What dose of Topamax did you start noticing weight loss? I starting taking 100mg of Topamax for migraines. It you lost weight on Topamax, what dose were you on and how long had you been on it? And what was your start weight and how much did you lose? Also, I take it in the morning, but I've noticed a lot of people take it at night. Is it supposed to be taken at night? Laurie- I'm not taking this medicine to lose weight. It's a very common side effect and I was wondering how it worked for different people.

ondia replied: "I take it at night because it says that one of the side effects may be potential drowsiness, so I started taking it at night to be on the safe side because I drive to work in the morning. It doesn't really matter if it is taken in the a.m. or p.m. I started noticing weightloss when I was on the 25mg dosage after about a month. I lost 10lbs. I am on the 50 mg dosage now. My weight hasn't changed. I take it for migranes."

yctwins replied: "I am on it for weight loss. I started at 25mg, then 50, now 100mg. I take it at night, but am going up to 200, and will take 100 at night and 100 in the morning. I have only noticed a little tingling in my fingers. I have consistently lost a couple of pounds a week, for a total of 10 pounds so far. Sodas taste gross and I have no cravings. I am pleased. I wonder if it works better in the morning as well."

Amanda replied: "Been on it a week and 3 days so far...lost a total of 4 pounds so far. I take 25 mg in the morning and 25 mg at night...50 mg all together. I'm going to switch both at night now because it's starting to make me really weak and tired through out the day. But yes I noticed weight loss within a week."

What is a therapeutic dose of Topamax? How many milligrams of Topamax is a therapeutic level?

Loz replied: "The dose of topamax used depends on the reason for its use, and the individual patient's response to treatment. For example, I take it for chronic neuropathic pain (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome) and I take 50mg twice a day. Somebody else taking it for migraines or epilepsy (its approved uses) may require a lower or higher dose, although as far as I know the 'standard' therapeutic dose is around the 100mg/day mark. As to what the actual therapeutic level in the body is, if that's what you're referring to, I'm afraid that I can't help you with that."

Is is safe to take 3 Ibuprofen, one muscle relaxer and my daily 25mg dose of topamax? thanks :) yes its Cyclobenzaprine or Flexeril... what would happen? and what should i do about now not being able to take my topamax because i already took the muscle relaxer and ibuprofen? no the doctor only prescribed topamax as for right now

J replied: "Actually, no, this is a combination of drugs you should not take without a doctor's advisement. One cannot tell what class of muscle relaxer you are on, but I know that cyclobenzaprine and topiramate may interact. Did the same doctor prescribe them at the same time? Then, maybe, but you might receive side effects. I'm sorry, I cannot answer any more of your questions. I suggest you discuss this with a nurse on call or a 24-hour pharmacy."

Shannon C replied: "if the ibuprofen is 200 mg then ok. if 800 take only one. flexeril is ok to take with either or both topamax or ibuprofen. it makes you tired, so be cautious. when in doubt call a pharmacist."

What is the dose (mgs) of Topamax where weight loss starts? I'm on 25 mg of Topamax for migraines (taken every night). I'm probably going to increase the Mg's to keep the migraines at bay, but I'd also like to see a weight loss too. Just curious!

Roxy123 replied: "I took topamax and at 25mg it didn't do anything for my weight, but when I got up to 75mg I started to see some weight loss. But don't just jump up to a higher dose due to the side effects, they can get bad."

Ideal dose of Topamax for Bipolar Disorder? What is the ideal dose of Topamax for Bipolar Disorder? And how does Topamax and Tegretol compare in effectiveness, working for Bipolar, and side effects-wise? Topamax is a mood stabilizer used for anything from epilepsy to depression. If given for Migraine it is to stabilize moods that cause migraine

olepmis replied: "topamax is for migraine treatment and tegretol is for bipolar disorder treatment."

ivette replied: "Dose is pretty specific for every human. You have to start taking low dose and gradually increase them till your condition is good enough. Effectiveness of topamax vs tegretol is individual thing too. For someone topamax is better, for another tegretol is better."

D D replied: "It is completely up to your doctor. I personally take one 100mg tablet once daily (in the morning) I used to take twice daily but it made me to jittery at night and I could not sleep."

Lila replied: "Unfortunately nobody can tell you what dosage will work for you. Some dosages will work fine for others but may not for you. Sometimes you need to have your dosage lowered or if you don't notice a change or that it is helping you it is time to talk to your psychiatrist. I am glad that you have gotten the help that you need and hopefully will no longer suffer with the manic phase of Bi-Polar Disease. I say disease because Bi-Polar is a disease just like diabetes or heart disease and requires medication. It is physical in the sense that the brain chemical Serotonin is disrupted in those of us with the disease. Your antidepressant will help with the depression and both together should allow you to lead a happy and normal life. Please do not let anybody tell you that there are natural cures as there is no such thing. You have to have the medication to work with the brain chemicals."

darlin replied: "If anything it causes bad behavior so I don't know why they would prescribe this for bi polar people. My son takes Topomax and his tamper is crazy and he is emotional now and so we are in the process of weaning him off of it. It also does not allow your body to sweat which is a scary thing we have run into. My son is 12 and turns very red from just walking!!!! He has to have ultra sounds to make sure he doesn't have kidney stones and all around if you don't like what you see, I can't imagine a reason you would want someone on this drug. It causes anger, mood changes, frustration and so if it works you were the lucky one!"

Cella replied: "I was on Topamax for a very short time and it did nothing for me but make me lose weight. I have a friend on Tegretol for many years and seems to be doing fine. I believe she takes 400mg a day. I'm on Lamictal since last October and am on 250mg a day. It was the only med that got me out of depression. Side effects are a rash on the neck which can be dangerous. Dry mouth, blurry vision and confusion. It's one of the newer ones and I have been told by many others that it works great for them. You start out with a starter pack for 5 weeks to get to 100mg and then they move you up faster. The normal dose is 250mg told to me by my pdoc. Ask your pdoc about it, it was a life saver for me. Take care and never give up! Cella"

Tahoe replied: "Tegretol can also be prescribed for nerve pain, RLS, etc. Topomax is for migraines and seizures. Everyone reacts differently to different meds. There is no way we can tell you over the internet what dose would be effective for you. Depends on your height, weight, etc. And, it also depends on the severity of your bipolar disorder, too. It is all trial and error."

Anyone on Topamax and if yes dose it seen to make you brain slow down? Do you feel like doing notthing allday?

lilmouseketeer replied: "I am not on it, but I have a very close friend of mine who is on it, she has also complained about feeling tired, moody and worthless all day....She says she feels like a zombie walking through life...she has only been on it for a month...I told her to give it some time because most medicines like that have side affects that will cease after a while"

Sarah M replied: "I took it for a while for bipolar. It made me an idiot! Many people refer to it as "Dopomax". Mayve you should ask your doc about alternative meds. Some bipolar people take it to help them lose weight they gain from their other drugs. It is all a big circle and waste of time I am so glad I finally gave in and started lithium. On Topomax I was very dopey and I kept saying the wrong words - like "I am going to wrap the Christmas Presidents" instead of "I am going to wrap the Christmas presents". It made wok or study imposible. If you take it for bipolar swap to lithium and inositol (see links below). If you take it for something else then I can't uggest alternative drugs but talk to your doc. The cognitive dulling is a very common side efect with Topomax and that is why most people stop taking it."

How long or what dose to you have to be at for Topamax to begin working on migraines? I know they start with a low dose and slowly increase it. At what point does it become helpful?

daddyrx replied: "Topamax (topiramate) works, for some patients, at a dose as low as 25mg/day. The usual dosage for migraine prophylaxis is between 50 - 100mg per day. The maximum dose is 200mg twice a day if it's used to treat seizures. A good side effect of Topamax is weight loss, but an even nastier side effect is memory problems especially at the higher dosages."

Birth control and Topamax? How much does Topamax effect birth control pills? I am currently taking Topamax to manage seizures. I am also on birth control (the pill). I am wondering how much of an effect the Topamax will have on my birth control. I am currently taking a full-dose birth contol pill (50 mcg). My gyno says that this should be enough to counteract the effects of the Topamax, but that there isn't that much research, just that it's known to lower the effectiveness of birth control pills. Is there anyone that can help me find more information? I'd like to find out if I should be using a back-up method, or if just taking the pill is enough protection. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

ilse72 replied: "Topamax affects "combined" birth control pills and patches. Those are the birth control pills that contain both estrogen and progesterone. If you have the combined type, your pack is either a 21 or a 28 day pack (this has 21 pills that you must take and then 7 placebos you can take or skip.) . If you are on progesterone only birth control, this is a 28 day pack where all pills must be taken and they are all the same. This type is not affected by topamax. If you are on the combined-type of birthcontrol and are worried, then by all means use more protection. However, if you are on the progesterone only, you have nothing to worry about."

What time do you usually take your Topamax? I was started on 25mg of Topamax at night but that wasn't enough for my migraines. I called today and she increased the dose to 50mg. I expected to be taking 25 in the morning and 25 at night but she's got me taking the full dose at night. Part of the problem I was having was a dull headache at night about an hour or so before my next dose was due. Does anyone else take their full dose at night and does this work for you?

girlcop1 replied: "I take 100 mg and I take the entire dose in the morning. It does the dull the appetite and if your headaches occur in the afternoon it would be best tto take it at lunch time. I have found that this works best for me."
