Allergy medicine suggestions for someone who has bad side effects with Zyrtec? My boyfriend is extremely allergic to cats, though he loves cats, and is moving in with me next month and I have a cat. He has been taking Zyrtec, which works okay, but it gives him really terrible nightmares and makes him so cranky. Has anyone else ever had nightmares from taking Zyrtec? Are there any other medications you suggest? Clariton does not work for him at all. I've heard of Cingular and also these allergy shots but I'm wondering if anyone has had luck with those without bad side effects. I worry about having to get rid of my cat. :(

hah replied: "I am allergic to mine too and it has gotten worse than ever over this last winter........I can not get rid of my 12 year old cat, and I don't take medication.......also had bad reactions, a friend of mine has injections and they work for her, I am just REALLY REALLY carefull to wash my hands and not touch my face after touching her.......but it takes alot of time out of your day!!!!........."

chasedbutterfly replied: "The allergy shots are very worthwhile, if you don't mind parting with a decent amount of money. I think they last for about 10 years, but your boyrfriend will have to be willing to be a pincushion for a while as the series of injections can be quite tedious. Firstly, the doctors have to do some pinpricking tests to determine exactly what he is allergic to (is it just cat fur or a component of cat fur?) and then they have to build up an immunity with a series of injections. How much do you like your cat? In the future, you can get a rex cat (they have very fine hair, and it is very short - looks like they only have skin)"

mmallie replied: "I have/had the same problem. Allergies are really new for me and I've had a cat with my boyfriend for the last 2 years. I thought I just had constant colds but in the end I was diagnosed with cat, dog, hay fever and dust allergies. I asked my allergist about desensitization (the shots) and she said I had far too many "allergy points" to go into that route. I took Claritin, but it's doesn't really do the job. In the end we found a new home for our cat. I was starting to wheeze and my allergies were only getting worse. Constant exposure will do that. Our cat has been gone for 3 months now and I still have reactions to our home (I work in another city during the week, thus right now only sleeping at home on weekends). I had to really weigh the options. The allergic reaction to our cat was really straining my immune system. Good luck and I hope this story helps."

Are there any side effects, concerning sun exposure, with the allergy medicine Zyrtec? I switched from Allegra to Zyrtec about three months ago. I have never had any type of reaction due to sun exposure before... I just wondered if sun poisoning can be a side effect of Zyrtec. And what do I do now???

Andrew replied: "Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Zyrtec. More common side effects in adults may include: drowsiness dry mouth fatigue Less common side effects in adults may include: dizziness sore throat More common side effects in children aged 6 to 11 may include: abdominal pain coughing diarrhea headache nosebleed sleepiness sore throat wheezing Less common side effects in children aged 6 to 11 may include: nausea vomiting as far as you can see.. none is related to sun exposure. good luck."

KatjaNadja replied: "Stay out of the sun as much as you can and moisturize the affected area(s) to sooth the skin... you can try an after-sun lotion (I like Alba Organics Kona Coffee after-sun lotion), but the best thing for you is to keep away from the sun for a few days -- if you can't avoid it, limit your exposure and wear plenty of sunscreen. Your sun poisoning can be caused by birth control pills or another medication, but cetirizine (Zyrtec) shouldn't cause it."

who knows? replied: "I don't know the side affects but that is the best medicine for allergies, unless there are food allergies, becuase the only treatment with food allergies is cutting down the food causing it"

Is generic Cetirizine HCL as effective as Zyrtec? Does it have different side effects? I've been taking Zyrtec year-round for years but am losing my insurance coverage. I can get 350 of the generic for about $17 but the best I can do on Zyrtec is 75 for $31!

daddyrx replied: "Cetirizine is just as effective as Zyrtec. The side effect profile is the same. Generic drugs undergo the same scrutiny as brand name drugs when they come onto the market."

Are there any long-term side effects from daily intake of allergy medications like Zyrtec or Claritin? I assume typical side effects listed on their websites are for first time users, but if I already got over the initial drowsiness and dry mouth, and have resigned to take allergy medicines a few times a week for the rest of my life, are there any known side effects I might suffer decades from now?

Wendall ツ replied: "I'm not sure about the ones that you mentioned, but both me and my mom have been taking Allegra, and it's a very good medication for allergies (me and her are allergic to like, everything, and that's what we take). And I don't think we have any problems that are long term. We've been using these medications for years. Ask your doctor about the medcations you take, that'll get you a for-sure answer."

Temperance replied: "I've never experienced any (and I've been taking them for a good ten years). The only problem is, you can build up a tolerance to the drugs over time. Basically none of the OTC brands work for me anymore."

Zyrtec withdrawl side effects? Has anyone experienced bad side effects from trying to come off Zyrtec? I've had itching and sometimes feelings of anxiety. I don't have severe allergies but am allergic to lots of things. This is just regular Zyrtec, not any of the Zyrtec-D or anything.

tldawson74 replied: "my daughter was prescirbed this med. and was allergic to it. she sweeled up and had a bad rash. they said it was from the medicince zyrtec. i would say discontinue this med until you see ur dr"

Zyrtec side effects? I am in high school, what are the side effects of zyrtec? And is there any way to lessen them? I have a bottle with a few leftover from last year, safe to take? (I don't remember any of the side effects I had from last year)

aquieterone replied: "Here's everything you should know about this drug. I take it before I go to bed because the doctor said the most common side effect is sleepiness. However, I'm wondering why you stopped this? Hopefully with the doctor's okay. Perhaps it would be wise for you to check with the doctor again before start taking it. what is zyrtec-d? and what are ALL side effects? I'm cleaning out my boyfriends bathroom and found this bottle and i thought zyrtec was a antidepressant but then i thought it was for allergy's? is it causing him to be in a bad mood lately?

Lswookie replied: "Zyrtec-D is the brand name for an allergy medication that contains cetirizine and pseudoephedrine. Cetirizine is the actual allergy med., and pseudoephedrine is a non-drowsy decongestant. The most common side effects for Zyrtec-D are dry mouth and insomnia. It's unlikely that this medication would cause your boyfriend to be in a bad mood. More likely, he was just grumpy because his bathroom was dirty. Let us know if you just fixed the problem."

zucchinisyoucantkeepagoodonedown replied: "Actually I slightly disagree with the first answer, although most of it's correct. The basis of my disagreement is my personal experience with pseudo-ephedrine (brand name Sudafed), which doctors used to prescribe to me for chronic sinusitis. It gave me very nasty mental side-effects to the point where I refused ever to take it again. Apparently my reaction was unusual, but that doesn't mean it's invalid: after all, pseudo-ephedrine is the main ingredient in the very dangerous illegal drug, ice (methamphetamine). Ice is known to cause aggressive behaviour. So maybe your bf's bad moods are being caused by the pseudo-ephedrine in the Zyrtec D. By the way, Zyrtec is marketed as an antihistamine in Australia without pseudo-ephedrine. There are plenty of other antihistamines which do not contain pseudo-ephedrine, so suggest to your bf that he try one of those."

What are some of the Side effects of zyrtec on toddlers? My 2 year old is taking Zyrtec. It has been amazing at reducing his allergy symptoms. However, he has been extremely irritable. I was wondering if this could be Zyrtec-related or just a coincidence. Any other parents out there notice the same sort of side effects?

-+-|oNe|-+- replied: "You shouldnt be really giving zyrtec to toddlers. They are too young to have a medicine that is too strong for there bodies. One possible side effect is allergic reactions, another is becoming sick."

cplowgian replied: "Biggest side effect of drugs of that class is drowsiness and are largely safe and effect for allergies. However, officially these drugs are not tested for children, so the answer is check with your doctor first. (but are used in children often)"

FreddyBoy1 replied: "The most common side effects seen in studies with ZYRTEC-D 12 HOUR® Extended Release Tablets include: insomnia dry mouth fatigue drowsiness sore throat Side effects from pseudoephedrine (active ingriedient) are not common, but they can occur. They include: nervousness, excitability, restlessness, dizziness, weakness, insomnia, convulsions, fast or irregular heartbeat, tremors, palpitations... Your child and Zyrtec... Nervousness, excitability and restlessness are listed...so I'd say yes, it could be a side effect."

mcm_soc_girl replied: "I have a 13 month old son who is also taking Zyrtec. I was not able to find any information that pertained solely to toddlers, but did find the general side effects. They are as follows: Drowsiness, sleepiness, dry mouth, fatigue, dizziness, increased appetite, and nausea may occur. These effects should subside as your body adjusts to the medication. If they continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you develop any of these serious effects while taking this medication: chest pain, rash, trouble breathing. This medication may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Hope that it helps."

cuppcr98 replied: "If your 2 year old has become moody since taken this medication it is most likely due to the drug. As a parent of a 2 year old, I would be cautious about giving my toddler any drug. Most allergies are due to a weak immune system. You might want to suppliment your toddlers diet with vitamins and research foods that are high in antioxidants to week your child off of the drug and onto a more natural path to wellness. If you would like some help with this I can be of assistance. At any rate, Zyrtec is a prescribed antihistimine and should only be taken if the doctor has cleared it for your 2 year old."

Back ache as a side effect of allergy medicine? Zyrtec and Singulair? This is my second day of being on Zyrtec and Singulair for allergic rhinitis. I also take Astelin and Nasonex. This afternoon about 2 hours after taking Singulair I started having peculiar back pain. I don't see this side effect listed on the websites of these medications. Has anyone else ever had something like this?

nimo22 replied: "It honestly wouldn't surprise me if it's the Singulair. My daughter had some side effects from taking Singulair, they are not listed on the paper that comes with the product. Go to this web-site, there are hundreds of stories on here from people who have had problems with Singulair. I know it works well for some people, but the side-effects others experience are really bad."

hiten_lakra replied: "I never heard about this side effect with your combination of medicines. I would say that you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist."

mandakate26 replied: "I take both, and have taken them for at least a year. I have never had any problems with them. I would check into something else."
