Rate Paxil Information in Questions
Can 20mg of paxil per day cause a slow heart rate? I started taking paxil at this dosage about one month ago. I have also increased my physical activity for the past four months, riding my bike or walking everywhere I go. My blood pressure averages 116/70 and my heart rate has been as low as 46bpm just a few days ago. This was using a blood pressure machine and the HR has been consistently below 50bpm for the past two weeks. I am 48 years old weight is 204, 6 feet tall, waist 34 lost about 13lbs, since increase in exercise. Any answers would be appreciated. Thank you John R.

Audrey D replied: "Yes, Paxil can cause bradycardia - a slow heart rate. Conversely, it can also cause tachycardia - a rapid heart rate. Are you experiencing symptoms - dizziness, confusion, lightheadedness, shortness of breath? A slow heart rate in and of itself is not a problem; the question is are you having symptoms related to the slow heart rate? Please keep in mind that blood pressure machines in pharmacies, grocery stores, etc, are not very reliable. These machines are not calibrated frequently - hospital machines are calibrated on a schedule. You are a big man, so I would expect your heart rate to be higher. Are you taking any other medications? Obviously, this is causing you distress so by all means, call your doctor. His/her reassurance will ease your mind. You may undergo a few simple tests just to make sure nothing more serious is going on. Good luck to you; I wish you health & a long life."

Heretix replied: "Don;t start popping pills, especially one that slows your heart. Go to your doctor and ask for professional advise. You might be doing more damage than good. Different people have different physiology, so go for a check up and see what needs to be fixed if any."

can antidepressants slow the heart rate? i currently take paxil for panic disorder and have noticed my heart rate has slowed down a good bit.. my resting pulse is usually now around 57.. i was having palipitations before starting , now almost none.. i have been taking the paxil for a little over a week, is this normal?

Spunky replied: "i dont think thats normal for paxil but 57 is extremely low. normal is 60-100 below that should get checked. see a doc and fast"

W. Brown-Raymond replied: "57 is Normal...sorta. 60-100 for adults. 40-60 for very well conditioned athletes. If they are using it for anxiety, its going to be a downer, so yes, thats normal. 2 suggestions-call a Pharmacist. Sometimes they can help, sometimes not. other, call your docs nurse. She will know!! Good Luck"

Fast heart rate.. What could this be? Background info: I am 24/female. I have had panic-disorder and anxiety since around 13 yrs. old. I am taking paxil 20mg and klonipin 1 mg x2 daily for anxiety. I also take Albuterol in the nebulizer for breathing problems. As needed. My heart rate usually runs around 85-95 beats per minute. For the past 6 hours it is staying right in the range of 120 beats down to 105 beats. My blood preasure is good though. 2 weeks ago I went to the emergency room due to being very ill and weak. I had a fever of 102.8 and they noticed my heart rate was 138 and they ran me back to the main ER and hooked me up to an EKG machine, did chest x-rays and kept me on the moniter for an hour or two. The tests came back normal. However this time I don't have a fever and am not feeling ill. The last time 2 wks ago I had a viral infection. When I lay very still it is about 105-110. Moving makes it go faster. My breathing is hard sometimes because it feels as though i've been running. I did take an albuterol treatment right before it started getting faster. but I have taken them many, many, many times before with no change in heart rate. I have also been very stressed out today. And sadly I haven't drank a glass of water HONESTLY in MONTHS! ugh! I am drinking water now though. I wanted to fill up the kids swimming pool today and do some things outdoors. Should I do them anyway? Or try to keep still and rest? I feel fine as long as it doesn't shoot back up to over 120 bpm. I have things to do! I don't have time for this! UGH!!!! This is terrible. What should I do ?

babycakes3557 replied: "Hello miss lady. I do really understand what your going through. I have panic and aniexty my self and have had it for the last 20 years. I take xnax 2 mg. I have found a way to just fight the feeling and not let these dam doctors try to make me think I am crazy, that is what they did to me sending me to nut doctors. Most people that dont no anything about this might say someone is crazy but that is not the case. It is something most of the time that runs in your family as mine does, My sister and one of my daughters have it as well. It is a blood disorder. And when the blood flow is not regular cause your body to react in a strange way which cause you to feel stranger which then causes panic, I have been there so many times. I will be glad to help you if I can any way possible , THis is awfull to deal with. If you want to email me here is my addy... "

M replied: "u should go 2 a cardiologist and ur doctor. hope i helped. and i think u should stay inside. also, u may have a form of a fast heart beat like s.v.t. like i have. i could tell u more info if u like bout my heart condition."

Paxil..Xanax..with a beta blocker?.? Ive been on 100mg of atenenol ((beta blocker)) a day for rapid heart rate from anxiety for about 3 years. Since that only helped the adrenaline part of anxiety and not the mind, My doctor just put me on 20mg of paxil and 25mg of Xanax. I wus wondering if all of this will make my heart go too slow, because the only reason im on a beta blocker is to slow my heart down. My doctor said ill be fine, but I dont know. 3 different medZ sounds a little crazy. Someone helpp pleasee. thanks

Iceplayr replied: "I am somewhat biased since I deal with patients on a daily basis that take multiple meds and often take more meds to resolve the side effect of the first med. Its a vicious cycle. If its just 3 right now, next year it might be 5 or 6. In my opinion docs over prescribe many meds with out proper diagnosis. Have you sought psychological evaluation? There are many contributing factors and variables. I am guessing your young and dont have a cardiac condition that is the underlying cause of you tachycardia. Hence, you have been taking Atenenlol for 3 years due to anxiety. Personally, I would be re-evaluating my life (and Dr.) and be taking a look in the mirror. 3 years of anxiety and now your meds just got upped. This is not progress. Its regression. I would get a second or third opinion. Anxiety can often be changed with a lifestyle change. Do some research (google, webMD, etc...) reagrding Paxil, Xanax, Stress, Depression and Anxiety."

ralexander replied: "This is a safe combination of drugs (except i'm assuming you got the dosage of xanax wrong). However, if you are uncomfortable taking these meds, once the paxil kicks in, you might ask your doc to try to wean you off atenolol (if it really is just for anxiety) as you might not need it any more."

Labatt113 replied: "Xanax doesn't come in a 25 mg, its only .25mg-2.0mg. Now beta blockers are used for blood pressure. • Atenolol is in a group of drugs called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers affect the heart and circulation (blood flow through arteries and veins). • Atenolol is used to treat angina (chest pain) and hypertension (high blood pressure). It is also used to treat or prevent heart attack. So the answer is no. Granted a Benzo like Xanax can slow down your pulse, your Beta Blocker is doing a different function. Considering your Blood pressure is high already your heart rate is only going to be affected like a regular (non high blood pressure) person would while taking xanax. Paxil should not affect the heart at all. IT could on the other hand damage your sex drive over time and cause diarrhea."

I cannot afford my medication since I lost my job. In FL is there any way I can receive assistance with cost? Since I have been having trouble locating a job with benefits, I have not been able to continue my medication. It is the anti-depression medication manufactured by Smith GlaxoKline. My life is actually miserable without it. Is there any way to acquire paxil at a reduced rate or even for free in the state of Florida where I live? I would do almost anything to have my life back.

Levi replied: "Yes contact GlaxoSmithKline on the internet they will send it directly to your home at a reduced fee or at no cost at all. Good luck with your search."

Sharlene R replied: "Yes, contact Smith GlaxoKline and apply to them for assistance. Most drug companies will give medications free or reduced price to those in need who cannot afford it. Also you could apply through department of human resources for medical assistance. If you qualify you will get free or reduced price for prescription medications and medical care."

naturegirl replied: "Sometimes the drug companies will help you. You need to find out where to go to get help. most communities have a free clinic or some kind of service for people who can't afford health care. Also, most have low or no cost psychiatric care. look in your phone book and call a psychiatric doc office and they will tell you who in town will take you."

kennadee30 replied: "Yes go on the needymeeds.com site its very helpful"

Slim Whitman replied: "Paxil is chemically similar to flouxetine, (prozac), both are SSRI's fluoxetine can be purchased in Generic form for until 10 dollars for 30 day script. I've found that many people are prescribed anti-depressants would benefit more from psycho-therapy or support groups and the therapeutic benefits would be greater then meds. If you started taking meds without a psychiatrist through a general practioner consider seeing a psychiatrist for an eval. It's good to evaluate your medication use periodically and sometimes you may be at a point where medication is not providing the desired effect."

neoswhite_rabbit replied: "There are a few things that I can suggest. First, you should not go off the pills, i know how hard that is when you are strapped for cash. I know where I live Red Cross and some of the churches will help with perscriptions. Talk to your doctor, some of the drug manufaturers have assistance programs to help people stay on their pills, also you could talk to someone at your local Department of Human Services. They may have an assistance program also. Good Luck!"

Poetgirl76 replied: "www.needymeds.com is good, as someone else suggested. A couple of other prescription assistance places are: Also, you can ask your doctor for samples."

Has anybody switched from Paxil to Lexapro? I've been taking Paxil for 13 years and it's therapeudic, but I've gained tons of weight. I tried switching to Wellbutrin once but I was very anxious because I had that feeling "Am I feeling ok? Am I different? Is this working?" I was just reading about Lexapro and how it sometimes helps with compulsive eating. It's an SSRI, like Paxil and I feel pretty sure it would be equally as therapeudic, but I'm concerned about the transitional period. Have you been on Paxil and switched to Lexapro and at what rate did you do it?

ace_all_iced03 replied: "I dont know about pax or lex but I'm on cellexa and it works great, I've seen little side effects, after the first few months I started coming down again so the doc put me on wellbutrin also, but other then that Cellexa works great and I've lost about 5-6 lbs. which is great... :) hope this helps"

Mudit B replied: "All SSRIs start working in about 2 weeks and their effect weans off in around 3 weeks. So You dont have to worry about the transient period because the drug paxil would still be working ( though less by 3 rd week) till the lexapro works."

Alissa replied: "I havent ever been on paxil but ive taken lexapro and it was the worst ssri i ever tried. it made me so jittery and anxious all the time. i had sweaty palms, i always felt like complete crap, the whole side effect period never went away and this happened 2 different times i tried taking it. also, my mother recently tried taking it and experienced the same problem. and she had this terrible insomnia where she didnt sleep hardly (maybe 3 hours) for 3 days!! it was aweful."

Sparky replied: "all three are wonderful medications, follow your doctors advice."

thebtpyoda replied: "i switched from paxil to lexapro. lexapro is probably the best with side effects so you should have a better luck with your weight problem with that drug. since u've been taking paxil so long it make take a month or so till u feel really normal again."

Dawn replied: "Lexapro was the ONLY reason I was able to get off the demon drug Paxil without debilitating side effects.. I had tried to wean myself off Paxil before but the side effects were horrible. Finally my doc had me slowly reduce the dosage until I was taking 5mg a day. That is when he started ramping me up on Lexapro... Much easier transition! We should have done it at 10mg! I haven't noticed (for me personally) any difference in eating habits while on Lexapro vs Paxil... Does seem like there wasn't as much of a flattening effect on Lexapro as compared to Paxil... But the big difference is I haven't experience the zaps since being on Lexapro... Not one experience of the zaps that I had to endure while on Paxil... Paxil really made me feel "weird" and it was a relief when I finally got it all out of my system... Good luck on finding a med that works for you."

paxil and withdrawal? is it true that paxil (and other SSRIs) are highly protein-bound, and accumulate in brain tissue at an alarming rate- 100 times greater than in the blood? and also, is it true that the worst of withdrawal doesn't start for several months after the last dose??

Magik replied: "I took that years ago and never had any withdrawl."

Joy S replied: "The definition of drug withdrawal is that the person has become dependent on the drug. When the drug is removed the person does not just revert to how they were before they started taking the drug but actually would become worse than they were before they started taking the drug. Plus in withdrawal there is a longing or craving for the drug that nothing else besides a spiritual experience can satisfy. In withdrawal depending on what drug a person is withdrawing from, there can be achiness, depression, irritability, anxiety, weakness, sweats, nausea and even hallucinations. Generally speaking then, since SSRIs are not addictive, there can be no such thing as withdrawal from them. As for the protein-bound, brain accumulation concept, I cannot speak to it as I am not a chemist or pharmacist. But that is a different issue than withdrawal. That would be a side effect and apparently only happen while taking the medication. There can be a rebound effect when a person abruptly stops taking their SSRI antidepressants. This is to what I referred above--namely that the depression or anxiety comes back. It may also worsen as the nature of depression and anxiety is to become angry or fearful about what is happening or how you are feeling."

ms_Lila replied: "I don't know anything about SSRI's and protein binding and accumulating in brain tissue but I do know about Paxil withdrawal. Withdrawal from Paxil happens quickly because the half life of the medication is less than a day. Not everybody experiences the withdrawal from SSRI's but Paxil seems to be the most common one that people have problems with. Type in "Paxil withdrawal" in a search engine. I took Paxil for 11 weeks at 20 mg a day which is the minimum dose which I took for PMS mood swings. I experienced withdrawal symptoms about 12 hours after a missed dose when I was trying to come off of it. I thought in the beginning it was a flu bug or something but then figured it out to be withdrawing from the Paxil. To prove it I took another pill and within an hour or so all symptoms cleared up. I went to my doctor and told him what I was experiencing and he agreed it was Paxil withdrawal and we tried tapering me off it slowly. After a month of cutting pills up and trying to make sure the pieces were the same size I said forget it and went cold turkey again. I experienced full withdrawal for about 4 days and during this time I couldn't sleep even though my doctor prescribed a sedative to try and help me through the withdrawal process. Symptoms were: really edgy, sensitive to sound and movement, dizzy unbalanced feeling, little queasy and not hungry, couldn't focus on things and even trying to watch TV was difficult and those very annoying "zaps" that I felt in my head when I turned my head or blinked my eyes. After the 4 days all the symptoms went away except for the "zaps" but they did get better. I only felt the zaps when I blinked my eyes. That troublesome withdrawal symptom lasted almost a month. After that I was clear and haven't had a problem since and it has been about 5 years now. So from my experience I would say that if you going to have any trouble withdrawing from Paxil it will start quite quickly and you should taper off slowly if you are on a high dose. On the other hand you will know just as quick if you are not going to have any trouble. If you do have problems just take another dose and if the symptoms you are experiencing clear up within an hour or so then you know it is withdrawal. Then make an appointment to see your doctor and plan out a schedule for tapering off. You should not experience withdrawal years later, if you do there probably a different reason for it. If you are changing medication to perhaps another SSRI you can do that and you will likely not experience a withdrawal at all. Good luck to you."

What are some more healthy alternatives to marijuanna ? I was on paxil and am never going back on it. I think the makers of it designed it to actually increase the suicide rate and wipe all the depressives on it out. Gastrointestianal problems - and they are bad -- they NEVER end. Sexual - not impotence but I did not cum and it messed up alot of women . Paxil is a drug of death. I want something that will make me feel alive not dead -. Come of you geniuses of health - tell me - Using pot has given me releif from misery - made me friends - increased success - I want something more healthy though - as it is not good on the lungs and causes wheezing

bikernoj replied: "Try bicycling. You get away from other people that bother you, get some good exercise, and can go at whatever pace you feel like riding. Fresh air is better than smoking, of course, and the best part is the serotonin that your hypothalamus releases during exercise. Serotonin is completely natural, and has the same feel-good effects as opium. Chemically, serotonin isn't very different from opium, and I have yet to come back from a bicycle ride angry or sad. The other good part is that you'll have more energy and lose weight if you need to. So it allows you to get in shape and make your own opiates, and the only side effects are spending money on bike parts! Failing that, or if the weather's not cooperating, just get outside and go for a walk. Do SOMETHING instead of sitting around. That just makes you feel useless!"

Beav replied: "For low side effects, I highly recommend Celexa. I'm on the maximum dose right now and the side effects are nil. And it's not just me. It does have a reputation for that. As you probably know, Paxil's is pretty bad. Zoloft too. I don't know if it's relevant to your condition, but from what I understand it's especially good for anxiety and it's the only one recommended for OCD at higher doses. I used to smoke, but it made me a lot less functional. My roomate during that time got benefits from it though, like you."

katydint replied: "Absolutely, exercise and fresh air will boost your sense of well being, as will meditation. They are both ways in which you can get a better grip on your handle. Good luck."

carriem1988 replied: "For 2 years I also smoked marijuana to 'self medicate' [as my psychiatrist calls it]. Due to drug tests & the fact that it IS illegal, -like you, I decided to seek out a healthier & legal alternative. Finally, I allowed myself to be evaluated by a psychiatrist & was prescribed the proper medications the deemed an excellent alternative to marijuana [lack of motivation & energy was completely cured] Currently, I am on Effexor -which I love- because I don't feel numbed out & have unnoticable side-effects, - EXCEPT [& be warned of this] when not taking it for a couple of days or quiting 'cold turkey' - [like with most anti-depressants] - the withdrawl symptoms are awful - so I recommend using one of those pill boxes to help you remember. - Also, I am on adderall [ADD medication/stimulate] which I love as well because I can concentrate on my work, my thoughts seemed to be more organized, & I seem to think a lot more clearly. -FYI [if you also used marijuana to help with sleeping - as I did] my doctor prescribed a low-dose of klonopin to take at night before bed that takes the edge off. -However, I absolutely hated being on all of those medications at the young age I am, [although I am going through an extremely hard time right now leaving me nearly incapable to cope with alone....] - so one thing I've tried doing is walking/running around my neighborhood [or any form of exercise you are comfortable with]. It was an excellent escape & way to gather thoughts. It has made a 360 degree turn of a difference - I've lost 20 pounds, my energy & confidence is up & I no longer have trouble sleeping. - Because of that, I no longer need to take the klonopin & reduced the mg of my effexor - I still take the adderall- but only when I have to do school work instead of taking it daily as I did before. -Basically you should see a pyschiatrist to evaluate what your symptoms are & how severe. I highly recommend that you SHOULD tell him you used marijuana as an alternative [all information you give to your doctor is, by law, kept private]. I hope this 'answer' helped in some way. Good Luck! -Carrie"

Ruth M replied: "You won't get a lot of useful responses from people if you insist on addressing others with, "...Come of(sic) you geniuses of health..." Paxil has not been tolerated by many people but marijuana interferes with long term memory and is as implicated in lung cancer as tobacco. If you are feeling suicidal, then get to an emergency room right away before you attempt suicide. There are alternatives to paxil or pot - and scientifically validated ones to boot!"

Coming off of Paxil? I am trying to get off of Paxil and I feel so horrible that I don't know if it is worth this pain. I can't think straight and my vision is messed up. My head feels like it is either vibrating or like waves are going through it. I went without my 10mg of Paxil for a week cold turkey and have been taking it sparatically since then. Which was like two weeks ago. I want to be off of this drug. If it has the power to make me feel like this just by me not taking it I don't want it in my system. Please does anyone have any ideas or experience making this a little easier. At this rate I don't think I can make it through the withdrawel process. Please any detox secrets or anything at all that will make this easier. I don't know how I should go about getting off of it. Will I have the same effects cold turkey as I would cutting my 10mg in half each week.

csigeoffrey replied: "*****I believe you may experience less withdrawl by taking 10mg one day the 5mg the next. When that becomes comfortable, cut to 5mg/day everyday. Ween off if you can, but be careful cause I have knowledge of people having serious issues. Sometimes is best to simply continue usage. Obviously, a doctor would be more helpful. You would also benefit from having someone else that knows what you are doing that can make sensible observations about your behavior. BE CAREFUL!"

krazyladee replied: "I was on Paxil for two years and I quit 20 mg cold turkey. It takes like 3 months to get out of your system. In the process you get SEVERELY depressed, so make sure your doc knows your quitting so he can help you through this. I had the worst time coming off of it. Everything was so out of control. I did a detox called toxinout and I got some sun, like 20 minutes a day. It's really hard, if you can make it through this, you can make it through anything. Congrats and good luck!"

Robin B replied: "Hey-please...you should never quit paxil cold turkey.Talk to your Dr about it. I quit it years ago myself and I'm doing great, but I did not quit cold turkey,I did it w/the help of my Dr and it was totally wrong for me anyway-I'm drug free and way happier.... Good luck to You."

rak replied: "Whoa! No wonder you are having problems! Your doctor should have told you to NEVER stop cold turkey! You need to slowly wean yourself off. First go to half a pill every day for a week or two, then half a pill every other day for a week, THEN nothing at all. The weaning method is recommended by doctors AND pharmacists. Take care!"

ES replied: "I'm on paxil too. I started with 10mg and went up to 20 mg, sometimes 30mg per day....I am coming off of it so I went back down to 20mg, and now I am on 10 mg once a day. I will eventually start the 10 every other day, then every two days ....until I am weened off completely. You are not supposed to stop cold turkey because there is research that people have committed suicide and/or attempted it due to the subtle stopping of the medication. You should get weened with the help of your doctor. This is very dangerous!"
