Drug Detox For Effexor Information in Questions
48 hour detox from Effexor to Zyprexa? I've been on Effexor for over a year now, varying between 75mg, 150mg and 225mg dosages. While I thought it was working fine, people around me have started pointing out symptoms that indicate I'm not so fine after all. So basically my doctor reviewed the medication and wants to switch me onto 2.5mg Zyprexa once daily. I really don't care what I'm on so long as I'm not suffering from severe (suicidal) lows. What concerns me is the 48 hour detox he said to take between Effexor and Zyprexa. I know from times when I've missed one dose that I don't handle missing dosages well. My reactions have ranged from hives, nausea, vomitting, fainting spells, blurred vision and dizziness, headaches, and a general flu-like feeling. What I worry about is if I go through this for 48 hours, then start Zyprexa, am I still going to go through the side effects of the new drug as well as the withdrawals from Effexor? If anyone has experience with this, I'd love to hear. :o) Thanks all. Just further to add: my state of mind was sort of 'updated' from depression to bipolar. Apparently the highs and lows had always been present for me. It was only noticed by others - NOT by me, so it took my mother physically being in the room with the doctor to have a whole new change. Oooh, and it should read Effexor for 2 years not 1. :o)

luvacat3 replied: "That is a REALLY weird med change, unless you have a really long psychiatric history where you have tried a bunch of drugs already, or he has changed your diagnosis to schizoaffective disorder. Zyprexa isn't usually used for depression, and it is used for bipolar, but is usually one of the later drugs to try, if you have failed on a few others. Is your doc a psychiatrist? If not, I think you need a new doc - this sounds REALLY weird to me. I have been inpatient a lot, had many acquaintances & friends with severe mood disorders, and never heard of anything like this. It sounds like your doc has been suckered by the drug rep, is what I think. A lot of people gain 60 lbs on this medicine, or even more! Not everyone does, and you can stop it if you notice dramatic weight gain (this problem was not known about years ago) but still - it is not usually an early drug to try. I'm supposing you forgot to ask your doc about the withdrawal effects. I think you should call the doc tomorrow and ask what to do. Maybe you can taper off the effexor over a couple weeks, then start the zyprexa. but it sounds like you are in a crisis, and he/she wants you to switch quickly. I guess the effexor must interact with the zyprexa is why he/she is doing this (a lot of drugs do interact). Good for you that you are listening to your loved ones - a lot of times, they can tell you are not doing well, better than you can yourself. Whatever you do, don't make med changes without talking to your doc - I am just another psychiatric patient, not any kind of professional - if you are wondering about the zyprexa, then ASK the doc why he/she picked that drug, an antipsychotic, when you have depression (perhaps you are very agitated, antipsychotics are frequently used for that, even if you don't have psychosis) and why you are not going to be on any kind of antidepressant or mood stabilizer anymore. Zyprexa would normally be an add-on drug for a mood disorder, not the sole drug, and it would be a drug that would be normally tried after many other drugs were tried. good luck!"

untreatableonline replied: "48 hour detox would more than likely be hell on earth unless you have not been taking it for very long. To come off of Effexor properly normally takes a couple of months. I agree with the other poster that Zyprexa is terrible for the weight gain side effect, I gained over 80 pounds in under six months while barely eating. Also Zyprexa is an antipsychotic where as Effexor is a antidepressant two completely different drug classes. 2.5mg is the lowest dose possible and from what you describe does not make a lot of sense. When i was of Zyprexa I was taking Effexor, Wellbutrin, Lithium and temazapam. The only reason zyprexa was prescribed is I had trouble with psychosis. The symptoms you are describing is what is known as discontinuation syndrome which happens when a med like effexor is stopped to quickly, heck Effexor warns you about this on their literature with the med."

Should not pharmaceutical companies be responsible for helping people detox from their drugs? If the medication does not work as it should, but it causes extremely debilitating withdrawal symptoms, should not the makers of the drug be held responsible for detox therapy? I am referring to SSRI's, like Effexor, Lexipro, Paxil, Zoloft Wow, armed. we wouldn't need insurance companies if everyone thought like you. Have you ever heard of a Ford Pinto? here you go parker >
Nick R replied: "All of the drug companies talk of discontinuation syndrome, but it is you and the prescribing doctor's resposibility to develop a taper schedule once you agree collaboratively to get off the drugs. Not everyone responds the same way to stopping these meds"

Armed replied: "Thats lke asking if automobile comapnies should be responsible for accidents, or if McDonalds should be responsible for fat people. We are beyond the era where the drugs being prescribed to us are ambiguous. We can research any drug on the market and we are given ample info on the meds. Including the ways we are to taper from the drug. There is no way to tell how you will react to SSRI's until you take them. So YOU chose to try it and it didnt work. You could have just as easily not taken it. Ultimately it is your responsibility to work out the best treatment with your doctor. There are too many differences between us as individuals for any doctor or pharmaceutical company to account for. There are things you might be allergic to and not even know until you come in contact with it or swallow it. A psychiatrist is the best person to get treatment from, although many people still go to thier general practitioner for treatment. The main problem with your question is that every drug you take is a balance of side effects and benefits from the drug. You literally detox from every drug you take, the difference is some people feel it and some dont. I came off of 20mg of Lexipro a day cold turkey with no withdraw. I have a stronger withdraw from caffeine than anything else. This is why you and your doctor formulate a plan together to find whats best. My little sister is allergic to all forms of antibiotics, does that mean we sue the drug companies for providing antibiotics that she is very reactive too? I was on morphine for a surgery for several days and felt like crap when I detoxed from it, but without it I would never have been able to have the surgery. The Cipro I was on caused a nasty skin rash, but I really needed it so I just dealt with it."

Madame Morticia replied: "Why would pharmaceutical companies want people to "detox"? That might mean no longer having a need for the drug! Why do you think every little negative thought or feeling nowadays is characterized as a "mental illness" "disorder" or "depression"? It's so that pharmaceutical giants can push drugs no one really needs. Guess what? Drugs are the new cigarettes."

parkermbg replied: "Armed has it right! I'd like to add that if we held those companies responsible or liable, our medication costs would triple! (My medication bill is already high enough thanks!)"
