to find out for sure. the one line might be lighter because you didnt let it sit long enough after you peed on it. good luck though, theres lots of single mommies out there doing just fine on their own!"

Zenia replied: "If there is a line then your pregnant. It says on most directions that come with the tests that one line may be darker or lighter than the other. I was on the same medicine before i got pregnant and i was told to stop taking it while i was pregnant. Ask your dr if you can still take it and if it is safe to just stop taking it. Good Luck and im sorry about the break up."

lolachan replied: "Two pink lines no matter how faint the first line is means you're pregnant. And since you've taken so many pregnancy tests and they all came out with two lines pretty much guarantees pregnancy. The faintness of the line doesn't really matter that much as long as the line appeared. It could be faint because you're still very early in your pregnancy. I'm sorry that you and your boyfriend broke up, seems like a very unfortunate time for that to happen since you're pretty much guaranteed pregnant right now. I would go get a blood test at your doctors office and just take life one step at a time now. It sounds like you have wonderful support from your aunt, and hopefully there are more people around you who can help you out. Explore your options and as stressful as it may be to find out your pregnant in not such an ideal situation, the joy this baby will bring you will be endless. Good luck!"

Valeria1203 replied: "Any bit of line in the positive window means a positive result. The pregnancy hormone HCG must be present to make any of that line appear, no matter how faint. And the only way you have that hormone is if you are pregnant! Good luck to you."

Twizzler replied: "You're probably pregnant. If anything shows up in the second box, you're pregnant. The hormone is just not strong enough in your urine yet to give you a dark line. If you're taking trazodone that could be really harmful for your baby. You should talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits and see about alternatives (if you're planning on keeping the baby, which I think you are). Also the longer you wait to look at the test the darker the lines get. Anyway, good luck on the blood test. That'll let you know without a doubt."

Kristen replied: "Sometimes it could read funny if your hormone levels aren't quite high enough. I had trouble when I took my test. I couldn't tell if it said I was pregnant or not. I got a digital test and it said I was pregnant. Try that one. It's simple to read. Going to your doctor would also be helpful. Try the digital tests."

Candy L replied: "If there's 2 lines- and 1 in the instructions indicated pregnancy then you're preg. These tests are really accurate. One line may be lighter cuz you're early in the pregnancy or drank a lot of fluids making it deluded. Make an app asap w an OB and the dr that gave you the anti depression meds. Best of luck!"

how certain can u be when this happens on 3 pregnancy tests? my boyfriend left me 2 weeks ago and i moved in with my aunt. i was throwing up, unable to eat, very emotional, but i thought it was due to the breakup. my aunt said i looked pregnant, but i remember having my last period around the 10th of october. she went out and bought a pregnancy test last night, i followed the directions, 2 pink lines, only the positive line was a lighter pink than the other pink line. so she went out and got a different brand, same thing, 2 lines but 1 line lighter. i phoned the 24hr tele health line and she advised me to take the test first thing in the morning and to make an appointment with my doctor. so i took a 3rd test this morning and same friggin thing, 2 pink lines but not the same color. i phoned my doc to make an appointment for a blood test and she asked me to describe the lines to her. i dug them out of the trash to find that one of the tests now had 2 very pink lines. i have been taking anti depression meds (trazodone) could that affect a pregnancy test... why would one line be lighter than the other, and why would there be 2 lines if i might not be pregnant

I Said So replied: "I don't think the medication you are taking would affect a pregnancy test. If it did, i think it would have stated that on the directions on the pregnancy test you took. There's really no other answer until you go to the doctor and find out for sure."

Follow up Trazodone questions? Loaded question HELP! And is it ok to take if I may be pregnant? I posted a question last night about if trazodone works for sleep and your experiences with it- well I took it for the first time last night and I feel like it made me more paranoid-I had crazy dreams and even woke my husband up at one point because I woke up thinking someone was talking in my house! (WTF!) I woke up twice- but thankfully fell back asleep after a bit. Usually if I wake up in the night I stay awake. Then- I slept til 12pm. I work from home so its ok, but I dont like that- and I feel really really stupid this morning, and really drowsy and "hung over" I had a stuffy nose this morning, and just feel weird. I think I had a slight addiction to Tylenol PM- nothing too serious, I have taken probably 3-5 every single night for the last 3 years, and stopped taking them lastnight after taking the Traz- I dont know if this has something to do with it. ALSO- I may be pregnant- I told my doctor this, she said to take a pregnancy test in a week She didnt say to not take the meds, but I didnt ask either, and now am wondering if I should stop taking it if there is a possibility of being pregnant... Sorry for the loaded question- I so appreciate you taking to time to help me---Thank you so much!

PooPooLaTrash replied: "My first thought is that you are taking too much Tylenol PM. If you need them for sleep, get diphenhydramine only (it's the active ingredient...antihistamine... in Tylenol PM that induces sleep). Too much tylenol can cause liver toxicity. However, and this is a big however, no studies have been done to prove or disprove the potential for problems when taken during pregnancy. The same goes for Trazodone. There just isn't enough data available to state with any certainty that there will or will not be problems. The best way to go through a pregnancy is drug free if at all possible. I realize in some cases, this is not possible, but it's always best if it can be done."

over a month and a half, no period, negative pregnancy results. Help!? I am about a month and a half late and took a two pregnancy test one last week and one yesterday and both negative. I stop taking birth control close to a month now because i decided to have a baby. I was taking loestrin 24 for 3 months and it made me litterally sick and my doctor recommended i should stop using birth control for a while. soon after i decided in trying to conceive. since i began loestrin it compleatly messed up my cycle for my period would come exactly every 28 days. i dont know when i will get my period now but its been a month and a half already, no period and no positive test result. I am a bit frustrated and dont know what is going on. I need advice on this and want to know if anyone has experienced this and can give me their own advice. please help. I am also taking effexor for depression, trazodone for sleep and alprazolam for anxiety.. I dont know if this would affect conceiving.

Rebecca S replied: "OMG I was on that crap too! Isn't it terrible! I was so sick I couldn't eat and barely could stand up let alone walk!! If I were you I'd go see your doctor and have a pre-conception check up! Just make sure all the medications you are on wont effect the baby or prevent conception. Best of luck!"

courtney replied: "So here's what happened to me when I went off my birth control to try to conceive. I stopped taking it in March, hoping to conceive in April. Well I spent, more like wasted, money on the ovulation kits and took them all through April. I never ovulated. It was because my body hadn't put itself back on track yet from being off my BC. We didn't try in May because the chart said that the baby would be a girl and we wanted to try for a boy. So we tried in June, didn't bother buying the ovulation kits, just had fun trying, pretty much everyday for 2 weeks. Low and behold, July 4th, I take a test and it was positive. Had an ultrasound at 4 months, instead of 5 because I was measuring big, and it's a boy! So just give your body time to get back on track. It will happen, but when you go off BC it screws everything up. Wait for your next period so you know you're ovulating and go for it the next month. Good luck!"

Has anyone taken alprazolam (xanax) or trazodone while pregnant? Okay, this is going to make me seem like a monster but truly I'm not. I just want to be honest so I can get the best help I can. I am 28 years old and I've been on methadone for 8 years for a heroin addiction. I can honestly say that when I started taking methadone I never picked heroin up again. That is truly a feat itself. Although, I finally got over any desire to use hard drugs again and the methadone truly saved me from that lifestyle I am currently (and for the last 8 years) dependent on methadone. I know that taking methadone while pregnant wont cause any real problems so I've made my peace with that. When I started on methadone the addictionoligist/shrink put me on 1.5 mgs of xanax for all the major panic attacks and fears of dying. I've taken the same amount of xanax for 8 years daily until just recently I needed more and got moved up to 2.5mgs a day. I also have taken trazodone the entire 8 years at a dosage of 100 mgs a night until recently I was prescribed more now I take 200-300 mgs a night. If you're wondering why the all of a sudden need for the increaseses and ask me about detox or rehab I will tell you so you don't think my doctor is crazy for upping my meds (all of them). I went into a detox/rehab program because I finally wanted to be free of methadone but what they didn't tell me was that the more methadone you've had in your body over the years builds up in your bones and having an 8 year xanax mixture is the hardest thing to get off of all the drugs known.Methadone has a 30-45 day half life but no one told me that.I assumed it was like any opiate. Anyway, they assured me and my family it could be done in 14 days which is just stupid since it would take 30 days minimum to leave my system on top of the benzos. They said what ever we wanted to hear to get our $25,000. After 17 days in detox I thought i was going to die but they moved me to the treatment side where you get no meds at all.I left after 2 days there. I started taking a lot of different pills to ease the withdrawals but in the end went back home and back to the clinic and got put back on methadone, xanax, trazadone, and clonidine and got my meds increased because of how unstable medically and mentally I was. My doc is a good doc but since I'm probably about 5 weeks I haven't told him I'm pregnant yet.I haven;t gotten a test yet but I've had 4 miscarriages over the last 2 years that I know what pregnancies feel like and I know how my body reacts. Here's the true problem, I was put back on all these meds about 4 weeks ago and it's selfish of me to say this but I need these medications especially with how unstable my body and mind are since the detox. I am not a monster. I don't want to hurt my baby but I can't help but think me having constant panic attacks to the point where I can't leave the house and sometimes can't even speak to people I know and love much less strangers. Not to mention I can't sleep through the night without the trazodone and xanax. I don't want to hurt the baby by taking these meds but I don't want to hurt it by not taking them because an unstable mother can hurt her fetus much less the withdrawals that will most likely hurt or even kill it. And here's the monster in me...I don't want to tell my doc I'm pregnant because he will just confirm it with a test right there and take away all the meds that keep me stable. I can hardly keep my anxiety in check with the meds when I wasn't pregnant but now it's unbearable and my hands shake and the panic is even more out of control with the hormonal changes. I just don't want to be taken off my meds and have him start messing around with trying new ones especially now. Trust me I didn't plan this it just happened and only once which is all it takes. So I'm in quite the predicament. So if anyone out there has any experience with xanax daily and or trazodone while pregnant let me know. I've read all about different opinions on the net so I'd just like some experiences and advice if possible other than the obvious answer of go see your doctor. Oh and is lower back pain common? I just thought I'd throw that out there too. I also apologize if it seemed like I rambled but I just wanted everyone to know the facts and the truth. So thank you for your time in reading it. I also have read infor about how xanax is so dangerous for the fetus in the first trimester which scares me since I'm almost 6 weeks.I've read it causes serious congenital defect and premature birthwieght and delivery being on of the least. They talk of deformaties in the physical and in the forming of organs.Cleft lips ,hypothermia, maybe brain damage&like i said congetial abnormalities.I couldn't live knowing I'd done that to my child and I feel like since the hormonal changes I'm about to snap. The anxiety is more than I can handle.I live with my grams and we are as close as best friends I tell her everything but I could never explain how this happened since the circamstance of the conseption was shameful in act(at least to her,she supports me$)I am would tighter than ever&I'm hiding from her&every1&jump when I hear noises. If I thought I had bad anxiety b4 Im losing it now-hormones on top of the secret &stress.I've never had so much anxiety& thing is that nothing is trigering it.Hrmone My normal debilitating anxiety on top of hormones that make preg. women have anxiety anyway is me times a million. The meds aren't enough and aren't working now that my body is changing.I never considered myself insane b4 but now with these changes my anxiety and fear has turned in2 agoraphobia and paranoia and gram's will notice very soon that somethings wrong, cant keep hiding from herbut can't seem to talk without hyperventilating and me getin sick&weak on top. It's really bad.My bf is in a rehab so Im alone. Can't make the anxiety go away or calm it down.Pregnancy makes your normal meds ineffective bc of the blood&eating for 2.It would probably take a tripple dose of what im taking to feel normal&thats unacceptable for the baby.Grams doesn't understand why I won't leave the house to get a job or why im so isolated. She will soon see me have a freakout or notice how ill I am.I stay in the bathroom for hours with uncontrolable crying(bet she thinks im doing drugs)and i shake costantly. since my grams pays for my meds she is in every apt. with my doc &if my meds get changed she will want to know why&if they increse the methadone she will refuse&think it a ploy for them to keep me on it longer.Im tapering down now which is a major nono while pregnant but she doesnt know&she figures if she's paying she makes the rules.I can't take it all at once&that might result in me being homeless without a penny or friends 2 go 2 especially when she finds out that the olny time I could have cocieved was when i met my bf when he got a pass to go to the hospital for asprin.Let's put it this way,I did it for him more than me&let's just say he didn't have a hosp.room.I will have to tell her how it happened bc his pass was so short&no way of goin anywhere but the hosp. The details will shame her&she will be disgusted with me&think me gross.I will have nowhere to turn then. She thinks im just being lazy She don't realize I am sick&this is new all really hard on my body&mind.Im not lazy since my grams pays for my meds she is in every apt. with my doc &if my meds get changed she will want to know why&if they increse the methadone she will refuse&think it a ploy for them to keep me on it longer.Im tapering down now which is a major nono while pregnant but she doesnt know&she figures if she's paying she makes the rules.I can't take it all at once&that might result in me being homeless without a penny or friends 2 go 2 especially when she finds out that the olny time I could have cocieved was when i met my bf when he got a pass to go to the hospital for asprin.Let's put it this way,I did it for him more than me&let's just say he didn't have a hosp.room.I will have to tell her how it happened bc his pass was so short&no way of goin anywhere but the hosp. The details will shame her&she will be disgusted with me&think me gross.I will have nowhere to turn then. She thinks im just being lazy She don't realize I am sick&this is new all really hard on my body&mind.Im not lazy

afwifekari replied: "You need to tell your doctor. There is not a doctor out there that will yank you off the drugs cold turkey. Trust your doctor he will know what is best for you and your baby. I don't know if Trazodone is safe during pregnancy but there are other meds that can help you sleep but you would have to slowly ween off of Trazodone if you can't take it during pregnancy. As far as xanax you aren't supposed to take it during pregnancy but I have heard of doctors prescribing it to pregnant women who have very severe panic attacks. Xanax has to slowly be weened down. Maybe talk to your doctor about lowering your xanax intake but staying on it just not at 2.5mg. The lower the dose the better for the baby. I have an anxiety disorder and thought I would never be able to sleep without Trazodone and thought my anxiety would never lessen. I took Librium for almost 2 weeks straight and then realized I didn't want to be dependent so I chose to suffer through the anxiety. It did get better with therapy and making myself not avoid panic stricken situations. I made myself go places and do things that would cause panic attacks and made myself stay in that enviornment. It's the only way to get over it. You have to desensitize yourself. I would not recommend going off these drugs or trying to detox while pregnant though. Once you have the baby you really should try to very very slowly ween yourself off of one drug at a time. xanax being the last one to ween off of. Your anxiety will eventually get better but the road to recovery is hard but it beats being dependent on medications. By the way I am also pregnant and just found out. You will get through this but most importantly just trust your doctor and tell your doc you are pregnant."

I haven't had a period in over 4 months... why? (def. not pregnant)? I haven't had a period since at least Feburary. I have had sex twice since then but I used protection both times and have taken 2 home pregnancy tests that were both negative. I am on several medications and was wondering if maybe that was why. I currently take 80mgs of prozac, 60mgs of cymbalta, 40mgs of protonix, 550mgs of Seroquel, 350mgs of Trazodone, 2mgs of Klonipin, 10mgs Singular and use a 17g albuterol inhaler. I am 22 years old and am very overweight. My period didn't start until I was 16 or 17, and it's never really been normal, but this is the longest it's ever been that it has come. I have never been to a gyn. because I am scared of what would go on (psych. issues are a major problem I have) Any one have any ideas what to do or what could be going on? Help!!

**Goddess** replied: "u need to see a doc.. :("

stoneco replied: "you should definitely see a doctor. ask your friends who they go to and if they like their doctor and try that. maybe one of your friends will go with you so that you will feel better about the ordeal."

mlgable replied: "There is no clue what is going on and you have to see a doc to get checked out. YOU DO NOT have to see a GYN as your regular doc can do this for you. Since you are 22 years old AND sexually active you are long over due for a pap smear and pelvic exam. Call your doc and get all of this scheduled. If you are nervous about having to see a doc then ask him to prescribe something you can take an hour or so before you have to go to the appointment to help calm your nerves. You health is very important so go get these tests done and figure out what is going on."

Leah christina replied: "i think it it may be due to your weight/ medication but you should really check with a doctor to make sure everything is alright."

random replied: "You should take a pregnancy test now to make sure that you're not pregnant. If the test is negative, I agree that you should see your MD. However, it sounds like you have had irregular periods in the past and that you might be suffering from depression/psychiatric illness. It's possible that your mental health could be impairing the hormones in your body to regulate so you might not be menstruating."
