Is it possible to get off effexor without side effects, or very little side effects.? I have been on 150mg effexor for 2 yrs. The day before yesterday I cut the dose to 75mg. I did not take any yesterday and have not had any yet today. About 9yrs ago I weaned off it as well. I understand what side effects are possible, but is it possible to only experience very slight effects? Or does everyone have a hard time getting off of it? I feel like I am prepared since I went off it once before.

Jay replied: "some people manage to get off it without side effects but a high percentage suffer lots of side effects, patients have sugested that a healthy diet and regular excercise has helped in the withdrawl of the drug and can minimise side effects."

Gomez™ replied: "My moms been on if for over like 10 years, shes trying to get off it now. She doing okay but i know shes having side effects, the longer youve been on it the harder it is"

Cameron V replied: "To wean off of effexor with minimal withdrawal effects, you need to do it as slowly as possible. Not everyone has withdrawal effects coming off of effexor, but for those that do, the withdrawal syndrome of effexor is worse than any other anti-depressant on the market. The way you are titrating down is too fast. To be really safe about it, it would be good to drop down to maybe taking a 75mg pill and a 37.5mg pill together every day for a week. Then continue to drop down by 37.5mg each week after that until your down to zero. However, if you've been off it for two days without feeling any withdrawal effects, you may be one of the lucky ones who doesn't experience the withdrawal syndrome. If you're looking for personal anecdotes, I came off 150mg of effexor cold turkey with no withdrawal syndrome. I immediately began taking zoloft after that, so it's possible that softened it. However, I was pretty pleased to be done with the side effects that effexor caused. (It has just about the worst side effect profile of any standard, modern-day anti-depressant.) So no, not everyone feels the withdrawal from it, but the above titration is the safe way to do it, if you're worried."

Any suggestions on how to cope with negative side effects while weaning off an anti-depressant medication? Effexor, I have just completed the first month of weaning off of Effexor. This entire month I was moody, agitated, fearful, confused, sweating, low grade fever, increased anxiety attacks, diarrhea, and extra tired. I am experiencing new symptoms such as the need to run away from my life, feeling caged in, heightened fear of being abandoned, and chest pain. I feel an intense need to be loved/held. However, I wont let anyone touch me except my youngest son for very long. I can not be touched without feeling a gross feeling. I have always been like that a little but its so much more prominent now. I do find that I do make exceptions to being touched for those who I trust greatly. Or that I think I can trust greatly, I am not always the best judge of character. I do not know what to continue to expect during my weaning process. I am scared that the symptoms will get worse

Keeters replied: "Normally they will gradually lower your dosage off of these types of medications rather than drop you from it immediately. If they did not, I am not sure what else to suggest other than do your best to eat as health as you can, take some vitamins and even look into some mood helping ones such as St. Johns Wort etc. Try going for a walk a few times a week even a short one. Try to enjoy the scenery and concentrate on your breathing. Take a few walks alone and with family and friends. If you have alot of stress in your life try and make a list of what is upsetting you and see if you can eliminate it. I was on anti depresents before I got pregnant because I was feeling disconnected from the world. I was just ... bleh and that isnt me. But I stoped taking them when I found out I was pregnant and some of those feelings returned. But what I realized is I added additional stresses to my life that made me want to avoid everyone. I was fortunatly able to remove some of that stress and its done wonders. Ive also gotten back into some of my old hobbies as well as working on projects around the house. When I was so overwhelmed with stress, anxiety and depression the only thing that helped me for the longest time was working on my home. For my mother and father that also battle depression/anxiety they have slowly lowered their dosages of medication and also read books about self help, relaxing, and even religion. Eventually you will find your nitch, its just a really hard road getting there =( If you depend on people easily or trust people easily, try not doing so for a while, not entirely but new people. Relax and try to remove the stress of that and be friends. Laugh and enjoy the world, and dont devulge in your ups and downs or theirs. Other peopls stress can have a toll on someone already stressed out."

nas88caror 300 09? way to go BK! replied: "it wil seem that way but once your off you will be ok drugs have a hard long effect on every body because we let our mind think that.. put your mind like this i am worthy of the person that loves me..and cares for me say this in your mind i WILL get better and fell better about myself"

What are the side effects of coming off of effexor? I have been weaning off it it for about a month now and feel grouchy as ever! I even dislike my family right now. How long does it take to get it out of your system?

Jody replied: "If you're not starting a new antidep then the grouchiness could be your old depressive symptoms since Effexor isn't there to stop them. I like to think I'm cured now and then. I weaned off Effexor before for 6 months and I finally couldn't take it anymore and went back on it. I quit smoking cigarettes instead...lol Some disorders are for a lifetime. I hope yours isn't. But I learned to be grateful that there are effective medications for my illness. With meds my life is far more productive and enjoyable. Many people have it worse off than I do."

Has anyone else had side effects while coming off of effexor? I feel like my doctor didn't wean me off the drugs slow enough and now I am having the "brain shivers", and the chills and a fever? I don't feel like this is right. Is there anything I can do about it? I mean, I can't work or even go out of my house. I'm so miserable. Any suggestions?

John Z. replied: "If you really think they're from being taken off the meds, then start taking them again and call your doctor to explain your situation. I know that I merely skipped a dose and within an hour I was dizzy and felt like a cold was coming on. The weaning-off process is slow, so maybe you're right and your Dr. took you off too quickly. I hope you feel better soon!"

unlearn34 replied: "TELL HIM!! (your doctor). You (or your insurance) are paying a lot of money for treatment. Do you get payed as much as he does??? Call the doctor or get someone to call him."

auntiegrav replied: "You need to see another doctor. NOW! Effexor (and all the SSRI medications) can have very serious side effects. Your body has become accustomed to the Effexor in order to function. It should be reduced slowly, and if you are still getting bad withdrawal symptoms, your doctor should at least try supplementing it with something else for a while. Every person is different in their response to medications. No two people are alike, and it is up to you and your doctors to monitor and control this experiment. (yes, it is an experiment with a sample size of one person, you)"

w_wells76 replied: "Hmm, you should ask your doctor right away.....I guess it also depends on how much u were taking beforehand"

Effexor XR side effects or withdrawal help!? I was given Effexor 150 mg xr for a neuropathy problem. I am not even sure the doc knew what she was doing prescribing me this! I began to feel like I had more wrong with me than when I just had the neuropathy pain. I can't keep on with this side effect problem. I have weaned myself down to 37.5 every two to three days, but still feel panicky when I take it. If I don't take it, I feel funny too. Am I close to getting off this hellacious med or am I doomed? I am really scared. Almost went to the hospital a time or two. Helpme.

Lolli R replied: "talk to your doctor, i had pretty much the same problem when i was on effexor, that med is terrible, so many people complain about it"

gapsusie replied: "If you are panicky do you have something for anxiety. You should stay on the 37.5mgs for 2 weeks before quitting"

How long will side effects last from stopping Effexor XR? Anyone ever weaned themselves off Effexor XR? I was on Effexor XR for almost 3 years. I am trying to remove myself from all medication because I would like to have a child. I have already spoken with the doctor and read all the side effects--I have gradually lowered my dose from 300 mg to 37.5 mg in a 6 month period. My last dose was about 4 days ago and I feel terrible. Im nauseaus, cant eat, a little moody, emotional. I expected all this but I am determined not to go back to the pills. How long will I have to endure this? Any insight would be so much appreciated. I had to call in Tuesday to work due to, this is gross I know, but throwing up, among other things. I cant lose my job. What should I do?

Ironball replied: "It took me 3 weeks. I was on it for 1 year"

wo_manifest replied: "Why do you think it's the Effexor XR? Is it possible that you are already pregnant?"

therapyphd replied: "I know how frustrating and upsetting it is trying to get off of medication. Effexor (Venlafaxine) has all the effects youve mentioned when stopped too abrubtly, nasuea, vomiting, diarrhea, diziness, anxiety or depression... but it sounds like you have been tapering off gradually. This is suggesting to me that after 3 years your body may need you to taper yourself off a little more slowly, however, it is very common for symptoms to return even if you get off of it slowly. In that case, you have a few options: 1 try a different medication that would not affect pregnancy, there are a few available, 2 try a different way to manage your mood swings such as working out or therapy, or talk to your doctor again. It sounds like you are miserable dealing with the withdrawl and i'm very sorry, but as you continue to decrease doses your body with continue to adjust itself (which appears in the symptoms youre feeling). However, the normal starting dose is 37.5 so it sounds like you are about to finish. For the time being, rest as much as you can and excercise. Talk to your doctor about your options and continue the dosage schedule that you and he have set because if you stop taking it suddenly now, there definitely will be worse symptoms. take care"

Noir-Industries replied: "All medications I've been weened off they've slowly cut down my does over a 2 month period. So I wouldn't get sick. The last week I would cut my pill into a half piece and take a half piece a every other day. Then cut it to a quarter every other day. If your that miserable cut up part of your pill and take some so you can function for work. You can buy pill cutters at the store. Or if it's a capsule, you can poor the capsule in a cup of apple and have a sip of that."

Side effects from Effexor? I have just been taken off Effexor (225mg) and am still experiencing extremely bad dizziness, to the point where last night I passed out twice. I was weaned off them over 10 days and took the last tablet about 8 days ago. The doc has now put me on Ativan for anxiety until I see a specalist. Does anyone know if the dizziness will go away and when.

Jade Leprechaun replied: "I took effexor yrs ago don't rember dizzines try lexapro i take that now only side effect is diahrea not too bad and nauseau if taken on empty stomach"

Abbygail replied: "I take 75mg of Efforxor everyday and the only time I experience dizziness is when I don't take it. It's not something that you can just quit cold turkey. I would guess since it take a few weeks to get into your system that it will take a few weeks to get out. However, if you are passing out then your doctor needs to do something. I would see if she could prescribe a lesser dose of Effexor and you can take every other day. Good luck - I know how miserable it is to feel dizzy."

karenpghblue replied: "You need to call your doc again, you should not still have dizziness, when I was on it I did not have dizziness at all. I am on Lexapro now and have no side effects."

Emily J replied: "Coming off Effexor 225mg in 10 days is a very fast taper. Effexor is one of the most uncomfortable antidepressants to come off of, Paxil being the worst. I would call the doctor back if you are really concerned. If you just roll with it, the dizziness probably will end in a few weeks or less."

Memster M replied: "You are probably going through a mini detox. Try downing massive amounts of water to cleanse your system of residual toxins. That is amazing that you got off of that high of a dose. I take 75mg and can't get off of them! Oh well."

I am being weaned off of my depression medication effexor has anyone else been on this medication? I am being weaned off Effexor it is used for depression I was on it for almost five years and they just lowered my dose by 65mg's. I have had crazy side effects and im up and down. I feel gross and tired not to mention irritable. I almost feel like I cant stand being in my own body. Anyone have any insight into this? Been there done it? Help?

frangipani852 replied: "I have been on effexor since July 08. I was put on 75Mg to start, then like most ppl I went down (Negativity State) and my GP decided to double my dosage to 150Mg. My symptoms seem to worsen & I realised that I not to state any Negativity (show a Positive Outlook) if not I knew he would increase my dosage. So at 6 months I asked if I could downsize my dosage as also my Psychologist thought it would be a good idea. So I was downsized to 112.5mg; which requires 2 different capsules one of which is for 37.5mg which is only prescribed for 1 month only at a time. (this is very costly 2 capsules instead of 1) Alas, on my last visit to my Psychologist I stated I was very emotional & teary (big mistake) he told me that I would not be coming off Effexor for a long time now. FYI I was also diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in July 08 which has not helped me as it takes time to get this medication right also. But, when you add this medication with Effexor, 2 Different BP Medications, Cholesterol Medication, Nexium for my delicate stomach, plus I also have to take Claratyne for Post Nasal Drip & my GP wants me to also take aspirin. So, now since being diagnosed with T2 Diabetes My Cholesterol has got higher and I now have and extra type of BP Medication. A Walking chemist Shop with Medication costing me over $200/Mth. I Hate the side effects of all these medications: Nausea, Diarrhea,Headaches,Body Aches,Shakes,Insomnia, lack of confidence, anxiety, withdrawing from social life, becoming a recluse,Exhaustion,Eating all the wrong things, Confusion, Memory Problems, Dumb stupid actions I made which make no sense, Uselessness, No Confidence, Not wanting to get dressed, Laziness, Over thinking every conversation or scenario, Hopelessness, Undecided all the time. This past 9 Months has been the worst I have ever encountered. All I want is to feel somewhere near normal again!"

Weaning off Effexor XL? I'm trying to gradually wean off Effexor XL. It's going ok but it's tough. I was on 150mg for about four years. Came down to 75mg earlier this year. In last two months I've been spreading out the days between taking the 75mg, so that now I'm taking 75mg every four days. Side effects by the third and fourth day are 'electric shock' type sensations and a slight headachy feeling, and profuse sweating if I move around a lot. My GP told me 'I've never had a patient who had problems coming off this drug'. I find that very hard to believe! My question: am I doing ok here? If feel fine about the process but it is tough and I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance that I'm on the right track?? Should I maybe open the tablets and take half the grains of a 75mg (there is no smaller available dosage) for a slower reduction of dose?

Kj replied: "Trust your intuition, you know your body better than any Dr . There are many practitioners that know the natural equivalent of many prescribed drugs, ask around, check with health food store or nutritionist see if you can start to take something that would help your process.."
