How long does it take prednisone 20 mg to take effect in stooping the poison ivy? I have been told to take it 3times a day for 5days then 2 times a day for 4 days and daily for three days. How long will it take for prednisone to take effect and and help my posion ivy? thanks guys is calmine lotion and anti itch cream the same?

mijuju711 replied: "Prednisone is a steroid and works to help with your poison ivy by reducing the inflammation of the outbreak. It generally starts to help within a day or so, but may not really work all that great. Personally, since poison ivy is an allergic reaction, I'd prefer the OTC treatment of benadryl, baking soda baths, and calamine -- at least when you put the calamine on it's soothing right away! (And don't itch it!)"

Brother Otter replied: "You should start getting relief from the maddening itch within a day or two. I really sympathize - I react horribly to poison ivy myself. If the itch is driving you crazy and you don't have a lot of torn open, weeping blisters, Lanacaine ointment will help. My favorites for treating the stuff are: TecNu soap. It removes the oil that causes the problem and helps stop it spreading even after blisters form. You can find it at drug stores or online at Forestry Supply. Read the instructions. Caladryl Clear for topical treatement after a rash forms. Good luck mate. I feel your itch..."

How soon should Prednisone take effect when taking it for asthma? My fiance was wheezing and had tightness in his chest, so his doctor prescribed Prednisone (steroid) and Flovent (inhaler). He also has an albuterol inhaler for attacks from before. He's been on this treatment for a day and a half and is still wheezing and feeling tightness in his chest. Is this normal or should the symptoms have cleared up by now? Thanks for any help!

glenn t replied: "If he doesnt see very quick improvement after taking prednisone get back with his doctor. Also, avoid those surroundings that are causing his wheezing--surely he knows what triggers it. Pred. usually works quickly but I would not want to get hooked on it.-It plays with your mind."

blaze23 replied: "It will probably take another day or two. Prednisone isn't for acute treatment of asthma. Prednisone treats the inflammation that is exacerbating the asthma. Sounds like maybe he should be evaluated again if he is still having the tightness in the chest and wheezing."

Kitty replied: "really it depends on the dose he's taking. It usually takes 3 - 4 days for it to start taking affect on me and i take 40mg a day when I take it. good luck.. OH and I have found taking the prednisone WITH diet coke kills the after taste. I don't like diet coke but I like it more than the prednisone :)"

gabiace replied: "Prednisone is a steroidal drug taken when one's asthma worsens to a stage where a reliever is required to alleviate asthma symptoms more than often. So, if someone is taking prednisone, (which is basically a strong preventer) then they are either not managing their asthma correctly or they need a second opinion. Prednisone still needs to be taken with daily asthma medicine and reliever where required. If you only use the prednisone and abandon the inhalers then you might as well not be on anything at all. If the prednisone + other medications don't help within the next day or so, seek a second opinion. I hope this helps!"

Can prednisone effect your efforts to lose weight even after you've stopped taking it? I've been working out for months. I had to take prednisone for almost 6 months but i've been off of the medication for about 6 weeks and I still can't budge the scale. I work out 5 times a week, watch what I eat. I have no idea if this is still in my system causing my weight stall and can't find any information about how long it effects the body. Can anyone tell me if this could be the cause of my weight loss stall?

Due 09/10 :) replied: "I know that with prednislone you will gain quite a lot of water weight . Its going to take some time for your body to re adjust since you have been on it for several months. My son has asthma and would be on pred for 1 week and would get puffy - it would take at least a week for the puffiness to go down. Don't give up and be patient :) , Please remember though oral steroids will bring your resistance down so be careful not to over do it :) Good luck and glad you are feeling better :)"

Andrea E replied: "If you were taking prednisone for six months, 6 weeks isn't a long time to be off of it. Prednisone is a steroid, and has long term effects. You should really contact your doctor when trying to determine if it is still in your system, they may have to do some bloodwork. You should also try reducing your calorie intake, in addition to eating healthy. But you are definitely on the right track, don't get discouraged."

cyn replied: "Every time I took Pregnisone(steroids) I gained a little weight, due to my eating more.Plus I was aways thirsty. So the increase in my drinking caused me to gain weight. It takes time to loose weight after steroids for me.I got put on them over the years a lot due to my health issues and bad Asthma.I got one thing to ask?Has your vision changed at all? If you do notice a difference with your perrifial(side view) vision. If you do get your eyes checked it.None of my doctors told me one side effect is the increased chance of getting Glaucoma!(check out webmd.com or drugs.com for further info) I now have Glaucoma and my vision is bad(20/70)For the sake of your vision keep your eye's checked out.Sorry to rant about this, but I was pissed with my doc's because there were other opinions they could of taken occassionally without using all the steroids."

Does taking prednisone (steroids) effect the test result when tested for Cystic Fibrosis? I am severely asthmatic w/ an immune deficiency and due to recurring pneumonia, I am being sent to be tested for cystic fibrosis. I have been prednisone (steroid) dependent for years. I recently was hospitalized and given high doses IV. My pulmonolgist wants me to have the sweat test done for cystic fibrosis but is aware prednisone may effect the results. At what dose amount would it effect the results of the CF test and how long must past after taking the higher doses before the test can be done?

marnie replied: "I'm an RN who has taught Nursing for over 25 years and have checked out your question in my Medical and Nursing textbooks. I can certainly appreciate your concern about whether your prednisone intake, particularly your recent high doses of I.V. prednisone, has an effect on sweat test results for cystic fibrosis. According to my references, taking prednisone will not affect the result of the test. Good luck to you."

Newlungs2004 replied: "Hi, I'm a 39 year old CF patient and have never heard of Prednisone affecting the outcome of a sweat test. However, if your pulmonologist has concerns with the validity of the results he/she should check into DNA testing for it. DNA testing is more expensive and is based on the 600 or so most prevalent gene mutations that cause CF so it's not a 100% guarantee either, should it come back negative, and they may have to do additional tests. Good luck."

stevooo replied: "Sweat Tests for CF: 0-40 No CF 40-60 Borderline 60 plus Positive However many people have blood taken to test for the cystic fibrosis gene which is 100% accurate unless its an unknown mutation. Sweat tests are a good predictor but no-matter what you should ask to have geno-typing done. I have known many people with cf fail a sweat-test yet be persistent and be diagnosed with gene-testing. Its a simple test. Glad to help"

how long does it take for the full effect of taking prednisone? i started taking prednisone 2 days ago for bad allergies but its really not doing anything, today i have a very bad sore throath

Dr. John Doe replied: "It might already be taking affect, but your sore throat might not be allergy related. Sounds more like strep. And you don't treat strep with antihistamines. Good Luck:)"

poohbearajk replied: "takes about a month"

Can prednisone have an effect on a woman's menstrual cycle? I recently took prednisone and am about a week late for my period. Could this be a reason? I am usually pretty regular.

Susan S replied: "Yes, corticosteroid medications are known to cause menstrual irregularity. Sex hormoes are steroids, as is prednisone."

Would taking 20mg. of Prednisone give the effect of a moon face ? My Mom has been prescribed a daily dose of 20mg. of prednisone how will it effect her?

b_bardi99 replied: "it depends how long she has to be on it? some people are more sensitive than others. look up the possible side effects,so she will not "freak out" if she needs to take prednisne for months. can cause constant thirst/hunger.peeing more of course. hair thinning/falling(it will grow back) thinning skin, easy to bruise/tear. weight gain/moon face:it will go away prone to bacterial infections(suppressed immune system) don't go visiting to hospitals/nursing homes!"

Rachel replied: "The side effects of prednisone (moon face, etc) take quite a while to develop. If she is only on a short course of it (like a few weeks or few months), you probably have nothing to worry about. People get the side effects after taking it for a long time (probably the earliest time you may notice a change is 6 months). Good luck!"

Asthmatic_under_control replied: "that stuff makes you puffy, gain water weight, become irritable, grouchy, depressed and is NOT good for your system when you take it for long periods of time. As an asthmatic, I had to take 40 mg a day for several years. I have had weak bones and 2 spinal fusion surgeries, 3 cataract surgeries, extreme weight gain and was horribly irritable and had depression. Taking it short term is relatively safe but years of it can wreak havoc on your body Thanks to a new asthma drug, I no longer have to take Prednisone. Make sure your mom follows her doctor's instructions carefully. There is a good book out for people who have no choice but to be on Prednisone called: "Coping with Prednisone" I am sure you can order on at your local book store or find one for sale online. Good luck and God Bless!"

Prednisone side effect question? I was prescribed Prednisone to clear up an allergy due to penicillin. The thing is that i had been taking penicillin to fight infection because I just had my wisdom teeth removed. My 1st question is to know whether the extraction sites will heal fast. My 2nd question is that I have been having these strange side effect since i started taking Prednisone. I feel like i have something stuck in my oesophagus (like food or air) and it is very annoying. Any ideas what it could be?

daweeney replied: "Prednisone is known to slow healing, however if it's being used to combat an allergic reaction, you have to weigh the pros & cons. Obviously preventing anaphylaxis or treating a reaction is more important. If you still had several more doses of the Penicillin, someone should have put you on another antibiotic. The feeling in your throat, you need to call your doctor. Prednisone doesn't do that. What kind of reaction did you have to the PCN?"

ragincajun87123 replied: "doctors dont know what theyre doing half the time.... go see a alternative medicine doc they will cure you promise! those western meds are no good!"

suzi q replied: "The prednisone should be a short-term prescription for allergic reactions. Hopefully you have also been prescribed something else for the infection itself. Their is another condition that I can't remember how to spell(olitis?) that causes that sensation in your throat. It could just be a coincidence that it started at the same time you were being treated with prednisone, kinda like Murphy's Law:). I hope you start feeling better soon."

blazergirlblazergirl replied: "If you are still taking the PCN this may be causing the feeling in your throat. The prednisone can be prescribed for about a week to counteract an allergic reaction, but if you are still taking the pcn then your body may be trying to have a reaction and the prednisone is keeping it from happening. The pcn needed to be stopped immediately when you had the reaction. These reactions can be severe and even deadly. It isn't something you take lightly. If you are still taking the pcn then please stop. The dentist usually give patients an antibiotic for prevention and they don't actually have an infection."

Anj replied: "firstly, if you take prednisone for a short period, you should not expereince any side effects. Over the long term however side effects may include weight gain, going to the loo more frequently and pimples! I took prednisone for 10 years and I had all these side effects. The thing in your throat has nothing to do with prednisone - you should go see your doctor."

Is dark coffee colored urine a normal side effect for someone taking the drug Prednisone? Or should I be concerned? Thanks a lot

formerly_bob replied: "Prednisone generally has no effect on urine color, but it could cause blood in the urine, which appears brown. Otherwise, brown urine indicates a serious problem unless there is some type of pigment/dye in the food you are eating that ends up coloring the urine. You need to call the doc's office that prescribed the prednisone, and ask for advice."

carmeliasue replied: "NO, predisone does NOT cause coffee colored urine. I have taken predisone for over 8 years now and that is not even listed as a side effect. You need to contact your doctor's office immediately or maybe even go to the ER. This 'could be' and I stress 'could be' a serious medical problem, and yet again, it may be nothing to worry about, but only a doctor can tell you for sure."

dingding replied: "I've heard several people say that, and they turned out fine, so I would say yes."

Ernie replied: "Yes you should be concerned. Sounds like blood in urine so see the doctor who prescribed prednisone."
