Protonix Issues Facts

any issues with protonix? I have been taking Protonix for my gastritis that I have had off and on for the past month. The first two days where fine but now I have headaches, constipation, and my throat feels like it is tight and hurts. I also have been really depressed. I want to eat things that I normally could eat. I hardely ever ate spicy foods and hardly drank. I just want this all to go away. has anyone had success with protonix? and has anyone had the same side effects?
imagine replied: "I took protonix for GERD for a couple of years and never experienced any bad side-effects, but over time I found it didn't work as well and so I had to switch to a different medicine. I now take prilosec, which works great."
Protonix and colon cancer? I am a student nurse and a patient I am taking care of is on Pantoprazole Inj (Protonix). She recently had her part of her colon removed due to cancer. I read this med is for erosive esophagitis assoc. w/ GERD. How would this be related to her colon cancer or would they be separate issues?
shanupo replied: "Well the strength of protonix is insane! It basically eliminates most stomach acid....which...the obvious reason we have stomach acid is bc it breaks our food down. But when we dont have much left bc of it being neutralized....its possible that the digestive system can get out of wack. I doubt they are directly connected though."
Heartburn symptoms still happening with 80mg of protonix (twice normal daily dose)? I have been on Protonix since May and within the past month my dr upped me from 40mg to 80mg of protonix daily (one in morning and one at night). I still often times notice that I have the chest pressure and bloating I had from my acid reflux before. I burp a lot and even when im not I still have the feeling I need to burp. FYI ALERT - My stools are soft and sometimes feel like they are acidic (Kinda like diarrhea feels) but its not that soft. I have even had a streak of blood in my stool and it hurts when its at the last part of coming out (sorry).
I dont know what to do anymore. I've had 2 barrium studies (one esophagus and one stomach and slightly below). He said everything completely normal, no acid reflux or anything. They did an Hpylori test and it came back completely normal.
I do have other symptoms such as racing heart (at times), heart PVCs (Flutters), wake up at night or in the morning sweating, woke up a few times with an arm sore like I had exercised all night, dizziness, tightness in my neck muscles all the way down to my shoulders, and sinus issues (stuffy nose, slight pain in face and headaches under eyebrows daily).
I know this is a huge array of symptoms but I wanted to let everyone know everything thats been going on. This has all been happening various symptoms at various times, usually for a week or so at a time and goes away for a week, sometimes more or less. I've noticed the week before my period some things get worse like PVCs, rapid heart rate, irritibility, anxiety. I do have some issues with anxiety full term ever since about 5 months after my dad died (most of my anxiety is health related).
Anyways if you can help me at all PLEASE do..Even if this sounds simliar to something you've experienced, I'd love to hear! I need to soften the symptoms at the least.
Another thing I should add is I've had 6 EKGs, 5 panels of completely blood tests, blood cultures, thyroid testing twice, CT scan with contrast of neck, chest and abdomen, 3 chest xrays, ultrasound of gallbladder, liver, kidneys, pancreas, appendix and aorota. I am scheduled to have an ECHO and stress test this week even tho cardio dr says hes sure nothing is wrong with my heart. Everything came back normal except for a slight vitamin D defiency which I take vita D for everyday.
Peter replied: "I think you may be a hypochondriac or have some anxiety problems. I had anxiety and had many of the symptoms you get. I went to a shrink that taught me how to cope and think positively, it really helped. Also I was getting heart burn, indigestion, stomach pains; it turned out to be coeliac disease."
Anyone else with wierd lung issues? I'm a teenage female. Had bacterial pnemonia when I was 2 (intubated and everything), but that resolved. I was diagnosed with asthma as a result, and had no problems right up until high school. I would do my inhaler maybe ONCE every 6 months and didn't do a nebulizer for years at a time. When I was 14, I developed pnemonia again, and my lungs have been shot ever since. I'm on Q4 nebulizers, 120mg pred/day, singulair, zyrtec, protonix (acid reflux), nasonex, duoneb, chromylin, and going to start Xolair. My PFTs are ok, not great, with my average numbers being right around 75%, 63%, low 40s for smaller airways. Avg. Peak flow is about 350, and I have constant expiratory wheezes. My lower left lobe is collaped; hyperinflation over both lungs. Thick mucus present in left. The odd part, and the part I'm hoping other people can relate to, is that this seems to be progressive. Without known triggers, I have been getting worse alarmingly quickly. Been tested for CF/autoimmune. Anyone else?
~Sheila~ replied: "Sure sounds like the doctors are putting your thru the ringer concerning your lungs. I suffered for serveral years with a lung problem with thru test but couldn't find a definite cause for the breathing problems, the pulmonary hypertention until November 2002, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called Pulmonary Sarcoidosis but the lung doctor told me that he didn't want to go in & aggravate it more since all I had was a cough. (a cough that felt like it was stripping the lining of my lungs). March 2005, I got a definite diagnosis of Pulmonary Sarcoidosis, Lupus, Pulmonary hypertention, seizures, RA, Fibromyalgia, panic/anxiety attacks, depression. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT GIVE UP. AN AUTO-IMMUNE DISEASE WILL SNEAK UP BEHIND YOU & BITE YOU HARD. GOOD LUCK."
Help! Can asthma/difficulty breathing be an allergic reaction to a bug bite? I went to bed the other night with some mild difficulty breathing. I'm an asthmatic (mostly sports and weather induced, or dust), so it wasn't that abnormal. When I woke up, I noticed I had a bug bite on my hand, in between 2 knuckles. My asthma has proceeded to be some of the worst it's been yesterday and today. I used my inhaler the maximum dose yesterday, and it didn't touch it, and I've already used it twice today and am still having that tightness in my chest that accompanies my asthma. The bug bite is still very swollen and red and itchy. Could they be related?
I have also had acid reflux flare-ups for the past week. I also wondered if that could be related. I know those 2 things can be a sign of heart issues, but I don't feel shaky or weird other than the difficulty breathing and persistent acid reflux. Also, I have chronic stomach problems that are under medication (Protonix).
Any advice and input would be greatly appreciated!
Though I do have chronic stomach problems, I don't typically have acid reflux, and never for this long.
My one concern is the breathing problems started BEFORE I saw the bug bite, and I believe the bug bite happened during the night, which would mean the breathing problems started for sure before I got the bite.
I also was exposed to primer while working on my house on Monday night. It was pretty strong, and all we had were open windows, no fan. Sorry for all the details, I just don't have time to go to my dr today.
mark replied: "breathing problems are a typical allergic reaction . If you have used your emergency inhaler the maximum allowed I would call your Doctor ."
James S replied: "I recommend that you see a doctor soon. Don't let your asthma kill you because you didn't want to disrupt your schedule to go to the ER, walk-in clinic, or doctor's office.
If you need to use the maximum dose of your inhaler and things are looking bad for today too, please get yourself to the ER now. This will mess-up your schedule because you will likely be spending a day or two in hospital while the steroids they will give you via IV and pills start to work and they try to break your asthma with a continuous nebulizer of Albuterol. Having a few days of disruption is better than being dead.
Asthma kills 300 people every year in Canada. That's 300 pointless deaths every year. Regardless of where you are, don't become part of the asthma fatality statistic."
Stomach Issues!? Hi, for five years I've been having recurring attacks of stomach pain and vomiting. They are severe and I've been to the emergency room several times. I've been testing for everything in the book, only showing very mild chronic gastritis. Because of this, the last E.R. doctor gave me Protonix, which stopped the episodes completely for five months, then they slowly started to return and now are back worse than ever. Nexium didn't help.
Anyone know what would cause this? Did the protonix stop working? What could be causing the acute flare-ups? I don't have H. Pylori, I don't drink, I take Advil every once in a while, but it's not related. What other causes of acute gastritis could I be dealing with?
Thanks!!
According to the ALCAT test, I have multiple food sensitivities. Gluten is mild, corn is severe. I went on a strict elimination diet, cooking everything from scratch etc, and found the frequency of the episodes went from once a week to once a month. But I could not achieve complete remission...
manicmousy replied: "see your dr asap. could be an ulcer, could be acid reflux, could be anything. don't mess around. see your dr."
Kaik Rox replied: "If you've had chronic gastritis, you may now have an ulcer. I know you say you don't have H.Pylori or don't drink and all of that stuff, but stress can cause it, as well. Have you been stressed out lately? That could deff. make your gastritis worse or cause an ulcer. I know when I got gastritis(acute) and later my ulcer, it was due to stress, seeing as I didn't have H. Pylori and I don't drink and take NSAIDS. It could be reflux, too. Either way, your Nexium should be helping, at least a bit. I would totally go to your doctor, to make sure everything is okay and nothing serious is going on. They'll probably want to do a endoscopy too look around in your upper digestive tract, if they think its serious enough. They can always prescibe you things like Prevacid(I take this, and it works great) which is quite a bit stronger than Nexium.
Hope you feel better soon. :]"
Stephanie replied: "How are you bowels? If you are taking an antiacid then it is making your stomach acid go bye bye therefore you are not digesting your food. I would try a gluten free diet for about 8 weeks. You can go to my website and get the diet from the left side of the page (receipes are included) and let your body chill out. If your colon is slow or spasm type you should really think about the change. You could possibly be having some food allergies that no one is catching. Look at the website and see what you think. People are allergic to foods because they eat the same things for years on end and the food supply we have now days is gentically altered. Please take braggs apple cider vinegar if you are feeling bad because it will help your stomach. You can google it and read more about it. It seems like it wouldnt work but it does.

Currently Starting on Mucinex D? Hello all. I was just told by my doctor to take Mucinex D for my post nasal drainage issues. I am now extremely hesitant to start any medication after my experiences with lexapro and protonix, and I wanted to know if their are any side effects and if so how often do people get them and how dangerous the medication can be. Thanks!
Katie B replied: "mucinex will act to clear the drainage from your respiratory system. it does not work the same way as the other 2 drugs you mentioned, it is a different class entirely.
be sure to drink lots of water while taking mucinex, and know that the generic version (store brands) works just as well at about half the price."
emtp911 replied: "Mucinex has Guaffinisine (sp) in them. Different brands come in different strenght's.
The brand name such as the Mucinex has more mg then say Walgreen's brand. Do you have a Dollar General or Family Dollar near you, they have a brand of it and its much, much cheaper.
Side effects are increased heart rate, shakiness, jitters, dry mouth, insomnia
Be sure and drink lots and lots of water with it.
If your taking Lexapro you might be taking it for depression or anxiety attacks. If you have anxiety attacks that in its self will cause an increase in your heart rate. Use with caution. Did your Doc tell you to take a certain mg at a time or a certain amount a day. Be sure and look at the mg of the guaffinisine in each brand. They are going to range from 800mg to 400mg.
One of the drugs in the Mucinex acts as an dilator in the bronchi and the other "D" acts as an expectorant, helping you to cough it out
Hope this helps
A great site to look up meds is
I used this site allot when I was working.
Hope you feel better soon"
I haven't had a period in over 4 months... why? (def. not pregnant)? I haven't had a period since at least Feburary. I have had sex twice since then but I used protection both times and have taken 2 home pregnancy tests that were both negative. I am on several medications and was wondering if maybe that was why. I currently take 80mgs of prozac, 60mgs of cymbalta, 40mgs of protonix, 550mgs of Seroquel, 350mgs of Trazodone, 2mgs of Klonipin, 10mgs Singular and use a 17g albuterol inhaler. I am 22 years old and am very overweight. My period didn't start until I was 16 or 17, and it's never really been normal, but this is the longest it's ever been that it has come. I have never been to a gyn. because I am scared of what would go on (psych. issues are a major problem I have)
Any one have any ideas what to do or what could be going on? Help!!
**Goddess** replied: "u need to see a doc.. :("
stoneco replied: "you should definitely see a doctor. ask your friends who they go to and if they like their doctor and try that. maybe one of your friends will go with you so that you will feel better about the ordeal."
mlgable replied: "There is no clue what is going on and you have to see a doc to get checked out. YOU DO NOT have to see a GYN as your regular doc can do this for you. Since you are 22 years old AND sexually active you are long over due for a pap smear and pelvic exam. Call your doc and get all of this scheduled. If you are nervous about having to see a doc then ask him to prescribe something you can take an hour or so before you have to go to the appointment to help calm your nerves. You health is very important so go get these tests done and figure out what is going on."
Leah christina replied: "i think it it may be due to your weight/ medication but you should really check with a doctor to make sure everything is alright."
random replied: "You should take a pregnancy test now to make sure that you're not pregnant. If the test is negative, I agree that you should see your MD. However, it sounds like you have had irregular periods in the past and that you might be suffering from depression/psychiatric illness. It's possible that your mental health could be impairing the hormones in your body to regulate so you might not be menstruating."
Pain just to right of belly button? For the past 9 months or so I've been having severe acid reflux issues, if I dont take one of my protonix doses I get bad pressure in my chest, burping up stuff, and pain in my abdomen. I was put on double doses of protonix daily but it still doesnt completely resolve it.
Just within the past 2 weeks I've started having pain (feels like muscle cramp) but its about 2 inches to the right of my belly button and up about 1/2 inch or so and the pain is in an area a little larger then a half dollar. If I push on it I get a pain and when I lean forward I get pain there. I also feel pain right in the right middle of my back. This pain isnt constant but it is if I push on the area. I have had barium swallow xrays to check my stomach/esophagus and they saw no reflux, ulcers or hernias. I am lost? I've had an ultrasound looking for gall stones because the dr thought for sure that was it but they didnt see anything (this was 4 months ago, the pain has progressed since).
I also have no bowel movement issues and never have diarrhea or anything.
Does this sound typical for gallbladder or something else?
By the way I've been told I have anxiety before..This is NOT from anxiety. I've seen several drs but not since this pain started. I've ben told previously that drs thought I had a gall bladder issue but the ultrasound came back normal so they didnt do anything but give me a PPI which isnt doing much.
Another thing is lately I'll get extreme nausea for no apparent reason.
I had a CT of abdomen back 4 months or so ago and they said appendix looked good.
a9653wolf replied: "It could be your gallbladder. sounds as if it might be."
nehpetslodge replied: "hey dee..i think you better see a doctor, this might also be due to severe stress, anxiety and all which prompted to aggravate the situation. hey, a good doctor will give some advise on this, rather than doing nothing. and to avoid panic, stress, anxiety, please relax panicking doesnt do good. "
Pat replied: "It could be your appendix. You said you've had the barium swallow. Have you had the barium enema exam? The swallow shows the upper part of the GI tract, and the other... well, shows the rest of it.
The proton pump inhibitor hasn't helped. You might need to try another one or your symptoms possibly have nothing to do with acid reflux.
The description you give of the area where your pain is and the nausea does sound like it could be your appendix. Go back to your doctor and insist on more testing.
Good luck"
Any M.D. or Gastro doctors please help.? During a 4 month span I was on antibitics nearly round the clock due to the fact I had some dental and sinus issues. The last one I took was CEFPODOXIME 200mg. I acquired a stomach burning around that time and decided to stop taking the Cefpo. The symptoms receded some shortly after, but have continued since. Its been about 6 weeks since I stopped and the burning although not as bad, contiues. The lower stomach both left and right side, upper stomach, and left and right breasts are effected also. The skin in these areas seems to be itchy alot. I have a great appetite, no bloody or loose stool and no nausea. In the past year I have had an echo, stress test, abdomen ultrasound, chest x-ray, gallbladder ultra sound , complete blood work, H. pylori test and an EGD. All results were as they should be. I am currently taking protonix 40mg twice daily. Is there any suggestions out there as to what is wrong with me and what I should do. Just more time?
I am a 30 year old male. I have never smoked, or done drugs. I do not drink alcohol either. Most of those tests were done a year ago, and I was found to be lactose intolerant.
Edward W replied: "That is enough medication to eat up my stomach, make sure you eat and eat plenty before taking these medication. A glass of milk and crackers wont do you need FOOD!!!!! WHEN ON ANTIBIOTICS NEVER STOP ON YOUR OWN FINISH THE COURSE IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS, CONSULT WITH YOUR DOCTOR. HOPE THIS HELP."
jessiesgirl1972@sbcglobal.net replied: "You've been asking about this for 2 months. If you haven't talked to your doctor, then do that. If you have and haven't received a satisfactory answer, get a 2nd and 3rd opinion from other doctors, not a bunch of yahoos."
