Caffeine And Pain Disorders in Q&A
I know that sugar and caffeine affect my anxiety, but how about dairy & fatty foods or even salt.?? I've noticed that when I eat some fatty, dairy and salty foods, my anxiety gets worst and I get short of breath and some sharp pains on my left side chest. my doctor said it's anxiety disorder after all kinds of testing. does anybody know if this is normal? do I need to change what I eat? because i already eat healthy foods but sometimes I want to have chocolate, popcorn or cheese. Thanks in advance, your input will be greatly appreciated ~Fernando Sau.

minerva779 replied: "Most of the sources I've read said that milk, like turkey, contains tryphtophan, a chemical that causes the body to become soothed and relaxed. If anything, you might have a little hypochondria (believing so hard that something is freaking you out that it actually does cause an anxiety attack). Certain things like caffeine and sugary foods definitely can give a girl the jitters though, and I speak from experience."

Constant pain - no answers? I have constant pain in my feet and hands. Moderate to severe pain in my jaw - causes sometimes ear aches and headaches. Now the pain seems to be setting up shop in my back, one elbow and both knees. I have been seen by several doctors, reumotologist, neurologist, etc. for the past 3 years. No one has any answers or Solutions. They have ruled out lupus, lyme disease, carpal tunnel, nerve disorders and I have tested negative for Rheumatoid. They have tried several steroids, with no affect.Even an antidepressant to "rewire my brain". that did not work either. Now they just give me pain meds that i hate. I take tylenol/aspirin or motrin several times a day and an occasional hydrocodone. I don't sleep, exercise makes everything worse and my constant fatigue encourages poor eating habits. (I crave caffeine and sugar when sleepy) I have found no relief and am having more and more trouble keeping up with my 3 small children (4, 3, &1). I have come to the point where I do not know what to try next. The last word from the doctor was wait and see. uhhh!! Does any one know what it could be or what I should do? I have been told my symptoms do not fit Fibromyalgia

Why does my stomach and abdomine ache violently after drinking caffeine? History: I used to consume nothing but soda as a teenage. Soda, coffee, never water, sometimes juice. My favourite drink was coca cola and my coffee was liquid ice cream mixed with concentrated coffee goop (don't' ask... i was a weird kid)... One night i had nothing but sugar and caffeine while working an overnight shift and I had a bad reaction. I went into a panic attack. Sense then anything caffeinated makes my stomach ache so much that i can't move... i have to lay down ON my stomach. Tums helps a little, but i've noticed that the caffeine builds up gas in my stomach like crazy...and it feels like my tummy WANTs to growl, but it can't. It's quite painful. Sense then i cut caffeine out of my diet and to do so created alot of panic attacks and my now anxiety borderline panic disorder from the huge with-drawl symptoms i suffered (damn coke and coffee). So it's been a while and i drink a large glass of ice tea... an hour or two later i'm crippled in bed. I drink a coke for nostalgia reasons... i'm crippled xP I wont dare to drink coffee (although i do miss it)... and it's really annoying. If someone can explain... I know caffeine is a natural laxitive, but that's not what the experience i'm concerned with :x Also i've gone to doctors for the pain. They just give me sugar ("pain") pills and send me off. One time i went to the emergency (it hurt so bad)... all they found was an enflamed liver and sent me off after taking blood samples to check for hepitus... (which were negative). Sense then i've concluded that my liver swells sometimes with caffeine. Edit: I've had a stomach ulser before. Other things upset stomach ulsers as well, this is JUST after caffinated beverages. Now the symptoms resemble ulsers cause tums helps the pain (but doesn't get rid of it).

Drecklia replied: "maybe you became allergic to caffeine"

Bodyconscious replied: "Two possibilities, 1. an ulcer. 2. Gall Stones. In either case stop the caffeine and excessive sugary drinks. Increase your intake of a variety of fresh fruit, vegetables, and water. It might not be a bad idea to see a Gastroenterolgist to have it checked out."

Tommy Tim replied: "I know that soda often causes ulcers. It wears away the stomach lining, which would be your tummy pain. I'm not sure about coffee though."

never had a problem with caffeine...why now? i had severe heart palpitations one day and was rushed to the hospital...i was diagnosed with bronchitus, heart palpitations and alcohol withdrawal. I quit drinking since, but after the hospital it became a panic disorder due to how scared i was. I dont get anxiety attacks often anymore due to its been 7 months sober. I do get symptoms when i have stimulants like heart palpitations. Am I sick? Why cant i handle caffeine anymore? everyone says its my anxiety but im not depressed and have no stress in my life what so ever...no job or school. Everyone is breathing down my neck saying its my anxiety. I have blurred vision and pressure in my head but with no pain at all...am i hypoglycemic or something???? please help.

silky1 replied: "You are asking a lot of medical questions that can't be diagnosed on q/a. However i suggest that you seek professional medical advice. It does sound like you may have high blood pressure."

LadyLynn replied: "Some of us are just cursed with poor nerves. (myself included.) We are prone to anxiety/panic attacks, and there's not a darn thing we can do about it. For me, medication is the only thing that helps, and it really does help. I like Klonopin. I've been on it for 10 years and have not had to go up on it, which is great. Some people will recommend yoga or meditation. That may work for you. Caffeine is a stimulant. I know when I drink coffee my hands shake. Anxiety can do the strangest things to the body! If you think the blurred vision and pressure in your head is not anxiety-related, see a doctor! You need to be examined and possibly have a blood test taken. Then you'll know exactly what's going on, and that alone will ease any anxiety you think you may not be having! Bless you and good luck! :)"

simone19 replied: "it sounds like your blood pressure is through the roof."

Does this sound like a disorder or just a lot of strange qualities? There is a lot of problems, maybe separate quirks or disorders... anyways, sorry for the length and good luck figuring this one out! I used to be afraid of being touched, literally jumping into the air if someone poked me, even if it was a close friend and I expected it. I have always been a loner in the past and was the made fun of kid. I still prefer to keep everything to myself and do everything by myself, and I am my own worst critique. I don't care what anyone thinks, it is my own judgment I must pass, and I am a very picky judge. I lose my vision occasionally for a few seconds at a time and walk around not being able to see a thing (no one notices because I've learned to play it off decently and continue to talk to them). I panic sometimes for no reason, and feel like I am freezing or going to die or a heart attack, but I know it happens often (used to be every day, now only a coupe times a week) and I will be fine. When I panic, I always cry continuously for between 20 min and 3 hours, but I always make sure I am alone and no one can hear or see me so they don't worry. During this time I often think about suicide or running away (I am 19 living at home) but I do not take action because I promised myself I would never commit suicide because it would make friends and family unhappy, plus it is a waste of a life that can be fixed. I can also get extremely happy and hyper, with a surge of adventure and a love and passion for everything, but this can change quickly usually based on how others around me feel. I get very angry about small things and the word sorry means nothing to me when I am mad. I sometimes make big decisions when I am mad, like quitting my last job and breaking up with my boyfriend both regret later (when I apologized he took me back). I don't react to major things. If I am in a lot of pain I couldn't care less. I sometimes purposely cause myself physical pain to take my mind off things. If someone I am close to is in any pain, I feel it myself and end up experiencing the same thing, sometimes worse then the person with the actually sickness or pain. I don't have my license because I am terrible with directions and can’t play 3d games because my spatial skills suck. I get bored of tasks easily and have to be doing a million things at once, and I can never make up my mind what I want. A few times I have thought I've lost things only to realize I was looking right at them the whole time. (Example, looking for my shoes that I had been wearing for a year for half hour- my mum pointed them out and I was surprised to find out those were my shoes and not someone else’s.). When I try to read or pay attention in class, my attention doesn't last more then a minute unless I have had a lot of caffeine and strongly force myself to pay attention. The reason I pass my classes is because I buy a lot of caffeine right before my exams, drink it and force myself to read until I have read all the requited chapters, and my lecture notes which are just the PowerPoint slides the professors have posted because I go to all my classes and don’t hear a word of them. When I was younger, teachers tried to stream me into a special learning class (I was always staring off into space and sometimes didn't notice anyone was talking to me) but my mum took me out of it and decided to give me extra help at home. Learning the piano improved my attention, but not by enough to get through University without a ton of coffee and energy drinks. Despite my inattention, I love 3d puzzles and will not put them down until they are solved, I love to be intellectually challenged, and I am a supervisor at work who does the paperwork, payroll, and directs orders for the shift. I am very bad in groups of people or crowds and unless I know the people well I will often run off to a quiet place. I used to distrust everyone, especially guys, but now I do have a boyfriend of 3 and half years who I love very much and trust with my life. He worries about me though when I freak out. Despite what I want, I would rather make others happy, but my boyfriend asks again and again and waits to hear what it is I would like to do instead of picking what he would like. He figures it is because I don't normally get to make decisions at home and he wants me to start doing what I would like rather than what others would like. I am a psychology student, but can’t pinpoint these things about me to one particular disorder, it seems like many. I can’t get professional help because I am terrible talking to strangers and am too nervous to say anything without breaking down, and I will not let anyone see me break down. What do you think the problem sounds like to you? Edit: Thanks for the responses, but in order to be a disorder, a significant amount of impairment must be present. I cope with my inattention with energy drinks and caffeine during important jobs and tests (although unhealthy) I do get my tasks complete. Most people do not notice when I am angry because I take it out on myself rather then them, then meltdown and get over it- but when I am alone. Most people know me as very kind and happy. Would someone bipolar really be able to pull this off, or would people be able to clearly see something wrong? In making diagnoses, psychaitrists often look for childhood problems (ex ADD/ADHD) and because no one notices anything is wrong, diagnosis does not seem likely.

hey there replied: "you definietly sound bipolar and to have attention problems and anxiety."

Pammie replied: "Sounds like bipolar to me. There is medication to help you with this. As far a not wanting people to touch you that is probably a personal choice. The depression and then extreme happiness sounds like bipolar."

bluegreen40 replied: "Since you are a psych student, and have recognized all of these characteristics in yourself, you also must know that this an opportunity to get better by receiving a doctor's attention. Please, go in, talk it through, take this posting with you, or even email it prior to your first visit. It says a LOT! Hurry please. You really can't afford to miss another day of life while you feel like this."

grania_3 replied: "It sounds like you may have more than one thing going on. Sounds like you have a form of panic/anxiety disorder. I have panic as well so I know how you feel. What you're describing sounds very familiar. I thin kmore importantly that you need to contact your doctor or a counselor. it doesn't matter if you cry. I did. When I first went to a session, I cried all the time. But they're used to that. Don't be ashamed of it. You need to get the professional help because they are the only ones who are certified to find out what is going on and how to treat you to help you get better. The doc is your answer. I know it's scary and you ahve your reasons for not wanting to open up to a doctor but...it is the only way to find out what is happening to you. If you really want to find out and find out what you can do about it, you'll talk to your doctor. They have seen it all so someone who is nervous and not comfortable and may break down in front of them is nothing new or unusual. You need to do this. Once you find out what's going on, you will feel SO much better.....I know I did."

ihateaccounts replied: "i was reading your question & it sounded like you read the bipolar traits right off a website & then personalized it to your own life, lol.(you shouldn't have used all of them)but no seriously,it's bipolar.i should know.; ) im not bloody loony like i use to be though.you just know when your bipolar.the word is extreme irrationality.oh & btw since you mentioned your a psychology student, chances are you could just be experiencing a minor shift in personality.that happens to some people studying mental disorders.they believe they have problems that they really don't.anyway bipolars no walk in the park.have fun with that one."

Ian C replied: "Possible diagnoses Axis I: Panic disorder without agoraphobia, ADHD Axis II: Borderline personality disorder, schizoid personality traits About your vision loss (amaurosis fugax), it is most probably psychogenic, though it would not be unheard of if multiple sclerosis were causing this together with the mood swings and lack of concentration. You should get it checked out to be on the safe side."

blooming chamomile replied: "You would probably know more than I would, but when I first stared reading, I was thinking Asperger's but it may be because I've been reading a lot about it lately. The being alone, picked on kid, not liking to be touched could all be symptoms, right? Could the panic attacks be a form of a "meltdown"? Then I read more and considered depression, manic depression, ADHD, social anxiety disorder. Some of it could be just a normal part of who you are. Being bad with directions, looking right at something and not really seeing it--I think everyone does that at times. Please, please see someone about this. Could you take your boyfriend or a family member with you? Do they allow that? Maybe it would help to have someone you know and trust there the first time, or first few times. Good luck and I hope you do get evaluated and any treatment you might need."

Panic disorder or what? I have been having a rough time during my sophomore year of school thus far. I have been homesick and generally unhappy. On Tuesday night or Wednesday night, I experienced a little pain in my right temple when I ran. The pain increased a little whenever I moved my jaw. However, once I wore my retainer again for two days, the pain seemed to almost completely subside. However, last night, after getting some food with my friends, I experienced a heaviness of breath, feeling heated, and feeling like I had the fever. This was around 7pm, Eastern Standard Time. The same thing happened tonight and it sort of felt like my mouth and right cheek were a little numb, although I cannot be sure. I also felt very heated and a little light headed and detached. I have a serious of bad depression and have been worrying myself into a panic over the last few days regarding my former head pain. Is it possible that I have adult panic disorder or what? I also used to drink literally ten sodas idea and have only been drinking two or three small cans a day for the last three days. Could this have caused me to get caffeine withdrawal? I felt better after I had a small soda.

efxdc x replied: "Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc. Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level. But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There's this strange herb called "St John's Wort" - it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John's Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc. The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced... you have that "learned behavior" in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior - Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction... There are several other techniques to help cope them! Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to.... Extracted from Source."

SEM replied: "Panic disorder is characterized by panic attacks: sudden onset, heart pounding, sweating, dizzy, feeling like you are going to die/have a heart attack. Might be triggered by something, might not. Panic disorder is when you have to change your activities because you are afraid you'll have another panic attack (e.g., can't go to out in public). Panic and depression go together sometimes. Your physical symptoms could definitely be from the decrease in caffeine. Why don't you try decreasing your caffeine more gradually, and check in at student health."

Can a medical person help with these seemingly unrelated symptoms? Hi, I need some help because I am having issue in getting a proper diagnosis. I have seen a number of different doctors for years, but the symptoms are just getting worse. 1.) Fatigue- even though I sleep 7-8 hours a night, I am still exhausted almost every day. Excercise and/or caffeine do not seem to help. 2.) Abdominal pain- in the right hand, lower side. This is persistant most of the time, and is worsened by certain foods and positions. Diaherrea is also not uncommon. 3.) Skin rashes...This is new to the last six months. what started out as one patch of what looked like dry skin is now red, flaky, patches all over my arms and legs. 4.) Increased facial hair (I am a 26 year old woman) 5.) Depression and change in appetite (increased)...also, significant weight gain over the last three years. I have been tested for thyroid disorders and found negative. Same thing for cushings. I have a feeling all of this is related, but I can't seem to figure out how

Asalam w.do u know how fasting can actually improve your health? I read this article and it helped me learn what are the ways that fasting can improve someones health. Also on tv the sheik advises anyone with any health problem like high blood pressure ,diabetes, cholestrol to fast even during the fitr days . 1. Attitude About Juice Fasting: One key to juice fasting over water fasting is the ability to prevent ketosis (disrupted carbohydrate metabolism in response to chronic starvation) by continuously providing simple carbohydrates that are used by your body for energy and nutrition to the cells. Some individuals, however, believe that carb overload is the reason why Americans are fat. 2. Attitude about Skipping Meals: One study suggests that skipping a meal occasionally is not all that bad, especially if weight loss is a goal. However, be aware of changes in metabolic rate (see below). 3. Autonomic Nervous System: According to this article, fasting appears to have a normalizing effect on the overall tone of the autonomic nervous system. This normalization decreases possibilities for a number of issues ranging from digestive disturbances to anxiety disorders. 4. Awareness: Fasting can heighten awareness, depending upon the health of the individual, the goal for fasting and the ability to eliminate toxins from the system. 5. Back Pain: Back pains caused by muscular tightness and stress rather than from bone disease or osteoporosis may be alleviated with a lighter diet or juice fasting. 6. Bad Health Habits: In some people, fasting has helped break cravings for alcohol, tobacco, caffeine and some drug addictions. 7. Blood Pressure: Water fasting may correct your high blood pressure to a safe range within two weeks without drugs. This level of pressure can be maintained if the diet is changed rather than going back to old eating habits. This study was conducted in a controlled setting. 8. Cell Proliferation: This study, done on mice, showed that intermittent fasting slowed cell production, which also showed cancer development. Slowing down the rate of cell proliferation essentially buys time for the cells to repair genetic damage that may cause cancer. 9. Cholesterol: One study about a 30-day Muslim fast showed significant decrease in LDL (”bad” cholesterol), total serum cholesterol and serum triglycerides at the end of the fasting period. There also was a significant increase in “good” cholesterol (HDL) that showed at the end of the fast and continued to show for one month after the fast. 10. Chronic cardiovascular disease and congestive heart failure: Fasting can reduce triglycerides, atheromas, total cholesterol and may increase HDL levels. 11. Energy Flow: Through this logic, fasting enables the body to slow down to the point where the individual can listen to the body through the mind. This ‘vital force’ is clouded when the body is filled with toxins. However, one study with flies showed that the value of diminished appetite to an animal’s survival may vary with the infecting microbe. 12. Fat Mobilization [PDF]: Fasting may move the body to mobilize fat stores from adipose tissue (the fat under your skin) to consume that fat as energy. Short fasts also may protect proteins in your body with the release of a growth hormone. 13. Heart Health: The day-long, once-a-month fast many Mormons undertake as a part of their faith may help explain the lower rates of coronary artery disease in this population, according to a study presented at the American Heart Assn.’s scientific sessions in Orlando, Florida, in 2007. 14. Homeostasis: Basically, your metabolic equilibrium, or ability to heal, could undergo a change during fasting. When fasting is employed as a therapeutic measure, it changes the playing field for disease and infection. This article quotes Louis Pasteur, “The pathogen is nothing, the terrain is everything” for an argument on why fasting can be used as a cure for injury or disease. 15. Insulin and Blood Sugars: A study from the National Institute on Aging found that skipping meals frequently can help mice maintain healthier glucose and insulin levels. The study provides insight into the possible effect of fasting on glucose metabolism. 16. Life Span: The point behind this list of articles and studies is that caloric reduction, overall, is one way to increase a life span. Lower metabolic rates, slower cell proliferation and less body fat that holds toxic matter all lead to a healthier life. This translates, for many people, into a longer life. 17. Lifestyle: If you want to change your life to feel healthier and more productive, this author believes that fasting provides the pivot for that change. 18. Mental Alertness: When toxins are removed from the lymphatic and blood systems, this change improves mental clarity. Eating less also results in energy conservation, which can be used by the brain for thinking tasks. 19. Metabolism: While many people believe that a fast metabolism is key to weight loss, ramadan kareem>
