Coming Off Prednisone Resource in Questions
How do I deal with coming off Prednisone? I have been on Prednisone for the past 6 months and now that I am going off of it, I am having major issues. I've been so depressed that I have pretty much slept and laid on the couch for two weeks and everytime I try to do something I am in so much pain both mentally and physically that it doesn't feel worth the exertion. Is this typical and what should I do?

wannaknow replied: "come off slowly....if u were taking 2 a day....go down to one and then 1/2..."

Recovery suggestion for coming off Prednisone? I've gotten down to 8mg from an initial dose of 100mg this time last year. I'm having shoulder, back, knee and foot pain. Also depression from the pain and weight gain that came with the treatment. I also had 10 low dose radiation treatments, but I don't think that is causing my problems?!

eskie lover replied: "I really felt crappy coming off of prednisone, but was really worse when I was on it. I was irritable, emotional and gained a lot of weight. I didn't get depressed, I got mad and no one wanted to be around me because I flew off the handle very easily. The good news is that once you are completely off of it you will feel better. And, the weight does drop off, just eat a nutritious diet. Ask your docs what you can do to manage the pain better as you are weaning off the steriods. Good luck and hang in there!"

haythere replied: "it takes time but once you are off things will improve pred sucks I have been off and on it for about 15 years"

denise replied: "Hi I am 43yrs old and was diagnosed with Sarcoids of the lungs last year and have been on Prednisone since december 2006. I started at 40mg and and now on 2.5mg and my body is so sore. my legs, my hips, my feet. I feel like a old lady. it hurts to get up to move to bend. At the weight gain has been horrible and its arkward. I will be completely off in another week but always face the chance of going back on depending on my symptoms. but it hasnt been a pleasant year and I feel for anyone that has a illness and then have to be treated by steriods. so hand in there and stay strong, I know I am trying."

Coming off prednisone...How long does it take before you lose the weight and your skin clears up? I have been on 80 mg of steroids for Crohns disease and am tapering off...I am now down to 10mg but when i went down to 10mg yesterday i started to feel like i got into a fight and was bruised all over...My body is really achy and swollen and my face, neck, chest and back have been breakin out since being on this prednisone. How long will i feel like this for?? I also get hot flashes and sweat a lot especially at night... I am embarrased about how i look right now because my face and everything is really broken out and i look swollen and of course thanksgiving in thursday and i will be around a ton of my husbands family...Im not looking forward to this but wanted to know what other people have experienced when coming off prednisone. Thanks in advance!

JM_NYC2009 replied: "I absolutely know where you are coming from on the prednisone issue. I was on 60 mgs for about two years (for a rheumatological condition). When I tapered it was awful (felt fat, bloated, out of breath, got awful headaches and had other issues). It took me about 8 full months to feel even somewhat 'normal'. I still have days where I feel so draggy but most of the steroid moon face and body swelling is totally gone. The only thing you need to contact your doctor about is the bruising, that needs to be evaluated. It could be small vessels breaking but you need to be sure that you don't have any serious blood clotting issues from the steroids. I hope that you start to feel better sooner rather than later. Good luck."

What side effects are caused by coming off Prednisone? I was recently given Prednisone for a short time to help with nasal polyps. This isn't the first time I've taken it. The doctor kept asking if I had any trouble coming off of it last time. I didn't. What type of trouble do people usually experience? Is it anything serious? This time, I accidentally stopped abruptly. I took it for the first 5 days as I was supposed to, but instead of gradually lowering the dosage, I forgot to keep taking it and stopped all together. I haven't had any noticeable problems. It's been about 5 days now since I last took it. The reason I'm wondering is because my parents and the doctor have made a big deal about coming off of it. When I asked my parents if stopping abruptly was bad, they said yes. When I asked why, they said it was because Prednisone is a steroid. Saying that doesn't mean much to me. I really don't know much about steroids. When I tried looking it up on google, I mostly found that people were achy. I didn't find much else. I just wanted to make sure I'm not doing any massive damage... haha

Cupcake replied: "Most of the time there will be no problems coming off of it straight away but I wouldn't do it. Every person I've ever known has had to be weaned off of prednisone. You may be achy or sick to your stomach, it depends on how long you had taken the medication."

Scrippspen replied: "The Most common side effect is something called "moon face" its basically just a bloating of the face and sometimes the body most it can take a month to six months to wear off. another effect is sometimes lack of energy or the need to overeat hope this kind of helps"

Superfly_B replied: "i doubt massive damage is anything you have to worry about... and 5 days is pretty much putting you in the clear. my g/f stopped taking this abruptly and got every symptom of withdrawl/whatever it is you could imagine. you COULD have had seizures, panic attacks, drops in blood pressure, etc etc - but like i said, i think youre pretty much clear of that threat by now. you dont want to find out the answer to this, so i would recommend listening to your doctor in the future."

John de Witt replied: "After a short course (which normally isn't tapered, and people do just stop) it's not uncommon for the condition that required its use to flare a little. In your case, that would probably be runny/stuffy nose."

littleelttilmik replied: "You shouldn't really have any problem once you're not on a maintenance dose (daily dose). Short courses don't usually cause a rebound of symptoms. If, for example, you had sarcoidosis and were on a dose of prednisolone for a year, then if you abruptly stopped taking it eg car accident, and no one knew you were on it your body would have difficulty producing its own steroids to treat your stress and you might die. Typically, if you carry a steroid card/bracelet you'd be put on i/v hydrocortisone 100 mg four times daily to mimick the levels your body produces under stress- yes, your body can itself produce the equivalent of 80 mg prednisolone/day after a severe accident!!! Does that put your steroid use in perspective???"

Whats it like coming off Prednisone after using it for an extended period of time? In my case 3 months on 20 mg

gangadharan_nair replied: "Please see the webpage for more details on Prednisone. Do not stop taking prednisone without talking to your doctor."

Shir_Le replied: "Never just stop taking Prednisone. Your doctor will step you down gradually until you no long need the medication. Following his directions for tapering down, you shouldn't have side effects."

LeE replied: "I've taken it for ulcerative colitis a few times, for the same period of time. I found my moods were up and down on prednisone and I couldn't stop eating either, so when I came off it my appetite normalised and I wasn't getting the mood changes. I also got little red bumps on my back when I was taking it, which disappeared after a couple of weeks when I stopped it. Apart from that I felt pretty much the same as I did without it."

Opus replied: "Your Dr will need to set up a tapering schedule for you - you've been on it too long to just stop "cold turkey". If done right, you won't notice anything and will just get back to "normal"."

SouthernKNC replied: "I have been on it for almost 8 months in the past. Make sure that you gradually stop taking it. You should notice a few things like: you are not as hungry as normal (with me, I was always hungry) and hopefully some of the extra wieght will come off. My hubby also noticed that I wasn't nearly as moody as I have been in the past. Or you may notice nothing different. Good Luck"

Ulcerative colitis, coming off prednisone seems to have produced a flare up. Is this normal? My husband was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in October, and its been a roller coaster ride ever since. He is on asacol 1600 mg per day and just finished a round of prednisone starting at 50mg and coming down one pill or 5 mg per week. He finished on Thurday and now (Monday morning) he is running to the washroom ever 20-25 minutes. He is upset, his employer is upset, and I feel I don't know what else to do to help any more. Is it normal for this to happen does any one know? As soon as I can call the doctor or pharmacist when they open I will, but till then can any one give me some piece of mind or perhaps share a similar experience?

Shannon C replied: "sounds like a flare up. he should watch his diet and stress levels. sounds like you are supporting him. It's common for people to have flare ups. Sorry his employer isn't as supportive or understanding. Maybe if they had to go through the same thing as your hubby they would. The doctor may want to see him or will call in meds. In the mean time make certain that your husband isn't passing blood. Sometimes the intestinal lining can become irritated. If this happens go see a doctor asap. Hope he feels better. It may take awhile for his body to adjust to meds. Avoid spicy foods and stress. Good luck."

Brian R replied: "Speaking as someone who also suffers from Ulcerative Colitis, this is a flare up. It sounds like you are very helpful and supportive of him which is great. I am currently in a flare up and know how difficult it can be. At my worst I was running to the bathroom twenty times a day. It takes a toll on your body. It is a vicious cycle because stress can effect it, but the more you go the more stressed out you can become. It is normal that he is going through a flare up. I suggest that he keep a journal of everything he eats and drinks for a month. By seeing what foods bother him, he can avoid those as much as possible. Everyone is different. I know that spicy foods, foods with thick cheese, and chocolate bother me so I try to limit it. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to e-mail me. I know how difficult it can be and will give you as much information as I can. Hopefully his flare will end shortly. Brian"

Are these normal side effects after coming off PredniSONE? I'm 19 years old, and I've always been a healthy person. I've never really had any bad reactions to drugs, and no real health problems except a few broken bones in my life. I had really bad poison ivy. It was everywhere. They usually gave me a steroid cream when I had poison ivy in the past, but the doctor said I couldn't use the cream on the areas that the poison ivy was on. So he gave me PredniSONE. The dose he gave me was 6x10mg in the morning for 4 days, then 4x10 mg in the morning for 4 days, then 2x10 mg in the morning for 4 days. The first 2 days I was on it, my legs felt awful. I could barely walk to the bathroom, and my knees would sometimes just give out on me. It felt kinda like my legs were in a vice, especially the shins. The next few days were fine, except my legs cramped up on me a LOT when I went on my run. During the last 5 days or so on it, I had a lot of trouble sleeping, and got maybe an hour of sleep every day, until the weekend, when I slept all day and all night, except for waking up to eat and use the bathroom. I finished it last week monday, and the day after I finished it, my knees started popping every time I tried to go on my run. I stopped running for a while, and it's still getting worse. If I lie in bed, my knee starts pulsing, and it feels like my knee cap it grinding against something- I don't see how this could be happening since PredniSONE is used to treat arthritis, not cause it. Once or twice a day(for the past 3 days), my right knee gives out on me, and I have to sit there a while until I have the strength to get up again. My left knee feels like my right knee did 5 days ago. This morning, I woke up with chest pain, and I can feel my heart beat. I'm not TOO alarmed about this, because I researched that PredniSONE can cause acid reflux, but I've been off it for over a week, so if it's still hurting when I wake up tomorrow, I'm going to the University Med Clinic. One other side effect that I noticed: sometimes at night, when I'm laying in bed, my ear suddenly starts ringing. Then it goes away in a few minutes. Just thought I'd mention it too. Are these normal side effects? The things I research online seem very biased, because the entire page is usually people against PredniSONE. I need to know, because if they're normal, temporary side effects, I think I can tough it out for a few more days. But if they're serious side effects, I'll make an appointment with the Med Clinic tomorrow. Thanks for reading this, I know it's long, but I am really nervous about it, since I've never had any problems like this before.

PJ replied: "You should check with the doctor. Be sure to mention the change in your knees. Good luck."

Muscle spasms under ribs while tapering off prednisone? I am in the process of tapering my prednisone dosage down to get off of it. I was up to 40 mg per day and now I'm at 30 mg per day getting ready to go to 25 mg per day. The problem is that I am having SEVERE muscle spasms under my rib cage, both sides, and they are excruciating in nature. I can't move and barely breathe when these are happening. Is this normal when coming off prednisone? I have had broken ribs on both sides in the past. Could this maybe be the cause of these spasms in addition to the withdrawal of prednisone? Please help...I'm very concerned. Thank you!

redrock replied: "Normal ! This is normal when tapering off of this steroid. The problem is, you need to go back up an increment so that the muscle spasms stop. I would contact your dr and tell him that you're going through Prednisone Withdrawl Symptoms. He will or at least SHOULD, up your dosage just a very small bit, so that the spasms go away. Then you need to taper off SLOWER than before or you will end up with spasms in other parts of your body. I had this trouble years ago, and the muscle spasms were so bad that I needed help from my mom to be able to sit on the toilette. Horrible experience. Also, try drinking anything with calcium in it and also eat bannanas."

I am just coming off of prednisone. My question is if my height will start to go up again.? I am 15 years old and have been weaning off of prednisone for 2 months. I was on 50 mg but started weaning off by 5mg everyday. Tomorrow is my last day of taking prednisone (thank god!). I was wondering if I'll continue growing normally after. I just started high school and I'm only 5'3" (screw crohn's disease..) and I look like i'm in grade 5. My voice has yet to change and my face is that of a 10 year old. I need to know when these changes will start to happen. It's so frustrating. Also, is there anything I can do to help these changes happen?

b_bardi99 replied: "talk to your Dr,ask him to send you to a specialist:endocrinologist dr. at 15 you should be going through puberty, but its possible that the prednisone prevented it. The specialist may give you HGH (growth hormone) injections."

I need help getting off prednisone because my adrenal glands are not kicking back in. Is there help for me? I have been on pred. for 10 yrs+, I take it for lupus, but I am in remission and can come off it if My body will let me. I get real sick when I try to come off it or decrease it.

Constance B replied: "I was taking sometimes up to 100mgs. of Prednisone daily for cancer treatment. They will have to taper you down gradually, and the sickness will not be fun ( it wasn't pretty when they finally took me off the stuff). In my case the Prednisone had made me gain more than 100 pounds. What your doc ( I take it that you either have and endo/ internal medicine or a rheumatologist) might do is put you on some other type of anti inflammatory ( NSAID, like Mobic) for awhile, because it has some of the good properties of Prednisone with out the steroid effect."

Deliah replied: "I feel what you are going through and having been on it for 10 days once I can not even imagine the withdrawal of 10 years. Has to be done very slowly by decreasing the amount you take each day. You really need to coordinate this with your Doctor who is prescribing the medication. Very crucial step."

dancesportdiva replied: "I have Lupus too and have been on Prednisolone for over 3 years. Everytime I have tried to reduce the steroids my red blood cells drop to dangerously low levels. I have just started on Plaquenil with the view to going off Prednisole soon. I can't wait. Hopefully I can lose some weight once I'm off it. Are you on any other meds? Have you tried any other meds before? Do you have a good Rhuematologist? Being on Prednisolone for such a long time must be hard, 3 years is bad enough. I couldn't go onto anything else whilst I was trying to get pregnant and having my baby. Have you had any side effects from the drugs?"

being replied: "Basically steroids are made to kill the immune system...a system that is there for your body to combat disease. If you knew the full story of these drugs and corporate medicine, it would make you panic. You must withdraw from it yourself and nourish the body by first finding a recognised naturopathic practictioner in your area. Do your research on the net . Now you are experiencing temporary withdrawals while you stop taking these steroids.. Do all you can now to nourish the body...stop all junk and processed foods and SUGAR. Go organic. Theres a new movement out there because corporate medicine is doing so much harm. The net can get you on your way by asking the right questions."
