Pre-employment drug test - question? The employer (a pharmacy) told me that after the drug test, I would get something in the mail that I'm to bring into the employer who will officially hire me. I've never done it this way before, though. Shouldn't they send the results directly to the employer? Are all businesses different? I only glanced at the form, but they had the employer's corporate address on there. Maybe they send the results to them first, then I get something in the mail? It's been two days and I haven't heard anything - I don't expect not to pass it, but I just want to get the ball rolling. I don't remember how much time it took in past tests. Also, will prescription drugs like Lexapro show up on this?

Computer Guy replied: "They are giving you the chance to not show up if your drug test reveals illegal drug use. I know you are anxious, but the wheels of industry grind very slowly. Some prescription medicines will show up on drug tests, but if you have a doctor's prescription for something, be prepared to explain it, they cannot hold that against you. Grandpa"

I haven't used cocaine, but tested positive for pre-employment drug test! HELP!? Is there anything else that could make me test positive? It was a simple urine test by the way. I take Adderall (which came up as amphetamines, but I got that straightened out), Wellbutrin, Lexapro, and Lortab. I also have taken an anti-biotic for an infection recently but don't take that all the time. I've already quit my job so if I don't get the job I tested for then I'm friggin' screwed!

Monica replied: "Did you eat anything with poppy in it? Poppy can trigger it."

Just a person replied: "my sugesstion is to talk to that employer ad tell them what you are taking legaly and see if any of those or a combination might have triggered the test. Also is there any chance someone slipped you some that you didn't know about?"

Zipporah B replied: "Do you eat a lot of poppy seeds?"

Sam T replied: "ask your doctor if any of the medication you're currently taking could be misread as cocaine on a drug test. also, if you're a fan of poppy seeds (e.g. poppy seed bagels), in large enough quantities they've been known to turn up on drug tests as opioids."

Jessika replied: "Poppy seeds come up as opiates! Not cocaine ! Consult the company that failed your drug test and let them know which drugs you are taking so they don't think your a drug addict testing positive for meth and coke !"

jackie replied: "Poppy seeds.."

Danny B replied: "I really don't know what would make you test positive for any drug, but I might be able to help if you get a job if you don't get the one you're after. Try or call 1-866-264-jobs (5627). and put down that you were referred by S/O Danny Broomfield out of branch #048N0 in Houston, Tx. Trust me, this job does have some good benefits."

brendy m replied: "It is true if you had eaten anything with poppy seeds as shown on a tv show the results on a test after eating the poppy seed. I have heard of urines getting switched on accident. Like people are saying talk to your doctor and tell him your situation. Could be in any of the medication you are taking. I just read a source that is similar to your problem. lab has to be accurate also the test checks for benzoylecgonine in your system. check if that is in any of your prescribed meds. Another posibility is could someone had messed with something you ate? I had a friend overdose at a party from shrooms on a pizza one time."

Veritatum17 replied: "Looking at the drug combination you're taking, I'm not surprised that your test came back positive. Let me explain: Consider that cocaine is an serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and dopamine reuptake inhibitor (DARI) like Wellbutrin; its also a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (NARI) like Lexapro, and an opioid like Lortab. In other words, the urine test is looking for evidence of generic compounds that act upon specific parts of the brain; while it is common to find one interaction, you've got four. That's what makes it really difficult to say "yeah, that positive is false. I'm taking four meds that cover it." The medical testing companies generally hire techs to look over the results, and these techs are more concerned with following procedure than with advanced knowledge of pharmacology - and that's what they need to be. But it doesn't help people who take multiple drugs with multiple psychotropic impacts. The major difference between the medical cocktail you're taking and cocaine is that none of these medications are known to act on the mesolimbic reward pathway, which is where cocaine is addictive. It's also where dopamine and serotonin are commonly found, both of which are naturally occuring, so its not the sort of thing one can test for and say "ah! there's drug use!" One thought is to offer to pay for your own test by another company, and call around to companies, tell them what medications you're on, and ask if these can be screened out. If not, you'll want to talk with your doctor about altering your medication. I'm not a medical professional, but I'd honestly ask your doctor or doctors to alter your treatment if at all possible anyway. You have four very powerful psychoactive medications going through your body, I have to wonder if there's some way to taper down to one or two. I mean, Lexapro is recommended where SSRIs aren't effective - maybe your doctor will consider tapering you down from Wellbutrin? Don't adjust your doses without talking with your doctor first, though. I had a buddy who did and he ended up catatonic for two days. The antibiotic should have no impact, though to avoid interactions, make sure you fill all your scripts at the same pharmacy, or at least notify each pharmacy you use of each medication you use. Lastly, it won't do much good to simply present a doctor's note (even hard research out of JAMA) that says that your combination of drugs can cause a false positive. A company isn't going to scrap its drug testing program because a combination of fairly routine drugs will give false positives. They will scrap it if there are false negatives, mind you, but to be more safe means that there are fewer legal risks, and that's the entire bloody point of drug testing. Good luck in your job search."
