Has anyone every come off Effexor and dream as soon as they fall asleep? My doctor says this is part withdrawl My doctor has gradually taken me off Effexor, and as soon as I fall asleep I began to dream. My wife says I talk and move my arms. The dreams are so real that I sometimes have trouble with knowing what was a dream and what was real. Has anyone ever had this happen to them. I suffer from bi-polar and drepression. My doctor changed my medication, but because I have been taking effexor for so long, the withdrawls are bad.

My doctor is changing my meds from zoloft to effexor.? My doctor is changing my meds from zoloft to effexor. i'd like to know from those of you who have taken it, what you didn't like about it and what you did like about it? Thank you in advance

ambrosia replied: "I did not like Effexor at all, It also ate at my stomach lining. The side affects are different for all people, I guess just try it and see how you like it. Wellbutrin was the best one for me."

tooter replied: "effexor raises my blood pressure a little. It works on the 2 chemicals in the brain while zoloft works on one. Think of Effexor as the newer version of anti-depressants or the updated version."

I have a question for people taking Effexor for depression? My doctor changed me from Zoloft to Effexor to treat my depression. I seem to be having a lot of side effects from taking it. It is making my blood pressure go through the roof, and I really feel much more depressed now. I have read that people already taking medications for high blood pressure should not take effexor. My doc is aware of my blood pressure problem, so I am wondering why he even would have perscribed Effexor. I have an appointment to talk with my doc on Monday. I just wanted to get some info from others as to what side effects they may have had, before I talk to my doctor about changing me back to Zoloft. Any info you can give me would be helpfull. Thanks

rockydriver22 replied: "Sometimes if my mother misses a few pills she has strange dreams but other than that no side effects"

ur mom replied: "I dunno about the blood pressure thing but I work for a law firm and have clients call in daily saying that certain anti-depressants (such as effecor and zoloft) have caused them to attempt suicide. Our law firm has class action law suits against many drug companies that make effexor, zoloft, prozac... I guess it all depends on how the medication reacts with your body. I would talk to your doctor and if you don't get an answer you like speak with another doctor,"

bronzediva replied: "FIRST OF ALL, YOUR DOCTOR WORKS FOR YOU! If you are having problems with the medication, tell him you don't want to take it and why. And, stop taking it. My experience with Effexor was quite different. It took away any conscience I had or normal human feelings. Since I am a type A personality, I could have gone to my job and easily gone postal--I demanded an immediate change in medication. I now have a doctor who does not make me take anything I'm not comfortable with. In other words, he acts as a partner in my mental health care, not a dictator."

olive oil replied: "I'm going to ask for a different one also because of (other) side effects. I also have been put on an ace inhibitor (for high blood pressure) after I started Effexor but I didn't realize that was one of the side effects of it, too."

firexxxangel replied: "I've been taking it for years and I've never noticed anything but dry mouth as a symptom. Infact, I swear I must have tried every anti-depressant that's out there and effexor is the only one I can tolerate really well. That's my story."

Effexor XR & Eczema - Why? I am currently tapering off of Effexor XR. I was previously taking 300mg/day and, starting June, have been slowly tapering. I am now taking ~20mg/day. Every time I reduce my Effexor dosage, my mouth becomes itchy, swollen, red, and dry. I saw a dermatologist who said it was eczema, which I've had in other places before. I'm currently treating the eczema with hydrocortisone ointment. The dermatologist didn't really have an answer for what was causing the eczema, and couldn't tell me if it was the Effexor. I doubt the eczema is caused by my toothpaste or makeup, b/c I use those daily...but I only have eczema for 1-5 days after I change my Effexor dosage. The prescribing doctor...well, doctors...have been no help. Every doctor I've had while I've been on this has told me that "no one has side effects from this medication" and that I "shouldn't be experiencing any problems." The doctor who took me down from 300mg to 225 initially tried to take me all the way down to 150mg in one jump, but I found the "non-existent" side effects (brain zaps, nausea, irritability, agitation) inconsistent with my job. If it were up to him I'd have only taken two weeks to come off of this, and I don't doubt that would have been a disaster. Googling Effexor, withdrawal, and eczema does create a few hits. But no one seems to know why, or really understand why I want to know why. So, if you have any idea, I'd be interested in hearing it. Speculation is fine with me. This is mostly an academic curiosity...although my mouth would like to know.

Billme replied: "Hi, Yes stress is the root cause of eczema in many cases. I have been helping a friend get rid of his psoriasis’ on his skin, it covers about 2 square feet of his arms and hands. He has been spraying on 2.5 PH water for about a month now, and it is working. He is also drinking 9.5 PH water. His wife has MS, and is also drinking the 9.5 PH alkaline water, and is doing much better. You can get free alkaline water - place a wanted add on Here is a demo video to watch for the eczema cure as seen in Japan. Sorry but the hospitals in the United States and Europe are not this advanced at this time. Allergies to food include shellfish, garlic, and others. Stop eating things like cheese, then milk products, then anything brewed (beer, yogurt, breads made with yeast). When it goes away, then you have some idea of what you should stop eating. Or use the process developed in Japan, and eat what you want to. Good Luck !"

Gard23 replied: "It could be be related to the antihistamine-type action of the drug - now that the dose is coming down that is lessening, and people do experience various forms of dermatological reactions during withdrawal, usually itching, but others are reported. It's interesting that it seems to be a self-limiting response after a dose drop... given Effexor's extremely short half-life, that does seem a pretty conclusive reaction. Also check-out the less well-known anticholinergic properties of the drug... e.g. mouth dryness. Or the connection between Effexor and glossitis. Or the connection between Effexor and mucous membranes. Yes, these are side-effects, but it stands to reason that they could also be triggered by the reduction of the drug since it appears common for side-effects to also be withdrawal effects."

is it safe to take effexor xr 150mg while trying to fall pregnant? whilst i was pregnant with my last child i was on zoloft from 3 months since having my daughter i have changed to effexor xr 150mg i have been told by my doctor that effexor is safer then zoloft whilst pregnant can anyone confirm this and is it safe throughout the pregnancy

Chia Pet replied: "To be honest, I think you should get a second opinion! Lets just say I work with many doctors and I rather you get another opinion, just to be on the safe side. Good luck & I wish you the best. Also congratulation with having another baby."

cjam284 replied: "I was on Zoloft and was told it is generally the safest during pregnancy and while breastfeeding but I agree with the others that you should get another opinion and maybe even stop the meds until you get either a definitive answer or one you are happy with. Also if you are asking these types of questions to strangers and don't really trust your doctor then maybe you should try to find a doctor you are more comfortable taking advice from because they do at some point have you and your child's life in their hands. Just a thought?! :)"

Don't think Effexor XR working?Doctor isn't changing it I know I'm not right? hey. I have been on Effexor XR for about 4 years or more now for panic attacks/ anxiety and depression. It worked wonders for me until about 6 months or so. I had a tough ubringing with an alcoholic and dysfunctional family. Also my boyfriend, at the age of 21 was diagnosed with lung cancer last year. its been a hell of a road when he was really sick but its beeen worth it because hes really my inspiration to get up everyday and keep going and like no one I have ever met. hes the love of my life.he went into remisssion and it has returned but very little and was caught very early. he has awesome doctors who are very on top of him. when he was really sick i was surprisingly okay, maybe because i had to be strong. anyway about 6 monthes ago or so I started to get bad anxiety and depression over it. also at exactly the same time he was diagnosed my parents decided to get divorced. anyway about 6 months ago I started obsessing over death. i feel so crazy saying that. I'm in no way suicidal its just i go through these periods where i constantly think about "Oh my god what would I do if I lost him" or I think whats the point of life if we all die one day, idk and I'll just think of life in a really depressing way like that. it's not normal to think of all the time and i hate it and don't want to think or feel like this. i really feel crazy like no one else has such an issue. i see a therapist which is helpful but i really rthink the effexor is no longer working. my old dr said all these feelings are normal and just gave me klonzapam to take as needed. i don't feel this isthe answer because its not just a period of panic its my mind and these thoughts that just won'tt slow down. now there is a new dr and hes telling me the same thing that I'm going through so much and its normal. i know i am going through a lot but god I'm sick of feeling like this its really hell and I just feel like they get it.

Model babe replied: "I suggest you smoke medical marijuana."

bone replied: "You are going through a terrible time, ask to see the doctor in charge of the whole practice, I feel you have chronic anxiety, and must be dealt with. I feel you need to be strong and well. See the head doctor of your practice first and tell him you are having racing and suicidal thoughts, tell him you are thinking of coming off you medication as you do not feel it is helping you. (Stay on the medication though)."

Has anyone had the experience of changing from Effexor-XR to Cymbalta? How did you find it? I have been taking Effexor-XR (150mg daily) for some years, and my doctor has suggested that i swap over to Cymbalta. I suffer from chronic pain and am on morphine daily, but i've read that Cymbalta is also good for reducing pain. Any ideas?

s_m_i_l_e_s_22 replied: "Cymbalta can be good for pain, but only sertain types of pain, usually neuropathy from diabetes and it can only help some. It certainly will not have effects like you morphine. Effexor and Cymbalta are in the same class of anti-depressant, so there is a good chance of cymbalta working as well, but not a guarantee."

How do I quit Effexor XR without a doctor's help? I have been taking Effexor XR, 75mg once a day, for over three years, and for the last two years I have felt happy and healthy and had no depression. I'd like to quit the Effexor, since it's expensive and my life is so much more stable than when I first started taking it. Effexor is really addictive, and the withdrawal side effects are severe and come on quickly. I get headaches, dizziness, and anxiety within half a day of missing a dose, and it soon gets really really bad. Everyone agrees that the best way to quit Effexor is to decrease your dose very gradually. But I can't get a prescription for a smaller dose. I currently live in Japan. A doctor back home in America wrote the prescription for me, and I have refills to last me a long long time. But she doesn't want to change my prescription without seeing me in person. Effexor isn't approved for use in Japan; I can import it from America, but my Japanese doctor can't write me a new prescription for a lower dose. The pills themselves are gel caps filled with little granules that spill all over when the capsule is broken, so I don't think I can physically cut the pills in two. Taking the pills every other day rather than every day doesn't help - I'll just go into withdrawal one day and then be as addicted as ever the next. So what do I do? Are there any doctors out there with advice, or anyone else who has gone through the unpleasant Effexor-withdrawal process?

brycenremtp replied: "Ask you physician in Japan about Buspar. It is in the same family as Effexor XR, but has less side effects."

grania_3 replied: "Your doctor is right. You can't do this by yourself. You have already seen how it works...you get a rebound effect when you try to slow it down. It is possible to taper using a gelcap with granules in it BUT...this is something a doctor needs to be monitoring. That is why they don't want you to do this on your own. I tried it "my way" a while ago and it was the stupidest thing I ever did. I ended up almost killing myself without realizing it. If my mother had not been aware of me tapering the drug and the emergency room hadn't been so close, I would be dead. When I talked to my doc about it, we decided it would be best to be monitored when I taper down. That way, you see the doc often and you call if anything goes weird as you taper. You and your doctor will write up a schedule/plan on how to do this. please don't do it yourself. I'm on two addicitve meds and I know how it feels to think you're ready to ditch them. Just wait until you can see your doctor."

likr k replied: "I dont want to tell you to do go off the Effexor but the choice is really yours. Even though your doseage is small you have been on it for some time so the withdrawl could be sm all or not even happen. Even though it is best to go off it at a small dose, they is rarely a does smaller then 75mg. Even though you do feel happy and you believe you have things in control sometimes that can be the medication talking but if you feel that you have your life stable and that the medication is not the reason for your happiness then I would suggest contacting the doctor and explaning the situation to her in full, tell her about the stability, and how the cost of effexor could become a strain and that you would like her assistance to help get you off it. Morally as a doctor I couldnt see her refusing her assistance for this, if she does, I would defiently contact a different doctor. Or ask your Japanese doctor advice on how to get off it, even though its not legal there I'm sure he would have enough knowledge of the medication to help."

Yada Yada replied: "It is really tough to stop Effexor XR. I was on a much higher dose of it. I lost my insurance and so I then lost my ability to pay for it. I knew it was coming though so I took fewer for a while then less for a while then I got to one pill. Meanwhile I had all those side effects of decreasing building up and felt the worst I have ever felt. TERRIBLE headaches, dizziness, all that. I ALSfO was stopping three other things, and stopping two of them could very easily have killed me at any time from my body needing them to function. Then I took the one pill about an hour or so later each day and eventually one every few days etc. And taking the pill was wonderful because it took away most of the worst symptoms. Eventually I just stopped taking them. It was bad going thru it and it took about three months or so but I got thru it. It is dangerous though, you are directly affecting your brain chemicals so be careful. Increase the time between pills. I think you can buy gelatin capsules and open the Effexor and put part of it in them and decrease that way too as long as you don't crush the granules. I did not do it that way though and it was difficult to go thru. I need to ask you though if you think that feeling NOT depressed might be worth any amount of money if you can pay it?"

crashcart9 replied: "I assume you're confident in your mental state to be able to handle going off of it, etc., so I won't bug you about that. I feel you on the addictive thing--I tapered off down to the lowest dose prescribable (37.5mg), and still was massively, massively ill for quite a while (more than a week after my last pill of the lowest available dosage). Unfortunately, I didn't do this with the Effexor, but I have done it with other pills--pop open the capsule and count how many little medicine balls are inside. Start with the entire pill like normal, but gradually take out some of the medicine balls and close the pill capsule back up (or just sprinkle the ones you want onto applesauce or something), decreasing every day. That's what's even better than pills about these capsules--totally controlable dosage. You'll have to guess on how quickly to decrease because everyone reacts to the drug differently (and it depends on how long you were on it, etc.), but if you take the time to count the number of extended release balls inside the capsule (it's time consuming, I know) and record everything you're doing, you'll be able to tell what's working and if you feel sick, be able to look and say "Oh, I decreased 5 balls this week, that was too much". Hint: if you ever do feel sick on the decrease, don't just slow down your taper--pause at the level you're at until you're used to the dosage before resuming cutting down. Or, you know, just go cold turkey like I did. But since you've got enough refills to last you, you should spread it out as much as you need to avoid discomfort. I won't lie to you, I know *exactly* why it's so hard for junkies to go without a fix now. That was rough. (Plus, I was only 14--not my best memory of the summer before sophomore year, LOL.) Based on the dosage I was at at the end of my doctor-controlled tapering (37.5mg), you'll definitely need to go more than halfsies on your pill before jumping to nothing. I'd try full pill -> 3/4 -> half -> 1/4 -> 1/8 (the last one only if possible--that's pretty hard to count out--but I remember the decrease between every step was hard but the last one was the hardest, so that should be the lowest possible)."

at my 4 month appointment yesterday, my doctor found a bit of blood in my urine. what could it mean? i asked her but somehow she didn't answer and sort of avoided (intentionally or not, i don't know) the question altogether. it doesn't hurt to pee, i'm not diabetic, i am overweight and have borderline high blood pressure, i'm on effexor (with doctor's guidance), i'm 31, this is my first pregnancy, i don't have a history of urinary tract infections and i was fine at my 1 month and 2 month visits (i didn't get my urine tested/taken at my 3 month appointment). what could this be or what could be the most likely cause of this? the doctor didn't seem especially worried (since she didn't really address the issue). is this normal? should i be concerned? i can't change doctors (in canada, free health care, doctor shortage). i do go to see an obstetrician july 23rd but i'd really rather not have to worry about it until then if i can avoid it. any help would be appreciated. thanks :)

Effexor?????? I am on 75 mg of Effexor a day for panic disorder. I am going to a new doctor and I think she will be changing my medicine. Has anyone had any bad side effects coming off of Effexor? What do you think is the best medicine for panic disorder?

lori c replied: "you will have side effects if you stop effexor suddenly, but most doctors are aware that you will have to be weaned off."

Monterey replied: "I think it depends on how long one is on a medication as to the side effects. Some people have none. I was on Effexor for awhile, and had no side effects, but everyone is different. Your doctor would be the one to know what medications would best suit you, even though it is trial and error sometimes. Tell your doctor your concerns."

SilviaTic replied: "I was taking Effexor for about 9 months and decide to leave it by myself. I did some research on the Internet and some people talked about aweful side effects. I didn't have anything at all. What I did was to cut it slowly, taking less and less every week until I finish taking nothing. If you suffer from panic disorder you should take pills AND go to a good therapist. Cognitivist are the best for panic and anxiety. Good luck"

Dee replied: "One does not usually have 'bad' side effects when decreasing antidepressant therapy, if you follow your doctor's instructions carefully. Only your doctor can best decide what that schedule would be. Only a doctor should decide what is the best medication for your type of panic disorder. Listen to your doctor. Do what she says. If you don't understand, ask. If you don't agree, get a second opinon. You are on the right track. Relax, and let the doctor help you."

Giz replied: "Why do you think your new Dr, will take you off the effexor. Maybe she will just up the dose. There is a medicine called Effexor xr to. If your not having bad side affects from it,and it seems like it just is not working for your panic then maybe she can just up the dose or give you like 1/2 mg of adivan. I'm on Zoloft 200 mg a day and klonipin 1mg at bedtime. My Dr just put me on effexor xr to. So far I am doing ok. I really don't like the idea of being on both effexor and Zoloft but shes the Dr. Best medicine for panic.Well I would tell you.But some of it is really addicting. PS: Do not take xanax it is addictive and the with draw is really bad. When you stop taking it. Good luck and God Bless"

Kat replied: "She might just up your dose to 150mg or if she puts you on a new one take it right away and you'll have no side effects. I went from Effexor to Wellbutrin and had no problems"
