pp replied: "Testosterone is a steroid hormone from the androgen group. In mammals, testosterone is primarily secreted in the testes of males and the ovaries of females, although small amounts are also secreted by the adrenal glands. It is the principal male sex hormone and an anabolic steroid.
In men, testosterone plays a key role in health and well-being as well as in sexual functioning. Examples include enhanced libido, increased energy, increased production of red blood cells and protection against osteoporosis. On average, an adult human male body produces about forty to sixty times more testosterone than an adult female body, but females are, from a behavioral perspective (rather than from an anatomical or biological perspective), more sensitive to the hormone. However the overall ranges for male and female are very wide, such that the ranges actually overlap at the low end and high end respectively. There are many routes of administration for testosterone. Forms of testosterone for human administration currently available include injectable (such as testosterone cypionate or testosterone enanthate in oil), oral, buccal, transdermal skin patches, and transdermal creams or gels. In the pipeline are "roll on" methods and nasal sprays. The original and primary use of testosterone is for the treatment of males who have too little or no natural endogenous testosterone production—males with hypogonadism. Appropriate use for this purpose is legitimate hormone replacement therapy (testosterone replacement therapy (TRT)), which maintains serum testosterone levels in the normal range.
However, over the years, as with every hormone, testosterone or other anabolic steroids has also been given for many other conditions and purposes besides replacement, with variable success but higher rates of side effects or problems. Examples include infertility, lack of libido or erectile dysfunction, osteoporosis, penile enlargement, height growth, bone marrow stimulation and reversal of anemia, and even appetite stimulation. By the late 1940s testosterone was being touted as an anti-aging wonder drug (e.g., see Paul de Kruif's The Male Hormone). Decline of testosterone production with age has led to a demand for Androgen Replacement Therapy.
To take advantage of its virilizing effects, testosterone is often administered to transmen as part of the hormone replacement therapy, with a "target level" of the normal male testosterone level. Like-wise, transwomen are sometimes prescribed anti-androgens to decrease the level of testosterone in the body and allow for the effects of estrogen to develop.
Testosterone patches are effective at treating low libido in post-menopausal women. Low libido may also occur as a symptom or outcome of hormonal contraceptive use. Women may also use testosterone therapies to treat or prevent loss of bone density, muscle mass and to treat certain kinds of depression and low energy state. Women on testosterone therapies may experience an increase in weight without an increase in body fat due to changes in bone and muscle density. Most undesired effects of testosterone therapy in women may be controlled by hair-reduction strategies, acne prevention, etc. There is a theoretical risk that testosterone therapy may increase the risk of breast or gynaecological cancers, and further research is needed to define any such risks more clearly.
There is a myth that exogenous testosterone can more or less definitively be used for male birth control. However, the vast majority of physicians will agree that to prescribe exogenous testosterone for this purpose is inappropriate. But, perhaps more"

is there anything I can take to make me more masculine, something like male testosterone? I want to have chest hair and a deeper voice and I want to be more manly.
Lavern replied: "Friend, think of all the ways you are already manly. I am sure there are plenty of them.
If you are a young guy yet, you have plenty of time to develop a deeper voice or grow chest hair. (And by the way, a lot of men have a good crop of hair on their chests but they do not ACT very manly.)
It is a dangerous thing to be caught up in the North American/European cultural belief that a man must be hairy to be masculine. Don't fall for it. It is not true. Don't let such a false belief about manhood ruin your opinion of yourself as a man."
stargazer replied: "I agree with Lavern's answer hairiness and a deep voice does not make you any more of a man than you already are. Your voice may deepen as you get older but you may not get a hairy chest, lots of men don't have one and believe it or not a lot of men who are wish they were not."
fish biscuits replied: "Generally, besides working out, there isn't a lot a man can do to enhance his masculinity. He can, however, become more confident in what he already has.
What traits do you consider masculine; confidence? A good physique? Financial security? Friendliness? You can develop these characteristics & "become" the very man you admire in others.
I suggest you look into a men's group. Website is
Lavern, excellent advice!"
abqdan replied: "You should only take artificial hormones under the direction of a doctor. These are extremely powerful drugs that can have significant side effects.
Although testosterone might promote hair growth, it may not; it will however affect your moods, making you more aggressive, and it may shrink your testicles."
How could a person with a male genotype and normal testosterone levels be born looking like a female? How could a person with a male genotype and normal testosterone levels be born looking like a female? What are the possible mechanisms?
If you could give me some answers on this, or some weblinks, I'd really appreciate it!
Thanks!
Eugene K replied: "In order to respond to testosterone a cell has to have a proper receptor protein. A mutation that decreases the level or activity of this protein will make a cell non-responsive. The result is that testosterone may be around, but the cell does not "know" about it. Hence, the development turns to feminine, as if testosterone was not there."
Is there a natural way to get rid of excessive male hormones? I'm 15 and i've heard its pretty common that most girls have more male hormones than their own, resulting in excessive body hair and bad acne. Is there a natural way i can get rid of excessive male hormones/testosterone to balance my hormones?
ckngbbbls replied: "you cannot "get rid" of the hormones since your body is constantly producing them.
At your age, your body is still finding its way and hormone fluctuations is common.
I would talk to your doctor at your next visit about this because what you see as excessive body hair may be normal. In fact, some ethnic groups have more and darker body hair than others. If that is your case, it would have nothing to do with hormones."
Patti replied: "There is a class of herbs called adaptogens that balance hormones, bring up the level in ones that are too low and lower the ones that are too high. But you are 15 years old and I can't recommend them since you are still growing. Either talk to a doctor or eat as healthy as you can now and exercise and all that sort of stuff"
What makes testosterone a male hormone? I heard that women can have more testosterone than guys but is it common? And if it is then what makes it a male hormone, wouldn't it cause women to have facial hair and stuff? Is it higher in proportion than guys or higher in like actual quantity
Julia replied: "It does cause women to get facial hair in high enough quantities, but both sexes have it, its just men have more than women. just like you have some estrogen in you, but if you had to much you would start to grow breasts."
