Questions and Answers
What should I do about my 92 Volvo 240? I recently purchased a Volvo 240. The interior is in great shape and the exterior is ok some peeling paint mostly clear. The vehicle has about 193k miles on it. There is some exhaust work that needs to be done to quiet the road lion. Those who I know have Volvo's swear by them-when they are maintained. The car has a vibration when accelerating lightly then goes away when a hard acceleration is implemented. My mechanic whom I've taken all my cars to says the rear differential is about to go out and needs replacement. Has anyone ever had some work similar to this done? If so do they have any idea of how much it could costs I have never owned one of these Swedish machines so I have no idea what to expect. Also does anyone have any insight on "back" maintenance that I need to catch up on. Can I expect this thing to keep running for much longer? Like I said I have no idea on these Swedish machines-I've only had nissans and hondas before this. Any help & suggestions would be simply amazing! Thank you!

Somethingtotry replied: "Find and independent Volvo service shop in your area. Use the link below and ask the people on the forum for advice. It is a great resource and you will find many people who know the car inside out."

t-shirt guy replied: "Those cars if maintained are great. Take it to a mechanic that knows Volvo's I have a 91 740 with the same mileage, keep it maintained change all fluids periodically and most definitely find a mechanic that is familiar with those cars."

candiesman05 replied: "Keep the car this was the next to the last year for the 240 line the B230f engine will go 400k + and I have seen alot of these go past that what you put in the car it is well worth it my not be the best looker but you can pass alot of bus stops with her You need to find a Independent shop in your area contact me and I will try to help ya find one being I deal with Volvo shops only all over the USA cheaper to keep her like the song says"

Lucky Man singh replied: "I would trade it, clearly, the previous owner did not maintian it very well and it will be expensive. I suggest you can trade it for a economic Chevelrot aveo or a optra. Even a Hyundai Elentra is would last you a long time if you change the fluids properly."

mike two replied: "Volvos keep running way beyond 300K without having to rebuild the engine. Try to replace the spark plugs and/or sparkplug wires, sounds to me that you have an ignition problem rather than transmission or "REAR END" problem. I have a 1995 Volvo 240 and am still very happy with it. The car is not entirely or necessarily built in Sweden, although that is where it is originally from. But many parts are built in Germany. (i.e.: Bosch alternators and starters etc) Hang on to the car, you have a gem."

palebeachbum replied: "If it seems to run well, I would say get that differential fixed. I recommend doing a tune-up, fuel filter, air filter, and change the timing belt. The 240 is one of the ugliest and best cars on the road. I had an '85 that I bought when I left for college with 134k. Looked and ran like new. A year later it was rusting, needed tie rods and the tranny was slipping. I got those things fixed and drove it for another year, then sold it with 164k to a high school kid. He drove it for another 2yrs until he went off to college. He gave it to his younger sister and she drove it until she went off to college. It was so abused and just kept going and going. Excellent cars. I miss mine, but the fuel economy would kill me now."

How much should the Volvo cost? 1981 Volvo 240 Stick shift. Power windows and door locks. Cloth interior. Moon roof. Everything works but the moon roof doesn't open right now, needs grease. It drives well and makes no funny noises. 270,000 miles on the clock. The used car lot wanted $2,900 but I talked them down to $1,800. My friends say it's still too high a price. What do you guys think?

Something Witty replied: "go to kelly blue book...and of course you should know any car with that many miles on it is trash..anything after 175000..is too much...but since its so old....i dunno.. you should think at the most they should have 14000 a year...anything more its run into the ground.."

thom t replied: "Sounds too high to me(In Australia I would think about $1000.) Where are you? But you always pay more from a dealer than from an auction. Are you getting a warranty? You can't just go by miles...have a compression check to see if the engine is worn. Something Witty: 14,000 x 25 years is 350,000 so 270,000 is not necessarily too much."

faithlesselectron replied: "dude my girlfriend bought a volvo 1992 for $1400! with 130000 miles on it. that is an aweful deal, forget it."

Ian F replied: "WTF, that's WAY too much for that car. That's US dollars? Don't take their word for it that it "needs grease." If it was that easy, they probably would have fixed it themselves...it would more than pay for itself. The only way it's worth that is if it's one of the high-end coupes (but IIRC, those were 260s). EVERYTHING on that car had better look 10 years newer than it is for that price."

UCANTCME replied: "TOO HIGH.......... NO MORE THAN $1300.00 PLUS IT WILL BE VERY EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR AS WELL."

I need to replace the lock set on the driver's door of a 1991 Volvo 240.? I have the interior door panel off but I can not figure out how to remove the lock.

Does anyone know how much insurance would be for a 18 year old male and the car is a 1985 volvo? 1985 volvo 240 dl auto 4cyl. gray exterior and dark blue interior, 4dr

davidepeden replied: "1) Look in the yellow pages under auto insurance. 2) Pick up the phone and call an agent."

sdwillie replied: "Only an insurance company. It changes a lot depending on where you live. So you know, small offices that aren't affiliated with any particular company will get you the best rates. Also so that you know, you might get your best rates with (for example) State Farm, but your State Farm writer won't give them to you. Only the unaffiliated writer will (my Allstate policy is about 240/year less than what an Allstate rep offered for the identical policy)."

FLGirl185 replied: "Depends on where you live."

Ehsan replied: "It depends a lot on where you live in us, It's so much cheaper in smaller towns. But I think because of your age it should be around 100$ per month(for min coverage). But if you are in a small town, it can get as low as 45$ per month for min coverage. And it doesn't depend on your car make and model when it's a used car!"

steve replied: "Its very hard to determined the rate based on few info you were given. Rate also varies based on gender, geographical location. Go to online sites and check out the quotes. You are not obligate to pick anything."

Jack L replied: "The only way to get a definite answer is to shop around and get quotes. Just be sure what coverage your getting. Sometimes (Most of the time) cheapest isn't the best choice. But more than likely for an 18 year old, it's not going to be cheap no matter what kind of car it is. I am 18 and my insurance is not cheap."

John H replied: "You really are just going to have to shop around for the best auto insurance rates. I would compare auto insurance at and see what the going rate is for you. It will only take about 5 minutes."

Lauren replied: "there are lots of variables call or email insurance companies and ask for a free quote, they'll give you one"
