Why do BMW reccomend a higher tyre pressure for the rear tyres? For my rear wheel drive 2005 (55 reg) BMW 5 Series new shape - Bmw recommend 33 psi front and 41 psi rear. Why is this?

Alex S. replied: "Most likely for better traction. For the way normal people drive there cars, it will probably not make a difference if you just fill up all tires with the exact same pressure."

icewitch54 replied: "No idea, but I think most do. For my little KA it is 27 psi front and 29 back. Similar was true of the car I had before....not exact psi but that the rear tyres where a higher psi than the front. Maybe it is something to do with the braking mechanism? Just a guess."

k p replied: "1. You may have staggered wheel setup. The rear wider than the fronts. 2. BMW wants your car to be have more understeering. A regular driver can react to understeering(that front end dive when turning), but not so good to oversteering(the rear end swaying out on a turn), so for safety, BMW makes it more toward understeering. I adjusted mine to 34 psi on all four non-stagger wheel to have a neutral steering."

Phillip S replied: "The 5 Series has a slightly heavier rear axel weight with monster trunk lid, fuel load, rear passenger load, and possible trunk luggage. The wider tires (staggered) on the rear will spread the load significantly. I think BMW was trying for a 50/50 balance but could not always control the car's loading when the cornering was in an aggressive handling attitude. I hope you got the RUN FLAT tires off your car, too."

Rob replied: "BMWs are rear-wheel drive and having more tire pressure in back gives you better performance and handling. Bimmers are a different breed of car. There is nothing like the way they ride and handle."

Garry replied: "1.The rear wider than the fronts. 2. BMW wants your car to be have more under steering. A regular driver can react to under steering(that front end dive when turning), but not so good to over steering(the rear end swaying out on a turn), so it's for safety."

Tyre pressure for my BMW 318i? Hi i dont hav the book that should have come with the car, and it doesnt say on the tyre itself? so i wonderd if anyone could tell me what it should be? its had new 18inch aloys put on it, (b4 i bought it) does that make a difference to the pressure? thanx

Iam_canadian replied: "32 psi"

Country Girl replied: "More than likely 30-35psi If you open the driver's side door, and look on the end of the door there should be a panel telling you how much to inflate each tire on your car."

Surf 101 replied: "I dont quite know? But what I do know is thats a really cool backround if I do say so myself! ;) lol"

amberlynne_2007 replied: "Tyre is actually spelled TIRE. Purchase a tire gage and go to the gas station, and check it yourself."

mwhyte replied: "you need the profile of the tyre to get the correct pressure - it shuold say on the wall of the tyre."

links305 replied: "it should tell you on the tire itself what the pressure should be go look on the side of the tire"

hayesbh69 replied: "Look on the tire put the recomened pressure it says."

pater47 replied: "The car doesn't determine the pressure - the tire does. Check again - it's on there somewhere."

timc_fla replied: "The manual is irrelevant. It depends on the tire. It will state on the sidewall of the tire what the max PSI is. Typical street tires are usually 35psi, high permance tires can be up to 70psi, it totally depends on the tire. tc"

grk_tigris replied: "Though the tire should have it written somewhere what its max pressure is, if you open the driver side door in the frame of the door there should be a label that states what the recommended tire pressure is from the company.you might have to kneel down to read it because it is usually low on the car. Its always better to have tires that have a higher max PSI limit than the suggested by manufacturer that way you have a bigger leeway for inflation issues."

Pam W replied: "You need to look at what model of car it is and the age. If you follow the following link there is a table which you can trace you car on and then get an accurate figure, hope that this helps. "

Wes replied: "Cara, Tires are the single most variable thing that you can put on your car. Different tires make your car handle better in different types of environments. For this reason each tire needs to be filled to its own specific pressure. Below are links that will show where the pressure is indicated. The pressure is usually indicated in what seems like small print jumbled up with other (seemingly useless) tire information. P.S. The values listed in the link provided by Pam should be correct if you are running the same tires as the ones your car had on it when it came from the factory."

Mick replied: "Check on the tyre wall it will tell you what the pressure should be At most petrol station at the side of the air pump their is a chart what tells you how much air you need to put in your tyres"

Bolek Tabor replied: "Hi, Unlike many other people told you numbers on a tire says average values and you may just ignore it. I looked in the manual for 3 series from 1995. For BMW 318i and 318is with 205/60 R15 91 H, 225/55 R 15 92 V, 225/50 ZR 16, 205/60 R 15 91 Q M+S, 225/55 R 15 92 Q M+S max 4 people in a car (2 people in convertible) front 29(2.0) rear 32(2.2) when 5 persons plus luggage (4 persons plus luggage in convertible) front 32(2.2) rear 39(2.7) With tire 185/65 R 15 88 T, 185/65 R 15 88 Q M+S front 29(2.0) rear 35(2.4) fully loaded front 36(2.5) rear 44(3.0)"

Karhu100 replied: "Hi Caz, well ignore all the tyre spelt tire americans and listen here! I have the same car, if you open the drivers door and look in the door pillar ( other makes of car may have it on the door) there is a silver plate giving you the different tyre sizes and a handy little picture of what kind of weight you are carrying, like 2 people/ 4 people with suitcases etc. It will then tell you the pressures required for the tyre size look on the tyre itself for the size, you'll be able to tell just look for the same number letter configuration as on the sticker. usually about 28 for the front and 30-32 in the rear. Make sure both front are the same and both rear are the same otherwise the car will drift to one side. Take care and drive safe....X"

what tyre pressure is correct for my bmw 323i low profiles? the power steering is sluggish and this is to do with tyre pressure

kakl1104 replied: "look it up in the manual or go by a local tire shop and have them tell you. NTB OR DISCOUNT TIRE will be the best places to go."

samsamdavedave replied: "get the book out that you should have got with your car....this should tell you what tyre pressure you should have.....some cars have it written on stickers on the inside of the front door.... if you havent got that or cant be bothered to search, try this tyre pressure site, just find your car in the list of BMWs. hope this helps."

Erin replied: "It should be written in the manual you got with the car!"

hardscout69 replied: "the other answers will work.. but there is something much simplier than that.... just look on the side of your lowpro tires and it will give the proper inflation... if that is correct and you are still having sluggish performance, then it could be something as simple as the weather affecting your tires... with cold weather, tires tend to deflate a whole lot faster... you will want to put the exact amount required in the tire... with warm weather, you want to take a couple of pounds out that way you dont loose grip... and judging from the kind of vehicle and the tires you are using... i would say you like to go fast... this should remedy your performance problems, if not get your tie-rods and alignment checked.. hope this helps"

cdood2002 replied: "32 psi in the tyres is perfect for any car. and check the power steering fluid level its not all about the tyres"

maria bartoninfrance replied: "Most garages with air pumps have a big sign with all the tyre presures of the most popular cars. However, sluggish power steering should have nothing to do with tyre pressures unless they are completely flat. I suggest you have the steering checked professionally. Good luck and happy driving!"

Tyre pressure for my BMW 318ci (2001)? hi, i change my wheels from normal to M3, now i need to know the correct tyre pressure for the wheels. front (michelan pilot sport 225/45 ZR18) back (255/40 ZR18), due to the tyre width is diffrent, i know front and back are needs diffrent air pressure, but i need to know how much psi? (using for home to work - normal london roads),, any body please help me,, thanks

Nigel M replied: "I'd run 40 psi (275 KPa) front and rear."

Sui Generis replied: "On the TiRE you will see a PSI rating for what it needs. Look around the tire walls and you will see a number. But from looking at the size of the tire you put, it seems like your PSI is around 45-55."

M333 replied: "Do not use the pressure shown on the tire. That is the max pressure the tire can handle, not the recommended pressure. The recommended pressure is different for each vehicle and is shown on the label on the door jamb. Need to know the original size to be able to answer, but generally add about 2 psi for every plus one you went up in size. If the original size was 215/55-17, then you went up plus 1 on the front. That would be 2 psi over what is on the door jamb label. Plus one is an increase of 10mm width, decrease of 10% aspect ratio and increase of 1" wheel diameter. This usually leaves the rolling circumference the same as it was. However, the rear tires will kind of be a guess because of how wide they are compared to what you had. The M3 has wider rear wheels which are not recommended for standard E46 cars due to the offset which will cause rubbing. It is recommended to use 4 front M3 wheels for a non "M" E46. My 2002 M3 door sticker says 33 front 35 rear on the wheels and tires you are talking about. Same E46, obviously other things are different, but should not affect tire pressures in this case...eea2797"

Tyre Pressures for BMW 320d M Sport 255/35/18? I cannot find an accurate recommended tyre pressure for these as it appears they are off a 328 (hence the difference in weight possibly affecting the recommended pressure shown on various websites). Does anyone know what they should be (rear tyres) as they were upgraded to the 18's by BMW before I got it. The rear end slides about all over and I'm convinced they must be over-inflated. The handling on these is supposed to be good and mine isn't that great. Many Thanks

Huba replied: "If BMW made the switch, contact your dealer for the correct info. By going to the larger diameter and low ratio, you lost a lot of sidewall. That could explain the loss of handling."

Mark K-NI replied: "the exact pressures should be on a label in the drivers door seal. But you will know by tyre wear, if it wears fast in the middle its too hard, if it wears fast at the outside, its too soft. low profile tyres may feel like you lost handling, but infact its more predictable and stiffened up the ride and possibly just feels that way. You might want to have alignment checked, but note you need to get someone with 4 wheel alignment equipment as its RWD. No point doin it half right. also you cant rotate tyres left to right, it reverses the tread and the tyre will pull water in and lose traction rather than push it out. check the tread rotation direction to avoid looking stupid lol"

jEAN lUC LIVES replied: "Usually 2.2 bar or 32 psi"

What is the correct tyre pressures for Bridgestone Potenza 225/50R17 in psi on a BMW 5 series? Hi, I have a used BMW 5 series which has Bridgestone Potenza 225/50R17 tyres (run flats) all round. Can someone tell me the correct tyre pressures in PSI for front and rear tyres...Thank You. 3 answers and 3 different answers. Come on guys give me an answer that's consistant....

J G replied: "Normal: 33psi front / 41psi rear Fully laden: 41psi front / 45psi rear This information should be on the driver's door pillar."

brod replied: "Following the recommendations posted in the driver's door pillar is the right procedure. But the low tire pressure in front is disconcerting to some drivers. If you can stand a tiny little bit of roughness in riding comfort, then you can increase the front tire pressures to 36 or 38 psi. You would hardly notice the roughness but could possibly gain a little more mileage due to less rolling friction. If you are a stickler for rules then just stay with manufacturer's recommendations."

viggom35 replied: "Come on, are you serious?! It's stamped on the tire :-|"

obsidian replied: "The answer to your question is stamped on your door pillar , regardless what make of tyre you have fitted , the correct pressures for the vehicle are on the door pillar."

Mario replied: "you can see correct tire pressure for your car when you open the drivers door there is a sticker on the door panel, it tells you normal and max loaded with fronts and rears"

does the 2004 bmw 1 series 118d SE have cruise control as standard & tyre pressure? what is the correct tyre pressure without rear passenger and luggage

J G replied: "Cruise control was a £170 option, so most will have this. Tyre pressures: 3 or 5 dr with 205/55 R16 tyres; 2.0 bar (29psi) front / 2.1 bar (30psi) rear normal 2.4 bar (35psi) front / 2.6 bar (37psi) rear laden Tyre pressures should be on a sticker on the driver's door pillar."

Alucard replied: "And please remember that the pressure readings on the sticker are in bar not psi. If i get one more fuc>ing bmw owner running 22 pounds in his tyres and asking why his tyres are wearing unevenly i will shoot him in the face."

Tyre Pressures 19" for BMW coupe 318i? I have 245/35 ZR19 93W XL Tyre's on my 318i Coupe Bmw not sure what the tyre pressures should be.

OMFG-CTFO replied: "look on the tires."

1000RR replied: "There should be a tire pressure label on your gas cap, your owners guide, or by the door panel. If these are aftermarket tires, then just go with 32psi front, 34psi on rears."

galaxiexl replied: "NO,DO NOT GO BY WHAT IS ON SIDEWALL OF TIRES! That figure is the MAX inflation pressure for that tire,NOT the factory recommended pressure. On your drivers door panel is a decal with VIN information,Tire size(s)and recommended inflation for front and rear axles. The 318i may have staggered fitment and different pressures for front and rear.Correct pressure is critical to tire performance, longevity, and handling."

giljackson CPP replied: "If they are not the stock size that comes with that car, and I don't think a 318 has ever came with 19" tires, then I would check with the tire maker of the tires that you have. The recommended tire pressue in the manual and on the door sill, is for the tire size that came with the vehicle."
