It is hard at times but i beleive the meds make it worse woth all the side effects. I wouldn't take either you will gain tons of weight which will make you more depressed and also cause health problems. I run everyday, do yoga, eat healthy and have a good counselor. Everyone is different but this is working for me."
Is anyone taking lithium and depakote at the same time? I just started on this combo last week and when I wake up in the morning I feel like crap. I get headaches, my stomach hurts and I am soooooo tired. The depakote is supposed to knock me out a night but it really doesnt kick in till much later on. IS THERE A COMBO OUT THERE THAT WORKS?!!!!! JEEEEZ
Random replied: "Drugs such as these can have serious effects on your mental and physical health which can be long lasting. The fall out of self medication could range from feeling sleepy all day to major mood swings that can have a serious impact on unexpected aspects of your personal/professional life.
DO NOT SELF MEDICATE
See a psychiatrist at the earliest."
Go_Know_Thyself replied: "No I am not... and I feel very sorry for you that you are.
Even if there is a combo out there that works... It will only work for so long... Then you'll have to change them and start all over again with something else.
It never ceases to amaze me how these people pushing this garbage never tell anyone that there are better ways. Proven ways to get better.
Med's like these destroy your quality of life. It just comes down to it being a matter of whether or not you want to take part in your own recovery... or have some chemical cocktail do all the work for you.
God knows the Doctors play very little part and operate just like the medication... With as little effort as possible on their parts decided for them by the private Ins, Medicaid and Medicare guidelines...
It's a joke... a few minutes per session, is not anywhere near enough... neither is medication.
Find someone else to help you.... Lithium is garbage!"
purplepassion replied: "Were you given those as a sleep aid?
That's not what they are generally prescribed for so you may want to explain clearly to the Doctor what your problem is and then he can give you the proper drugs.
Work with your Doctor on finding something to help you short-term while you try to get into a natural sleep pattern, So that you won't "need" to be drugged just to sleep.
If you are taking them for Bi-Polar there are different choices out there as well (Link 1 is for Bi-Polar Medication info)
The other link below will show you the different types of sleep medications available and how they work. (Link 2 )
Good Luck"

riptide_71 replied: "I take Lithium and Tegretol which is similar. Plus a couple more meds.
It takes a long time to find the right combo! Hang in there.
Most Bipolar people are on a mix of medications to combat the symptoms.
If you just started the meds, give it some time. When I first started I had diarrhea all the time. Eventually my system got used to it. It may take a couple of weeks for the side effects to stop. I even had a hand tremor from the Lithium for weeks and then it just stopped!
Also, sometimes taking the extended release verisions of the meds work. Like Eskalith ER for the Lithium. That helped my stomach alot.
Hang in there!"
does depakote make your nose bleed after drinking alcohol? does depakote cause nose bleeds while you are drinking alcohol. because i woke up this morning after drinking two cans of beer last night and i got my nose to stop in hour later and there was a blood clot in my month when it was done bleeding
mdyh replied: "Depakote and alcohol are a BAD combination. Both are metabolized by your liver. I highly recommend you call your PCP and ask for liver enzymes to get checked."
Depakote ER? I have been diagnosed with Manic depression and Borderline personality disorder. My doctor has given me Depakote ER to take, and I am just wondering what the side effects are to be expected?
I have researched it, and found that one of the side effects can be throwing up. I have a horrible phobia of this so I'm just curious as to if there is a big possibility of this occuring?
Also, is it better to take this in the morning or at night?
Thanks so much
so weight gain is fairly common then? ... wow ok thank you for that info!!
Vaalea replied: "I've taken Depakote ER for about six months. I gained about 50lbs and a lot of my hair fell out. Those side effects stopped after a while and I've lost a little of the weight and my hair grew back in thick (course I had really thick hair to begin with).
Nausea is common, but I never threw up from it. But if you feel nausea and freak out about it, you'll probably puke.
I found it most tolerable to take it at night. When i got up to 2000mg, though, I took 1500mg at night and 500mg at lunch.
It's mostly a matter of preference, but I'd say start off at night."
La-Te-Da replied: "I work in a mental health psychiatric hospital in the childrens area. I administer DEPAKOTE to several kids (ages 12-18) everyday. Although I don't know your age I can tell you that I have not experienced ever in 7 years of working where I work anyone throwing up as a result of taking this medication. What I have noticed is some people get get food cravings and do not feel full even after a full meal. Some people get tired after taking this medication but both of the symptoms I described subside with time. A down side to this medication is that it may slow your metabolism and cause weight gain. We have switched from DEPAKOTE to ABILIFY as weight te side effects are less with ABILIFY and there is no weight gain. Hope this helps. good luck!"
Kathy C replied: "My daughter went on it for one month and gained 21 pounds. She took herself off of it. The weight gain was worse than the benefits of the drug. She has BPD and Bi-Polar. She also suffers from depression and anxiety. She showed no signs of improvement on the medication and no adverse effects since going off of it."
Jacob S replied: "Depakote er or Depakine is similar to what I am using now. There are some side effects in the beginning, but usually they disappear pretty quick. The most trouble I had with shaking hands. Be prepared to have this for at least 3 till 4 weeks or even longer. Once your body is getting used to the Depakote this will disappear. Don't worry, your body must adapt to the dosis and sometimes they will raise or lower the doses. Other side effect is that you can temporary loose more hair. Mostly it comes back. You can also like more or less food. Do not eat the socalled junkfood, but take good care of yourself. HEALTHY food is a must. And let some one control your intake. It is always the best to take them immediatelyu after the meals, morning and evening or even morning afternoon and evening, depending on the dosis. My dosis is 1250 mg, in tablets of 500 mg. I take 1 in the morning, a half in de afternoon and 1 in the evening, during or right after the meals, to avoid problems with the stomach.
By the way, DON'T use it when you have had problems with your liver or stomach before and have your blood checked now and then. If you use much Depakote ( the natriumvalproate is the actual thing working, so Depakine is the same) you must take care to get pregnant, the man must be careful too. The change that your baby is handicapped is greater. First ask your doctor.
You can also visit my website: jacob.soet.tripod.com. I will publish facts about borderline there soon and you will find also information about stress. By the way, I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses, but that is not limiting my information for you. Just take what you like from my site. I hope that you will have benefit from my answer. Having borderline is very difficult, both for you and the people around you. Never give up trusting good friends!!!
Use the depakote with a glass of water, neither warm neither cold. Its after some experience easy to swallow, I have seldom problems with it. They are covered with a jelly that makes it easy to swallow them. NEVER chew it, it must be consumed as a whole!!!! SUCCESSS!!!!!!
Jacob."
Can I still take my medicine? I take Depakote ER for my headaches. I forgot to take it this morning, so I took it around 12:30 [I usually take it around 7]. Then at night, I usually take it around 8-8:30. So can I still take it tonight?
Wonder replied: "Yes you can. No worries.
-MM"
Kevin replied: "Yeah you can still take it tonight. It should not be a problem as long as it is not a very strong dose. You should not be getting medical advice online!"
Robert C replied: "Who knows. Try it out and see what happens, should help brighten up your day."
BeautyInWriting replied: "Its extended release i wouldn't. I would skip the night dose and continue on your regular schedule tomorrow."
