When a physician writes a prescription for Lexapro how many refills does the law allow? How many refills can a doctor write in a legal prescription of the medication Lexapro? I don't mean that I can't read a label. =) I mean according to the FDA and/or federal, state, and local government law how many refills is a doctor allowed to write on their prescription pad for the medication I mentioned?

lil bit replied: "It depends on the State, I believe. One doctor wrote me enough refills(not Lexapro though) that would last 6 months or longer (that was in Florida) I would think that would apply to all meds."

amariel replied: "It's the insurance company, not the legal system. Insurance companies are funny about paying for these drugs, especially Lexapro because it's quite expensive."

Single Worker 1230 replied: "Depends on the doctor and the laws of the state. Most psych write prescriptions for the least amount until the patient is stable to decrease suicide risk. I get my meds 3 months at a time now. It used to be week by week."

Tyler replied: "Lexapro is not a controlled substance and is not under tight regulation by the DEA. Check with your doctor/pharmacist, or check local state/municipal laws on refill information. Refills in Virginia expire 6 months after the drug was prescribed, whether it is controlled or not."

hasse_john replied: "The prescription itself tells you how many refills are authorized. (it says "refill x times". --or the equivalent)"

Paul A replied: "A lot of it has to do with insurance, my doctor wants to write a prescription for one refill of Lexapro between visits with him - and he has to break it down in 30-pill increments because of insurance. I don't know about laws that limit the number of refills, there are people who are on medications permanently - although they may have to get them renewed periodically (maybe in case they pass away and someone gets the refills to abuse the medication). That's an interesting question!"

Lea replied: "Lexapro is a non-controlled medication, and thus its regulation falls to the states. In most states, there are no max number of refills in the year the prescription is legal."

I ran out of lexapro, how do I get it refilled while I wait for my next prescription? I ran out of lexapro yesterday, and I won't be able to get a prescription until at least 4 days from now, is there a way I can get a temporary refill at the pharmacy?

phishsbabi replied: "Call your doctor and ask if they can call in enough to the pharmacy for the next 4 days until your new prescription arrives."

spoon replied: "call your doctor and tell them that you need those extra pills. and have them fax your pharmacy."

thejoker8301 replied: "some pharmacies will give you an emergency supply to hold you over until your doctor gets back to the pharmacy with refills...but only if its a maintenance medication...just ask the pharmacist...Im sure he/she will be willing to help..."

Lea replied: "If you have gotten filled at my pharmacy several times before, I would consider giving an emergency fill. However, those pills will be taken out of your next refill. I'll only give you 3 or 4 at a time."

will the pharmacy charge me for an emergency refill? I needed an emergency refill for Lexapro. I have insurance, and with it a full 30 days is usually 20 bucks. will they charge me for the emergency refill??

david scott m replied: "they may give u one or two but contact your doc for more"

Idreesa replied: "It's not the pharmacy, its your insurance. Contact your insurance provider and they will let you know the co-payment."

foofy replied: "depends on the pharmacist on duty if he/she will give you a day or two until your doctor office can approve any refills"

peanut replied: "yes they will charge you"

Lea replied: "They'll charge you when you pick up your true refill. They'll only give you about 3 pills."

Is nausea a side effect of stoping Lexapro? I was taking Lexapro but haven't gotten my prescription refilled. I was taking 10 milligrams a day. I have been feeling sick the past couple days. Could that be a side effect of my anxiety coming back and also a side effect from stoping the medication suddenly?

Ginger1 replied: "Welcome to drug withdraws. They say you don't get addicted to these meds but yes you do and now your body is in detox from the drug. There are natural ways to deal with anxiety, taking these RX meds are making you dependent on them and you aren't dealing with the real reason for your anxiety."

Shan Bokhari replied: "Nearly every medicine of it's class SSRIs cause nausea either when you start taking it or suddenly stop and symptoms return upon going cold turkey. Even if you didn't take it again, your anxiety would return but the nausea would go away within a few days - its the most common side effect. Will clear up once you get your perscription refilled, at 10mg you seem sensitive to the stuff too so that has something to do with it."

When do you refill a prescription? Well, I was prescribed lexapro which you take one tablet a day and the bottle has 30 pills in it. The day that the last pill will be taken falls on a saturday though so is it ok to go to the pharmacy before that? Will they still refill it even if there are a couple pills in the bottle? And what all do I need to bring with me, just the bottle? Thanks, I appreciate your help.

Diane A replied: "yes, they will refill it for you--fabulous that you are thinking ahead! Go to the pharmacy that filled the original Rx. They will have the Rx on file, but taking the bottle is still a good idea."

josh d replied: "Read your bottle. It will tell you on the bottom what the refill regulations are. If there are a couple of pills remaining and you are regulated to receive refills..just take them out and drop it off...They will ask no questions..."

murrayc replied: "Most pharmacies you can call in a renewal and then pick it up. I wait until I am down to a one week's supply just in case the pharmacy is out of stock and need to reorder it."

thepetmomma replied: "Yes, if your pharmacist is nice they will. Generally speaking, if you are planning to go out of town, for example, they are willing to fill your prescription early. The only time they will refuse (and it's rare) is if the medication is a controlled substance."

allenbmeangene replied: "I'm on Depakote on and Zonisamide and I frequently have to have both prescriptions refilled on a monthly basis. Here's what I have to do from month to month: 1.) I call the pharmacy. 2.) I let them know the prescription number. 3.) I confirm my telephone number. 4.) I tell the pharmacy about when I will pick up my order. 5.) I pick it up. Then again, my pharmacy is one which is open 24/7. The prescription number is on file at the pharmacy, so you don't absolutely HAVE TO bring the bottle, but it might be a good idea nonetheless."

How do you refill a perscription? My Lexapro bottle will be empty soon, does my doctor need to write me a new perscription for it? Cause she didn't... or can I just go to the pharmacist? Thanks for helping.

KavaD replied: "Call your pharmacy, the number should be on the bottle. And give them the RX number. If you don't have anymore refills on it, they'll call your doctors office to get authorization to fill it again. If your Doctor wants to see you again for a med check, he'll usually fill it enough to give you time to come in for a recheck."

Susan Yarrawonga replied: "Prescriptions often contain a provision for several repeats and each repeat is usually enough for a whole month. If there is no indication of a repeats option on the original prescription then you have to see your doctor each time for a further prescription. Some prescriptions need to be reviewed every month and don't have a repeats option."

Are there any reliable websites to refill or purchase new prescriptions online, without insurance? My health insurance has lapsed and until I renew, a visit to the doctor's office and any prescribed medication has become very pricy...(I just spent 130$ for a months worth of Lexapro, to give you an idea). I was just wondering if there was a reliable U.S. pharmacy where I could purchase my norco online. Thank you in advance.

StanS replied: "I get dozens of spam emails every day wanting to sell me prescriptions. It is illegal for a pharmacy to sell prescribed medications without a doctors prescription."

bodmodangel replied: "There is no reliable pharmacies that will give out medication without a valid prescription. It is illegal and you will just be buying some very dangerous version of the drug that is not effective and a complete waiste of money. Try your local free health care clinic (www.freeclinicassociation.com) They could help you get your meds for free until you get insurance again."

I haven't got a refill on my antidepressants for more than 2 days. Is that okay? I'm 15 by the way, and I'm on Lexapro.

♡Char replied: "no. u need to take these routinely. dont miss any doses this could affect your seretonin level"

dead_man_a666 replied: "well...ur 15, so that is puzzling why ur taking antidepressants but, im not a doc. its usualy not good to miss any dosses, and keep to routine but if you feel better without them, good just talk to your parents and doctor about this - maybe you need them, or u dont"

Jaysus replied: "Lexapro or any other anti-depressent should NEVER go without being refilled. Some of the common side effects of stopping your meds (aside from the issues that the meds were helping) with something like Lexapro involves an electric shock feeling through the body, higher levels of depression as well as dizziness. Those aren't symptoms that you want. Being 15, you should let your parents know that the med is out so that they can refill it as soon as possible. You never want to stop a med unless the doctor has ordered you to stop. It can have many more side effects than what I listed, some more serious."

Why won't medicaid pay for my prescriptions? I have been trying to get my lexapro 20mg filled at the Crab Orchard Pharmacy. But it turns out that my medicaid won't pay for my prescription. I don't understand why. On the computers it said that I hadn't gotten Lexapro refilled since May, but I know I have gotten it refilled even after May. The last month I remember getting it filled was in September. And I don't know why their computers are showing that I hadn't gotten it filled since May. Can someone please explain this to me?

chickenhawk replied: "Medicaid wont pay for it because there is no generic brand and they make you buy generic brands because they are cheeper"

texjeff111 replied: "Medicaid pays for what is listed on their formulary and this is always changing. When there are several medications in a classification such as an anti-depressant often ones having a generic are covered and sometimes what is called a prior-authorization must be done to get some of the others covered. This means the doctor must submit additional information to medicaid in order for it to be covered. This is time consuming and a hassle for the doctor and often they won't do it. Usually they change it to something covered. Sometimes certain drugs are just not covered. You need to call medicaid to see it Lexapro is covered at all. With the thousands of drugs out there, neither the doctor or the pharmacy will know just what is covered. Each state has a different formulary."
