Valtrex Without Herpes Facts in Q&A
Can a person without herpes use Valtrex? is it possbile to use Valtrex so that you lower your chances of getting herpes. IT IS NOT GENITAL HERPES! I AM NOT SURE IF HE EVEN HAS HERPES IM JUST TRYING TO BE SAFE. ONE OF MY FRIENDS THINK HE HAS IT ON HIS LIP HOWEVER HE SHOWS NO SIGN

Cole Marie' replied: "It will hope lower the chances of spreading if you do have herpes but no it won't lower the chances of you getting them. Be safe. Use a condom!"

ianmcilnay replied: "Sorry, it doesn't work that way. Just be careful who you have sex with."

Shadow Dancer replied: "No. Over use, or use of any type of anti-viral or anti-biotic when not needed can cause the medication to become useless when you do need it. The only prevention from getting herpes is use of a condom, abstinence or your infected partner taking an anti-viral and none of these are 100% guaranteed except abstinence! The only other reason for the use of anti-virals, other than herpes, are for other viruses, such as shingles or even chicken pox!"

jeva75 replied: "It will not lower your chances of getting herpes it will only lower your chances of spreading it. This medication can have some side effects like most medication so don't take medication unless you need to. Also, having protective sex is a for sure way to lower your chances of getting herpes."

B.J. C replied: "I am not aware of any convincing data looking at using valtrex (valacyclovir) as a pre-exposure prophylaxis in non-immune compromised individuals to prevent the acquisition of herpes. It has been used in certain specific conditions as a pre-exposure prophylaxis for cytomegalovirus (CMV). These specific conditions usually involve a severely compromised immune system (where acquiring infection could result in death) like people with advanced HIV disease (AIDS) or transplant recipients at risk. It is not the best drug to use with CMV pre-exposure but depending on availability of other meds or allergies to other meds it has been used. I do not think that, in a (very quick) risk/benefit analysis, use of valacycovir as a prophylaxis for herpes infection among the general public would be in the best interest of the public. Resistance to acyclovir (and therefore famcyclovir and valacyclovir) has been recorded and we don't want to increase the occurences of resistant viruses---we have enough of these already."

Nicolas replied: "Drugs like Valtrex are no preventative for people who have no herpes infection. Herpes comes in many forms. To protect you from any infection with the genital herpes, you have to be pro-active and demand that your partner uses every time a condom when you have intercourse. No unprotected oral sex either!"

How much will valtrex for genital herpes cost without insurance? Is there some kind of form of valtrex that is cheaper that i can take on a daily basis like valtrex because i dont have health insurance anymore... the last time i got valtrex for 7 days it cost $45 with insurance...

mamiforu replied: "Got damn that's a lot to pay! I guess I had better insurance b/c my copay was never over $15. What you do is stay away from the brand-names. The generics: valtrex -> valacyclovir...this may not be a generic yet famvir -> famcyclovir zovirax? -> acyclovir you can google the generics to see how much they cost, but they will be waayyyy cheaper. also some prescription websites have coupons...i know you used to be able to get them from valtrex website"

question asker replied: "I just got a Rx filled yesterday and with my insurance I paid $30.00 for my co-pay, but underneath it tells the amount my insurance saved and it said my insurance saved me $210.00 --- so I'm guessing a 30 day supply is close to $250.00 without any kind of insurance. Have you tried looking into any kind of patient assistance programs or things of that sort ? They can help you save money on prescriptions if you are uninsured. Good Luck to You."

LINDSEY S replied: "in Ontario Canada (where i live) it was about $60 for 12 pills at strength of 500mg (before taxes) and that was with out a drug plan (i believe that would be the equivalency of having insurance in the US). there are cheaper meds out there that do relatively the same thing as Valtrex."

lilwhizz replied: "You can get get Valtrex cheaper if you get it from Planned Parenthood. Otherwise, you could try the generic acyclovir (Zovirax) and get it for $4.00 30 day supply or $10.00 90 day supply from Walmart."

jadair130 replied: "Hey Brit - unfortunstly i sm one of the millions of Americans without Health insurance. I only use Valtrex - not the generic...the other stuff just doesnt work for me! Fortunatly for me I have HSV-1 which is oral (cold Sores) and only pop up once in a while - however the pharmacy charges me a crazy amoun of $45 for like 5 pills my doctor gives me full scrips - but i only get 5-6 pills at a time... saves on cash. If you need them daily I recomend switching to generic. Walmart $4 for the whole month. good luck!"

Love Florida replied: "valtrex is very expensive, but alternatives like are much cheaper, but only your doctor and you can decide which is safe for you and which works"

If I take Valtrex without having herpes, will I protect myself better? My girlfriend has genital herpes (HSV-2) and I do not. She takes Valtrex to reduce the risk the spread of the virus to me. I do not have any STD's, but I'm thinking about getting a Valtrex prescription also, if it helps reduce the risk of me getting HSV-2 even more. Is this the case, or will taking the pill provide no extra protection to me, since I don't have an STD? Thank you. I appreciate all the answers so far. I just want to reiterate that she IS taking Valtrex to treat her HSV-2. I am NOT taking any medications, but I do NOT have the virus. If Valtrex won't help me block the virus, are there any herpes medications or antivirals that I can take, being virus-free, that would add additional protection for me? I love this girl, and we are very open and honest with each other. I'm not going anywhere - I just want to be as protected as possible while being sexually active with her. Thanks.

Dr. V replied: "nope. be sure to use condoms though."

nrginequalsnrgout replied: "It will be no help to you. The only thing you can do is create a barrier either condoms, femdom, or abstinence. Herpes has a huge stigma attached to it, but boiled down, it's just a skin condition."

Heather W replied: "Valtrex just helps suppress the virus, if you don't have herpes, it would do nothing for you to keep you protected. The ONLY protection is safe sex... remember herpes can be contracted even when she's not experiencing an outbreak."

Dark Schneider replied: "Dear concerned: If she have herpes, she's the one that need to take valtex. You should not. Valtex is a serious medicine that may have serious side effects. She should not take it regularly because it does damage to the body (possible kidney damage). She should consider alternative options. Herbal medicine/teas, epsome salt baths (sooth the pain), sauna, qi gong, tai chi, yoga. If the body is healthy, it will be able to fight off infection. If you don't have the virus, please use protection for yourself. Your girl friend is very lucky to have you. Best wishes"

LINDSEY S replied: "You taking Valtrex will not prevent you from getting herpes, doing that will offer you no further protection. It's supposed to help reduce her risk of passing herpes on. Your girl friend is the one who should be taking the meds regularly. You don't need to take it. All it will do to you is maybe cause some damage to your kidneys if you use it over long periods of time and give you some nasty side affects for no reason. As long as you don't have sex when she has any signs of an out break then you have a slightly less risk of getting herpes from her. If you have an honest relationship then she should be honest enough with you to tell you if she feels an out break coming. If you want to you can use condoms when she doesn't have an out break. There is always a slight risk of passing herpes on, if you want to have a long term relationship with her then that risk is some thing you have to consider. If that risk is too great for you then think about moving you shouldn't be treating a girl like she has the plague."

does valtrex reduce the risk of speading herpes without using a condom when you don't have a breakout? i need to know about valtrex and not giving my boyfriend herpes we don't use condoms i haven't had a breakout in over a year and have been on valtrex for 2 years

mj d replied: "no,it cuts the risk, but does not stop it altogether.you can still infect a partner, even when there is no breakout."

Alli replied: "Valtrex HELPS prevent the spread of herpes, but it doesn't guarantee it . If a person has sex with someone who has genital herpes there is ALWAYS going to be a chance they will contract the virus from them. Nothing is 100% effective in preventing genital herpes or any other STDs. Of course being on suppress therapy (like Valtrex) helps prevent the spread of the virus. Also, using condoms helps A LOT. I know you and your boyfriend say you don't use condoms, but it really helps preventing the spread of the virus. And, NEVER have sex when you are on an outbreak or think you are getting an outbreak. Genital herpes can be spread when a person is on an outbreak or not, but chances are even greater if they are currently having an outbreak. I have had genital herpes for 6+ years now. I was with my ex for almost 4 years and he never got the virus, but I was with my current fiance (boyfriend at the time) for only 3 months when he contracted it from me. I hadn't had an outbreak in almost 2 years and he still got it from me! No matter what kind of precautions a person takes, nothing totally prevents the spread of genital herpes."

Nissi replied: "it does not reduce the risk of you passing it on and you can still pass it on with out an breakout 4 out of 10 times"

Tiare replied: "it helps but it can still be transmitted. same with the condom though, condom does not completely protect against hsv."

penny b replied: "it does reduce the risk but it is still possible for the virus to still spread"

oceanlady580 replied: "it does not matter if you have not had a breakout valtrex is made to reduce the number of breakouts and you NEED to wear a condom EVERYTIME you have sex because you still carry the virus even tho you dont have breakouts. if you and your partner are having unprotected sex then he needs to go to the dr the chances are very high he has contracted the STD a well"

mama41006 replied: "ALWAYS use a condom when you have herpes. it can still spred"

Chances of my boyfriend contracting herpes if we only had sex once without a condom? I started dating this new guy and I haven't told him that I have herpes. We had sex once without a condom, and I am really hoping that I didn't give it to him. I'm on Valtrex right now, but I'm still a little worried. It was cowardly of me to not tell him straight up, I know that. I made a gyno appt so hopefully I can tell him after it. But, main question being, what are the chances of him getting it if it was only once without a condom?

Jabril replied: "about a 90% chance. jabril"

Van-Hy replied: "VERY HIGH........"

Johnathan L replied: "holy crap thats fcked up. you could ruined his life what the hell is wrong with you."

naz replied: "very high omg you r a horrible person you cant play with peoples lives like that if he got it he cant get rid of it EVER!!!"

ceierranicole replied: "99.9901-100.00% chance why would you not tell him"

Erika O replied: "Most herpes infections are spread when you don't have an outbreak. Not using a condom greatly increases the chance that your partner may become infected. You have an obligation to tell your sexual partners your herpes status. 90% they won't care, but they will make sure to use a condom. It was very wrong to A - Not tell your partner & B - Not use a barrier. For shame."

thegoodladypayne replied: "Almost 100%. That is such a vile thing that you have done. Really disgusting."

shadow272 replied: "you are so very wrong he could have charges brought up on you. so how about you go and have sex with a person that has full blown AIDS without any protection. You made your choice to have sex.whom gave it to you. did they tell you that they have herpes. how would you feel if someone gave it to one of your children. Tell him now face to face not over the phone or even in a letter. You want to have sex be responsible TELL him."

Edie replied: "100% chance he can get it. One time is as risky as a hundred times. You do not have to have visible lesions to infect someone. There is a period called shedding that lasts a few days in which you are contagious without lesions. It's a random thing. You never know when you are going to go through this period. Valtrex is not a cure. It only helps to reduce the number of outbreaks and severity when you do have one. Please tell him. He may be angry that you were not honest with him before you had sex. I would never judge you. I realize it must be a very difficult thing to tell someone. Also, on the subject of condoms. They are not effective in preventing transmission if lesions are on the groin, testicles, buttocks, or thighs."

Dead Last replied: "It spreads about 50-80 Percent of the time. If your on Valtrex the chances of spreading are 1 percent or even less. I think you will be ok =D Def let him know tho =D"

Hera replied: "Very high. Sometimes symptoms may not show up but you have it. Its quite natural that your BF will contract herpes. For herpes tretment visit"

How long is the longest time you have slept with someone using protection without passing genital herpes? For those that have genital herpes.. preferrably a female.. have you been sleeping with a guy who isn't infected and have been using just a condom and not using a daily medication like valtrex?.. if you have never transmitted it to ur partner how long have yall been together?? r u ever self conscious about spreading it..

bassdoc replied: "Me? Never. A good friend of mine got herpes the FIRST time he had sex. It was with a girl he was working with at the fast food restaurant. He was 16. He's still got it - he's 50!"

thinkaboutmoney replied: "This is a tricky question. First, I am a guy, that does NOT have genital HSV 1 or 2. I do have HSV1 (lips). This is also transmittible through kissing and then oral sex, etc.. This means you can get HSV-1 on the genitals too. The answer to your question is difficult because of the variables. First, you are not always shedding the virus. Second, you can shed virus and NOT have a breakout. Third, it depends on your partner's exposure to the virus in the past (many folks have the virus but it remains dormant) Protection helps, but is not a guarantee that it cannot be transmitted. At least the chance is less that he would have an outbreak on his "shaft" and more likely to have it somewhere else, butt area for example. There is a site with tons of information you are looking for. I cannot really answer this question completely without using a lot of text.."

lost2day replied: "I`ve been with my husband for 12 years,he has herpes 2. I don`t, we use condoms and he`s on medication. But there is always a chance regardless, he could be contagious regardless of having an outbreak or not....viral shedding. But as of yet, I`m herpes free."

What are the chances of herpes transmission btn a discordant couple w/o condoms while taking Valtrex daily? What are the chances of transmission from an infected male to an uninfected female without using condoms, when he is taking daily Valtrex?

Rach replied: "I don't know any numbers, but I have never passed it to someone and I don't take valtrex. It can only be passed if you have sores or the symptoms of herpes. (like a tingling feeling)"

Ozone6969 replied: "OK first of all, Rach is wrong and has probably given it to hundreds of poor guys. You CAN spread when not having an outbreak. In the episode of Family Guy where Peter says he won't buy a used car he tells of a guy who caught herpes twice. Great episode btw. Seriously even the commercial says you can spread it while taking valtrex. That's why I wouldn't waste my money on it. Rubbers are cheaper."

Guru replied: "15-30%, it drops to 2% if you use condoms"

Mr Goofy replied: "depends on how long you have had the virus the risk of passing it on without symptoms becomes less the longer you have it and if you are on suppressive medication this lowers the risk to 1-2 % but this is with using condoms though you can still catch herpes using condoms"

♥{Juicyyy.} replied: "Wow, lol. I take it you're talking about yourself huh? Taking Valtrex a day? That's wasting your time because you can STILL get herpes..even if you are using condoms."

Possibility of passing on oral herpes without outbreak? Hello, so I'm 16 years old and have been getting cold sores ever since I was a very little boy. Not just that, but I seem to be one of those unlucky few who are particularly prone to the Herpes Simplex virus. I get about 6 outbreaks a year, sometimes more. My frequent cold sores have caused me much psychological trauma throughout my childhood, ESPECIALLY in high school. Up until now, I have never even had a girlfriend, nor have I kissed a girl, purely because of my cold sores. Anyways, about a month ago I, along with my parents, decided that this situation I'm in is just simply not fair, and that enough is enough. We went to my doctor who took pity on me and prescribed me a popular drug called Valtrex. Basically, Valtrex is a medication containing a chemical effective in combating the virus, and is typically prescribed for people suffering from genital herpes. I'm supposed to take one 500 mg tablet a day as a preventative measure, and take 3 at 5 hour increments during a day when I feel an outbreak coming. Since I've been on Valtrex, I haven't had one outbreak. However, it's only been a month and I have gone much longer than this outbreak free before, so I don't know if it's a coincidence or not. But assuming it's working, this leads me into my current situation. I recently acquired my first girlfriend and we have been seeing each other recently. We have kissed each other a few times. I did not have an outbreak, nor did I feel one coming on at any time. However, I read somewhere that I can still be contagious even without outbreaks? Is this true? Bear in mind I'm on Valtrex, does that suppress my contagiousness in anyway? I'm incredibly worried that I might pass it on to her. If this happens, my life is totally ruined. She would never want to talk to me again, and I would probably kill myself. One more thing, kind of unrelated: approximately what percentage of American TEENAGERS are infected with HSV-1? Also, what percentage of people infected with HSV-1 are asymptomatic? Your answers are greatly appreciated, thanks.

Komil replied: "You should use valtrex, it is the best about it you can get information from here"

How easy is it to contract genital herpes? My current college roomate has genital herpes, and is taking 500mg of Valtrex daily. Is it possible for me to catch genital herpes from her without sexual contact?

WorriedAJ replied: "No. Genital herpes is skin to skin contact. You are fine."

don't sass me replied: "it is very rare for you to contract genital herpes from your roommate. The only possible way is for her to sit on the toiled off-center and her sores would touch the seat and you immediately sit down in the exact spot which is very unlikely to happen! I actually got this from a Dr which said it would have to be within split seconds that you would sit on the toiled seat after her. It is so rare, that you should not be worried about contracting the genital herpes unless you have somekind of skin to skin or sexual contact with your roommate! ***Thanks**** Maybe I cleared up an issue!"

Guru replied: "Ignore "Dont Sass Me" who has no clue Herpes are ONLY spread by direct skin to skin contact with an infected person. No ifs, no buts."

Joel replied: "No herpes is an STD and you can't get it without sexual contact."

nomore804 replied: "nope you cant get it its only from skin to skin contact just dont get drunk and mess around with her girl than you ll be ok....jk about the last part...good luck to your roomie"

Dr tracy is here to help!! replied: "Na you should be fine. Just don't use the same towels as she does. There is a possibility you can pick it up from towels like if she has an outbreak & she dries off."

Can One Buy Valtrex Online Without Seeing a Doctor? I got genital herpes from a rape so I was hoping to be able to purchase Valtrex on the internet. I found this site Is this legit? How can they give a person a prescription drug without ever seeing them in person? Is there a catch? Is it really that easy to get Valtrex? Do you know any other place in which I can purchase valtrex? I have not been diagnosed with herpes buy a doctor. However,I am certain I have it. I have spent the past week learning about the virus on the internet. I was suicidal but now I feel I can handle the virus. I just want some Valtrex and it is too humilating to go to the doctor.

CC replied: "Please don't buy any prescription drugs on the internet, this is illegal and NOT safe. You really should go see a doctor, you don't have to disclose the fact that you were raped. I'm so sorry to hear this, and I can't even imagine how hard it is for you to go through this, but doctors are here to help. They see so many HSV2 cases that it doesn't even phase them and its like seeing people with the flu. It is much more common than you would think, and they don't judge. If you would feel more comfortable, you could go into Planned Parenthood and they will give you a blood test and if it comes back positive, then they will write you a prescription. Once you have the prescription you can renew it over the phone or internet, you won't have to keep going into the doctor, but please go see one. After an experience like that you should be tested for everything to make sure nothing else was contracted like HIV or syphilis. Good luck..."

summerbrookrobyn replied: "I don't know about that website, but I use a website that IS legit. It is That is the UK site, but they also have international sites with prices in $. The price includes shipping, and I have bought repeatedly from them over several years and their products are real and service is good. I would really recommend them. And no, I am not affiliated. Just a happy customer!"

Angel replied: "sorry, never hear of them but we have been buying online for a very long time now from this site > which sells mostly generics and is based in England"

pinspeed1 replied: "depending on if your insurance covers it or not, it is waaaaay cheaper via prescription."
