You have to take it twice a day, instead of once, but if you can remember to do that, you'll save a LOT of money. The normal dose for supression on acyclovir is 400 mgs twice a day, so also think about getting the 800 mg pills and breaking them in half. You'll save more in the long run."

Alli replied: "There are a few different medications to treat herpes. Valtrex is the most expensive. Have your doctor prescribe you acyclovir. It has been around for a LONG time so it's pretty cheap now. I use acyclovir when I get an outbreak or "feel" an outbreak coming on. There is also Famvir (generic name: famciclovir). I have personally used acyclovir and famciclovir for outbreaks and they both work fine."
